Varahamurthy

This sculpture is characterized by the raised feet of Varahamurti with north-facing figure being quite incredible, said Sriramoju Haragopal, convenor, Kotha Telangana Charitra Brundam. After examining the sculpture, Sthapathi and historian Dr. Emani Shivanagi Reddy opined that the sculpture belongs to the 4th century.

At Kotla Narsimhulapalle, potsherds of the Satavahana period, a fragment of a stone ax of the Neolithic age, and a fragment of stone implements of the Mesolithic age were found. This Chinnavarahaswamy Archamurthy sculpture is reminiscent of the Narasimhaswamy plaque found in Kondamotu, and it is historically significant to find Varahamurthy now in the Birappa temple, said Sriramoju Haragopal.

Gangs of Kalapather: Fight for supremacy turns this Hyderabad neighbourhood into cauldron of crime

Hyderabad: Its fight for supremacy and revenge narratives that have turned Kalapather in the old city into a cauldron of crime. With one murder last week and two other attempts to eliminate opponents in a single night, the rowdy gangs of Kalapather are back in news.

Sources in the police point out that two gangs – led by Asad and Ashwaq, both having rowdy sheets in Kalapather police stations – were at loggerheads and their battle for dominance was spilling into violence on the old city streets. In fact, Asad along with two other associates, was arrested by police in January 2024 for conspiring to kill Ashwaq.

“It is a fight for supremacy and dominance in that area. Revenge murders are part of the fight for supremacy as both the gangs are trying to outwit the other,” said an official who earlier worked with Hyderabad Commissioner’s Task Force.

For at least three decades, different gangs vied for supremacy over localities falling in Kalapather, Falaknuma, Mailardevpally, Shahalibanda and Kamatipura police station limits. Rowdy sheeters such as Ayub Khan, Adil, Ashwaq, Rustum, Waseem, Shahnoor Ghazi, Younus had engaged in various crimes including bodily, property and narcotics offences in these areas.

In early 2002, Ayub Khan shot to notoriety after allegedly killing an advocate. Around same time, his associate, Ashwaq formed another gang and both carried out different tasks. Rowdy elements from the south west areas of the city such as Habeebnagar and Nampally started supporting small time rowdy sheeters and attempted to establish their base here.

“For dominance in the area, many bodily offences including murders took place. The gangs indulge in settling small disputes, looting gambling den, betting organizers and hawala operators. They extort money from brothel houses, PDS rice and wheat smugglers, and collect mamools from different hotels and shops,” said a police official who previously worked in old city.

While Ayub Khan reportedly reformed himself over a period of time and his associates were either killed or absconding, the vacuum was immediately filled by Ashwaq, Shahnoor Ghazi, Younus, Asad and Anwar.

“Shahnoor Ghazi was killed by his rivals. His associates later killed a couple of persons who were involved in the killing of Ghazi. At least five persons from both gangs were murdered,” said the official.

The Kalapather belt covering a radius of around 4 km has several slums and with numerous lanes and narrow by lanes making it convenient for the rowdy elements to hoodwink the police. “Only technology will not help in checking the gangs. A robust informer network should be developed and information gathered regularly about their movement,” said an ACP who previously worked as SHO Kalapather.

Congress, BJP conspiring to privatise Singareni coal mines, says KTR

Congress, BJP conspiring to privatise Singareni coal mines, says KTR

Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao charged the Congress and the BJP of colluding with each other and auctioning Telangana’s coal mines to privatise the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had joined hands with the BJP-led goverment at the Centre to undermine the profitable State-run enterprise, he said.

“By not allocating coal mines, they aim to push Singareni into losses and eventually privatise the company. Every Singareni worker understands the conspiracy by the Congress and the BJP whose representatives were seen smiling at the auction of coal mines,” he said.

In a meeting with the leaders of BRS and its affiliated Telangana Boggu Gani Karmika Sangham (TGBKS) from the Singareni area at Telangana Bhavan on Thursday, Rama Rao remembered the role of employees and workers of Singareni and other public sector organisation in the Telangana Statehood movement. He recalled that during the Sakala Janula Samme, the stalling of operations in Singareni mines affected coal supplies to five States, grabbing the attention of the entire nation.

He stated that strengthening public sector undertakings has always been a policy of the BRS. “We resisted private pressures and opted for LIC for implementing Rythu Bima and other life insurance coverage schemes. Similarly, we assigning works to PSUs like BHEL for building thermal power and irrigation projects, over private entities,” he noted.

Rama Rao said during the BRS’s nine and a half years regime, they worked tirelessly for Singareni’s development and expansion. He said former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao opposed auction of coal mines in Telangana for over nine years. “Even when the Central government auctioned two mines to private companies, we could successfully stop them from mining,” he added.

