Destination USA: Types of Student Visas for International Students

Hyderabad: International students who want to study in the United States need to apply for a student visa. The U.S. government offers three types of visas for study: F, J, and M.

The F-1 visa is the most common, and is for full-time academic studies at an accredited college, university, or other educational institution in the United States.

The J-1 visa is for students who want to participate in exchange programs, such as study abroad programs, research programs, and cultural exchange programs.

The M-1 visa is for those who want to pursue vocational or non-academic studies in the United States.

To apply for any of these visas, students must first be accepted to an accredited institution certified by the Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVP). It is important to note that even if an institution is SEVP-certified, it may not hold national or regional accreditation. The U.S. Department of Education (https://ope.ed.gov/dapip/#/home) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (https://www.chea.org/search) databases list accreditation status for all U.S. institutions.

For J-1 visa applicants, accredited institutions designated by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs place participants in academic exchange programs. Recognition of course credits and degrees by other institutions and U.S. and international employers is linked to an institution’s accreditation.

Once accepted into a SEVP-certified school, students will be registered for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) (https://www.ice.gov/sevis/overview) and must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee. The SEVP-approved school will then issue Form I-20, which the student will need to apply for a student visa at a U.S. Consulate.

Students should present their Form I-20 to the consular officer during the interview. International students can bring their families (spouses or children) with them to the United States while they study. Families must also enroll in SEVIS, obtain Form I-20s from SEVP-approved schools, and apply for a visa. However, families do not need to pay the SEVIS fee.

International students can visit the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Student and Exchange Visitor Program (https://www.ice.gov/sevis/overview) to learn more about SEVIS and the SEVIS I-901 Fee.

It is important to note that two separate U.S. government agencies are involved with international student arrival and status while studying in the United States.

The State Department is responsible for the visa application and issuing the visa. Once a visa holder arrives in the United States, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security takes over as the responsible agency for entry into the country and issuing and enforcing international student regulations.

Hyderabad: The soulful melodies of ragas hold a unique ability to soothe mental health struggles, believes the New-York based Rishab Rikhiram Sharma.

Hailing from the family of ‘luthiers’ in Delhi and acclaimed as the youngest disciple of virtuso Pandit Ravi Shankar, the artist endeveaors to promote mental health through his sitar performances.

After touring across the United States and Canada, the 26-year-old is in Hyderabad as part of his India tour showcasing the ‘Sitar For Mental Health’ music series. Ahead of his show on April 14 at District 150 in Madhapur, Rishab shares his reflections on his sitar journey, personal mental health challenges, and the significance of raising awareness about mental well-being.

Drawing personal experiences, Rishabh shares that he encountered mental health struggles following his grandfather’s passing during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was through this process that he realized the profound impact the sitar had on his mental well-being.

“I’m not a thearpist. I’m just doing what I love. Playing the sitar for my bedridden grandfather brought him joy, and even now, seeing senior citizens at my shows often reminds me of him,” he says.

Rishab incorporates mindfulness into his sitar performances in the 90-minute show, fostering a serene atmosphere and inviting the audience to engage with the music. Through his melodies, he conveys themes of resilience and healing, while also introducing mental health discussions during breaks, aiming to counter the stigma around it.

“The reception for the shows differs between India and abroad. In India, there’s a deep appreciation for this music but people are not much open about discussing mental health. Conversely, while audiences abroad may not grasp the music as thoroughly, they are more willing to engage in discussions about mental health. This is what I strive to promote in our country through Indian classical music,” he explains.

Held in multiple cities including Chennai, Mumbai and Goa, the show customizes its theme to reflect the diverse musical tastes of each locality. The surprise theme for Hyderabad adds to the anticipation, making it a must-see live experience for all.

Commenced on February 18 and wrapping up on April 14 in Hyderabad, the tour will soon embark on a global journey after its conclusion. For those interested, slot availability and ticket information can be checked on Zomato Live.

BJP accuses Congress of secret pact for Owaisi Win

Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP K. Laxman on Friday alleged that Telangana’s ruling Congress has entered into a secret deal with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) to ensure its victory in Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency.

The Rajya Sabha member claimed that the Congress is trying for the victory of AIMIM President and sitting MP Asaduddin Owaisi in the next month’s elections.

He told media persons that as the elections are coming closer, “fear and insecurity is gripping the Congress”, alleging that it has failed to implement the promises made in the Assembly elections and has not yet waived farm loans, which has made the farmers angry.

