45% of doctors prescriptions incomplete: ICMR study

Hyderabad: In a troubling trend, a country-wide study in government tertiary hospitals, taken up by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has indicated that nearly half of the doctors give incomplete prescriptions to patients, which is a major risk to patient safety.

The ICMR study titled ‘Evaluation of prescription of tertiary care hospitals across India for deviations from treatment guidelines and their potential guidelines’, published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research (February 2024), said that 45 per cent of the doctors in such healthcare facilities (government and private) give an incomplete prescription of which 10 per cent of the prescriptions have totally unacceptable deviations.

“The overall prevalence of deviations found was 45 per cent of which unacceptable deviations were estimated to be 9.8 per cent. To minimise the deviations, clinicians recommended online training on rational prescribing and administrative directives as potential interventions,” the ICMR study, which examined 4,838 prescriptions of which the deficiencies were found in 2,171 prescriptions, said.

Of the 4,838 prescriptions collected, 475 (which is 9.81%) had unacceptable deviations and the total number of drugs prescribed in these prescriptions was 1,696, which accounted for 3.5 drugs per prescription, the study said.

The potential cost or risk to the patients due to these incomplete prescriptions could be increased cost to the patients, probability of an increase in the number of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR) and drug interactions, development of Anti Microbial Resistance (AMR) due to drug abuse and even possibility of treatment of failure, the study pointed out.

In the study, outpatient prescriptions by physicians of various specialities in tertiary care, teaching government and private hospitals across India were analysed. Prescriptions of eligible patients exiting from OPD or hospital pharmacy were captured and analysed the prescriptions for appropriateness.

The most common drug prescribed inappropriately in the prescriptions with unacceptable deviations was pantoprazole.

The potential consequence of unacceptable deviations reported by the clinician was the increased cost of treatment.

To minimise the deviations, clinicians recommend timely prescription review and implementing continuous educational interventions on rational prescribing, the ICMR study said.

Hyderabad: Despite A Revanth Reddy levelling allegations that the land allotment by BRS government to Sindhu Foundation was illegal in April last, the Congress government now has done an about turn and allotted land to the same foundation.

In April last, Revanth Reddy had alleged that the BRS government allotted 15 acres land to the foundation. He had also assured that after coming to power, the Congress government would put all those involved in the land allotment behind the bars.

However, in January this year, the Congress government kept the orders in abeyance.

“March 2024: GO 37 was issued, revoking its abeyance orders and path was cleared for Sindhu Foundation’s land allotment. Could someone from the Congress explain what exactly happened here? If it was indeed illegal, as termed by Revanth garu, why was it reissued,” Nayini Anurag Reddy, an entrepreneur asked on X.

Learn horse riding in Hyderabad this summer

Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s horse racing culture has deep historical roots, tracing back to the era of the Nizams. While the city boasts an iconic racecourse tucked away in the lanes of Malakpet, reflecting this rich tradition of horse racing, the city is home to multiple equestrian clubs catering to a wide array of skill levels, inclusive of both children and adults.

Hyderabad Horse Riding School in Manikonda, established in 2002, boasts a distinguished clientele, including renowned personalities from the film industry. Apart from training in several equestrian activities, breeding, and hostelling horses, the club prepares students for equestrian competitions and facilitates job placements through sports quotas in various government sectors.

Champions Horse Riding Club, operating for approximately seven years in Manikonda, offers a range of equestrian activities including show jumping, show hack, sidesaddle, trail riding, barrel racing, and more, alongside the horse riding instruction. Hyderabad Polo Riding Club in Gandipet also provides sessions designed to train children for participation in professional polo competitions. Md. Azam of Telangana Horse Riding Academy in Kismathpur, which has been operational for five years, says, “During summers, many, particularly children, come to learn horse riding.

Anyone, regardless of age or skill level, can learn horse riding with us. Our oldest student, aged 85, brings great enthusiasm to the learning process, which is quite inspirational.” Furthermore, there are other esteemed clubs like Saddle Horse Riding Academy, Nasr Polo, and Stallion Horse Riding Academy, among others. These clubs have cultivated numerous professional polo players who have achieved accolades in the sport.

Additionally, besides their regular programmes, these clubs also offer guest sessions for individuals seeking a refreshing experience. “The experience was quite rejuvenating. We acquired skills in handling the reins, trotting, and controlling the horse. It was emphasised that we should never approach the horse from behind, and we learned that horses detect your intention by smelling your hand, and being able to sense fear or affection.

Surprisingly, they comprehended the coach’s commands fluently in both English and Hindi,” says Lavanya, an IT employee who attended horse riding classes. Most clubs schedule classes in the early mornings and evenings, catering to age groups from 6 years and above. During this summer, these clubs are also arranging special classes and summer camps designed especially for children. Those interested can find more information about pricing and session details by visiting the clubs’ Instagram pages or contact directly through a quick online search.

Harish ridicules CM Revanth Reddy’s promise to implement crop loan waiver by August 15

Harish Rao

Hyderabad: BRS senior leader and Siddipet MLA T Harish Rao ridiculed Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s assurance to implement crop loan waiver upto Rs 2 lakh by August 15, terming it as another attempt to deceive farmers and gain votes in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

He demanded Revanth Reddy to tender unconditional apologies to farmers for his previous electoral promise to implement crop loan waiver on December 9, during the Assembly polls.

In a strong counter to the Chief Minister’s statement, Harish Rao stated that Revanth Reddy made the announcement as he feared severe backlash from farmers in the wake of the BRS party waging a war against the Congress government in Telangana demanding for implementing the promises made to farmers of the State.

He demanded to know the fate of other electoral promises like Rs 15,000 per acre to farmers and Rs 12,000 per acre to agricultural labourers under Rythu Bharosa.

He also demanded clarification on the delay in providing monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500 to poor women under Mahalakshmi scheme and also increased social security pension of Rs 4,000 to the elderly citizens.

“The Congress government, which is not prepared to implement the promises given earlier, is making fresh promises again with the fear of losing the elections. But people of Telangana have lost faith in the party,” he said.