The BRS working president criticised both the Congress and the BJP over their attempts to privatise the Singareni coal mines within a short span of coming to power. “They put Telangana coal mines up for auction under the illusion that Telangana’s voice is absent in Parliament. But BRS has always fought for Singareni and will continue its fight notwithstanding its presence in the Parliament,” he said. He vowed that the BRS would safeguard the interests of Singareni workers under any circumstances.

Huge competition for engineering seats at evening colleges in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Securing a seat in evening engineering colleges is not going to be a cake walk anymore. Amid increasing demand for undergraduate engineering programmes among working professionals, the engineering colleges have introduced a specialized common entrance test, which is scheduled for July 21.

This is for the first time a test is being conducted and on the basis of merit secured in it, candidates will be admitted to undergraduate programmes offered by six engineering colleges for the academic year 2024-25.

In addition to Osmania University College of Engineering (OUCE), this year, five private engineering colleges have announced lateral entry admissions into second-year engineering. The colleges will hold classes from 6 pm to 9.30 pm during weekdays and day long theory and practical classes on Sundays.

Inset

Given the huge demand for up-skilling and reskilling of the workforce, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) offered engineering programmes for working professionals last year. In response to this decision, 12 engineering colleges in the State got a nod from the AICTE to offer engineering courses for working professionals during the academic year 2023-24. However, only OUCE, an autonomous college, admitted working professionals into its programmes on the basis of merit secured in the qualifying examination.

“This time, it has been decided to hold a common entrance test for working professionals. Last time, four candidates competed for one seat in OUCE. This time, we are anticipating more competition,” said Prof. P Chandra Sekhar, Principal OUCE and Convener CET.

Working professionals with a diploma in engineering with minimum one year full time or regular work experience is a must for admission. They should also be working in a registered industry or organization located less than 100 km radius from the admitted institution. Interested candidates can submit applications on the website https://www.uceou.edu/

Telangana HC declines to quash petition filed by senior advocate accused of bribery

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday declined to quash a criminal petition filed by a senior advocate of the High Court who is facing allegations of accepting Rs. 7 crore from a litigant with the alleged intent of bribing High Court judges to secure a favourable verdict.

Justice K Lakshman observed that the allegations levelled against the petitioner were grave. “The allegation that money was obtained to bribe the judges of this Court casts a serious doubt on the independence of judiciary and implies that justice is up for sale. Such serious allegations need to be investigated,” he said.

The petition came from a complaint filed by Dr Chintala Yadagiri, who alleged that he had engaged senior advocate Vedula Venkataramana as his counsel in a land dispute case. The complaint revealed that the advocate had demanded and received Rs.7 crore, assuring him that the money would be used to bribe High Court judges and ensure a favorable judgement. The promised judgment never happened, in fact the senior advocate failed to appear in his case, alleged the complainant. When the money was demanded back, the advocate allegedly failed to return the money, resorting to caste-based insults and threats when confronted. The advocate is alleged to have threatened the complainant of his life with the help of one Ahmed Bin Abdulla Balala, who was an MLA, the complaint disclosed.

V. Pattabhi, senior counsel for the petitioner contended that the allegations were false. He argued that the complaint was ambiguous, lacking particular dates for the purported payment, and that there was no proof to back up the assertions. The counsel further pointed that the case was civil in nature and concerned from an alleged incident occurred in 2005, and there was a significant delay of 19 years in filing the said complaint. Nimma Narayana the counsel for the defacto complainant submitted that alleged offences were cognizable in nature. The counsel highlighted that the genuineness of the allegations in the FIR could only be determined after the completion of the investigation, by relying on plethora of Supreme court judgements. The court expressed impression that certain allegations seems to be exaggerated and raised questions on the bonafides of the complaint as the complainant also agreed to proceed with an illegal agreement. The court considering the advocate’s reputation and the absence of any indication that his custodial interrogation was necessary, exercised the inherent power of the High Court under Section 482 of the CrPC and granted protection from arrest till the filing of the chargesheet. However, a condition was imposed on the petitioner to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

Justice B Vijaysen Reddy of Telangana High court granted interim nail to Shaik Afzal Hassan, Junior Assistant at office of Asst Director Survey and Land Records Khammam. The Judge was dealing with a writ plea filed challenging the action of station house officer Khammam in filing multiple FIRs on the same cause of action. The allegations were that the petitioner was involved in the falsification and fabrication of Family Members Certificate and Death Certificate of Late Mr Syed Bajee S. A complaint was registered on the petitioner at Khammam for the said offences. Earlier Afzal was granted anticipatory bail in two FIRs registered against him with sureties. The petitioner counsel said that while Afzal was complying the conditions of Anticipatory Bail, with a pre-meditated plan police registered another FIR on same day and arrested Afzal. After considering the rival contentions of both parties, the judge observed that even though the petitioner was granted anticipatory bail he was deprived of the same. Emphasizing on fundamental rights, the petitioner was granted interim bail subject to the condition of executing a personal bond for a sum of Rs.10,000 with two sureties each. The Judge further held that, interim bail shall be subject to the result of the police custody petition pending before magistrate Court.