He said the Congress’s attempts to link all guarantees with the Lok Sabha elections were creating doubts and that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy was claiming a conspiracy against him to divert people’s attention and get public sympathy.

Claiming that the BJP is ahead of other parties in campaigning, he exuded confidence that it will win most Lok Sabha seats in Telangana and also come to power in the state whenever elections are held.

Laxman remarked that despite the defeat in the Assembly elections, BRS leaders are still showing arrogance. Replying to a query, he said the BJP has no plans to change the candidates in Telangana.

He said the party would soon announce its candidate for the by-election to the Secunderabad Cantonment Assembly constituency.

Water to be drawn from critical threshold level of NSP

Hyderabad: The Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) on Friday decided to allow water drawls in Nagarjuna Sagar Project up to a depth of 500 ft, 10 ft below the MDDL of 510 feet, making some 14 tmc of water available additionally to meet the drinking water needs of both Telangana and AP States. Telangana State will be entitled for 8.5 tmc of it, as against 5.5 tmc allotted to AP.

The three-member committee of the River Management Board, which met here, discussed the drinking water needs of both states and the utilisation of 80 tmc of water allotted to them in October. Telangana has had already exhausted its allotted share of 35 tmc in the current water year. AP was barely left with any so far as its share of 45 tmc is concerned.

Both states sought to take drawls from below thresh hold level with immediate effect. Otherwise, they need to wait till the end of July to get fresh inflows into the project once the monsoon sets in. MDDL of 510 feet represents the lowest permissible limit for water drawls in a normal situation. The inflows received in Nagarajuna Sagar project were the lowest ever this year in the absence of adequate rainfall in the catchment.

Telangana State declared a crop holiday for 6.30 lakh acres in the command of the Nagarjuna Sagar project for both Kharif and Rabi under. State required at least 1.7 tmc of water every month to support the drinking water supply in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The water needs of districts such as Nalgonda, Suryapet and Khammam are also to be taken care of for the next three months.

The water level in NSP touched the MDDL on Thursday. AP has staked claim for a major share of the water being taken from below the MDDL on the plea that Telangana had already availed seven tmc of water over and above its allotted share for the current year. Telangana Engineer -in- Chief Sunil Kumar stressed that the drawls made by AP were not fully accounted for. Officials said that emergency pumping systems would be put in place to extract water below the MDDL. These systems operate when the water level falls below the critical threshold.

The state government is exploring options to secure emergency releases if needed from other sources, such as Almatti Dam by approaching the Karnataka government also.

Telangana govt defeats purpose of Mission Bhagiratha, supplies bore well water to households

Telangana govt defeats purpose of Mission Bhagiratha, supplies bore well water to households

Hyderabad: Despite the provision of supplying surface water under Mission Bhagiratha, the State government had begun to supply bore well water in villages defeating the very purpose of ensuring supply of treated and safe water to households.

Under Mission Bhagiratha, water is sourced from major rivers or reservoirs fed by the rivers. The raw water is treated at nearby water treatment plants and the same is pumped to the major Over Head Storage Reservoirs (OHSR) and sumps at the highest points. The water is then supplied through secondary pipeline network to all the habitations by gravity.

However, since last few weeks, bore water was being drawn and pumped into the OHSRs. Given the depleting ground water table in the State, water has to be drawn from deep and such water would have high fluoride, chlorine and other impurities, said an official from Mission Bhagiratha department.

This was being done in sharp contrast to the last summer’s practice. The State government then had issued circulars strictly prohibiting use of bore water for supply to villages, the official said.

Since water was now being arranged from borewells, the operation and maintenance agencies, which otherwise had to be cautious over the supply mechanism, were now bit relaxed. More so, the practice was leading to wastage of water in the villages as many tend to use them for livestock needs, besides draining down into gutters.

However, the department higher officials claim that bore well water was being arranged only as a contingency plan to meet any emergency requirements.

In case of any pump sets repairs or pipeline leakages, it takes some time to fix the issues but water supply cannot be compromised. Hence, bore water was being utilized, said Mission Bhagiratha Engineer-in-Chief Krupakar Reddy.

Bore water was not being used in areas like Munugode, parts of Khammam and Mahabubnagar, which have fluoride issues. Further, the water samples were being checked thoroughly in all the villages. To this effect, about 13,000 chlorine tests kits were distributed to Village Secretary’s for conducting the tests. Senior engineers monitor the water testing on a daily basis in all gram panchayats, he said.
