Good news for liver cancer patients: AIG study

Hyderabad: Good news for liver cancer patients! A combination of drugs used in treatment of liver cancer patients has proved to be very effective in disease control and resolution of tumour, a peer-reviewed study taken-up by Hyderabad-based Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), on Wednesday said.

The results of the study, which included liver cancer patients from Hyderabad and Jaipur, and published in Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology (July-August, 2023), have indicated that a combination of Atezolizumab-bevacizumab drugs is safe and effective in treating liver cancer patients in real world settings.

Till now, there were no studies from India that reported the safety and efficacy of this combination drug in real-world settings where most of the patients, who were part of the study, were in an advanced stage of liver cancer.

Liver cancer patients from AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad and Mahatma Gandhi Hospitals, Jaipur, between November 1, 2020 and July 1, 2022, underwent a minimum of at least 3-cycles of Atezolizumab-bevacizumab drug therapy. The patients were suffering from liver cancer due to a variety of ailments including alcohol consumption (cirrohosis), non-alcoholic Hepatitis, Hepatitits B and C.

The major take away from study was the Disease Control Rate, which is the percentage of people who after receiving this treatment, either showed improvement (partial response) or at least didn’t get worse (stable disease) was 66.1 percent. The Overall positive Response (ORR), also known as the Objective Response Rare from the study was 38.7 percent, indicating that they responded well to the treatment.

A total of 25.8 percent of the patients who were part of the study group showed partial resolution of the tumour while 12.9 percent of patients achieved complete resolution of the tumor, the AIG study said.

The combination of locoregional therapy (minimally invasive surgeries) along with the Atezolizumab-bevacizumab drugs is an upcoming strategy to achieve a complete response i.e. absence of all detectable cancer after completion of treatment, and prolong survival, the researchers said.

Patients who received Y90-TARE (procedure to target tumour without damaging healthy tissue of the liver tumor) followed by Atezolizumab-bevacizumab therapy have achieved 100 percent overall positive response from the patients, the study said.

Monin’s arrival to bolster TS food processing ecosystem: KTR

Hyderabad: IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao said the food processing eco-system was gaining momentum in Telangana, with the establishment of a unit of French gourmet flavourings company Georges Monin SAS – Monin, proving the State government’s efforts in this direction. He reminded that Coca-Cola and Pepsi along with chocolate maker Mars and other companies in the food processing sector had already established their largest units in the State.

Being established in a 40-acre land at Gunthapally village of Kondapur mandal in Sangareddy district on the outskirts of Hyderabad, the unit is expected to create 150 direct jobs and 200 indirect jobs. The company will invest Rs.300 crore in the first phase of the facility, which will house its India headquarters and its first R&D facility and manufacturing unit in India, aimed to cater to local markets and South Asia.

Addressing the gathering after laying the foundation for construction of the Monin unit at Gunthapally on Wednesday, Rama Rao said Telangana, which earlier attracted global majors like Google, Amazon and Apple, was fast becoming home for French giants including Safran, Schneider, SDG, Teleperformance, Thillios and many others. He appreciated the Monin management over its commitment to invest Rs.300 crore and assurance to operationalise the entire unit in just 18 months.

The Minister suggested Monin to expand its facility as India itself offers one of the largest markets in the world. The company could also export its products to various parts of the South and South East Asia, he said, urging the company to provide employment opportunities to local youth and assured the State government’s support to provide skill development and training in this regard.

The Minister also asked local elected representatives to support companies like Monin to successfully complete construction of their plans and operate smoothly. “Success of such companies will only attract more investments in this area and create better employment opportunities for local youth,” he said, adding that Monin was a zero waste and zero pollution plant. He also remarked that out of the eight States it visited, Monin chose Telangana which was testament to the development of the State.

Consul General of France in Bengaluru Thierry Berthelot and George Monin SAS president and chairman Olivier Monin, Monin India Managing Director Germain Araud along with Principal Secretary (IT and Industries) Jayesh Ranjan, Telangana State Handloom Corporation chairman Chintha Prabhakar and others were present.

BRS only alternative to Congress at national level: Kavitha

BRS only alternative to Congress at national level: Kavitha

Jagtial: BRS MLC K Kavitha on Wednesday said the Bharat Rashtra Samithi was the only alternative to the Congress at the national level since the graph of the grand old party has declined drastically. That is why the TRS has been updated to the BRS.

Stating that Congress leaders were unable to catch up with Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, Kavitha said AICC leader and MP Rahul Gandhi was an outdated leader who was unable to update himself. Gandhi was unable to prevent Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Though the Telangana government had already distributed podu land pattas, AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge had announced to distribute podu land pattas if the Congress party was voted to power in the next elections. While the State government was giving Rs.10 lakh to dalits under Dalit Bandhu, the Congress in its SC/ST declaration announced to give Rs.12 lakh.

Instead of copying the State government’s schemes, Congress leaders lacked creativity and commitment. The party was rejected by the people across the country since it was reeling under corruption, Kavitha said while participating in a BRS workers’ Atmeeya Sammelanam in Chelgal market yard, Jagtial on Wednesday.

Talking about the CWC meeting scheduled in Hyderabad, Kavitha asked AICC leader Sonia Gandhi to make her party’s stand clear on the women’s reservation bill and farmers’ schemes before conducting the meeting in Hyderabad. Were the schemes, which were being implemented in Telangana, implemented in any States across the country, she asked.

Reinterpreting her previous definition of the word KCR (Kaluvalu (canals), Cheruvulu (tanks) and Reservoirs), she said that KCR was a Kindhearted, Committed and Responsible leader.

Training guns at Congress MLC T Jeevan Reddy, Kavitha asked the people not to believe the statements of the Congress leader. After winning from Jagtial assembly constituency in 2018, BRS MLA Dr M Sanjay Kumar had taken up various developmental works with Rs.130 crore sanctioned by the State government. However, Jeevan Reddy could not get even Rs.13 crore sanctioned.

Welfare Minister Koppula Eashwar, MLC L Ramana, Korutla MLA K Vidhyasagar Rao, Zilla Parishad chairperson Dava Vasantha and others were present.
