Hyderabad: Is the Bharatiya Janata Party jittery as 2024 gets closer? The answer could be yes, which is why the party appears to be thinking of multiple strategies including the One Nation One Election move.

Now the question comes why the BJP, which handsomely won the last two general elections, should be jittery. The answer is simple. The aura of invincibility that Narendra Modi enjoyed in the run-up towards the 2019 general elections has evaporated. The strong probability of a sharp fall in the number of seats (303) it has in the Lok Sabha, indicating the possibility of a coalition government which in turn means the BJP will need more allies, and even worse, the fear of loss, all have combined to give sleepless nights to the saffron party.

The rumblings have been there for quite some time, with the Assembly elections in different States tearing off the coat of supremacy that Modi was wearing ever since he became PM in 2014 and also after 2019. Rhetoric has been the weapon he uses to cover up, and one classic example was how he declared that the North East was with the BJP in March this year.

Fact is that the BJP could not improve on its tally at all in the North East and even in Tripura, where it managed a single majority, the number of seats had come down from 36 to 32. In Meghalaya and Nagaland, too, the BJP continued being in the government only because of support from the National People’s Party and the Nationalist Democratic People’s Party, though the number of seats for the BJP had remained the same as in 2018, 12 in Nagaland and two in Meghalaya.

Look at the overall picture. In the total seats of 180 in the three North Eastern states of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya, the BJP won just 46. Apart from losing four in Tripura compared to 2018, in Nagaland, it was a distant number 2 winning just 12 seats out of a total of 60. It had contested in 20 seats. In Meghalaya, it contested in 59 out of 60 seats, and won just two. However, with support from local regional parties, it is in power in all the three States.

Another development that the BJP-supportive national media chose to ignore was that in the assembly by-election at Kasba Peth in Pune, also held in February, BJP lost the seat to the Congress after holding the seat for 28 years. BJP also lost its government in Himachal Pradesh and the Delhi Municipal Corporation which it controlled for 15 years.

Then take a look at the other Assembly elections where the BJP lost even when Modi was in power. It was voted out in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Goa and Maharashtra. In Maharashtra, the Shiva Sena had formed a government with support of the Congress, but the BJP engineered a split in the Sena and is now in power, so was the case in Goa too.

In Jharkhand, BJP lost to the JMM-Congress alliance, while in Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, it has not been able even to taste power.

The Karnataka results came as another nail in the coffin. This was the mother of all defeats, but not just because BJP, which won 104 out of 224 seats in 2019, was forced to settle for just 66. This defeat had much more to it, given Modi’s campaign blitzkrieg ahead of the polls.

According to reports, Modi met over 3,000 people during his seven days in Karnataka, including party workers, professionals, prominent people and Padma awardees to canvas votes, addressed 18 rallies, held a virtual interaction with the entire party cadre, and led six roadshows, three of them in Bengaluru. A defeat after all that was a shocker and though many said it was because the BJP ignored local issues and local leaders, it pointed to the undeniable fact that the name Modi was not working for the BJP anymore, and perhaps, why 2024 is giving BJP the jitters.

Telangana: Lorry driver follows Google Maps into reservoir; A narrow escape

Lorry is being pulled out of Gouravelly reservoir in Akkannapet Mandal of Siddipet district on Wednesday morning.

Siddipet: In an unusual incident, a lorry driver and his cleaner from Tamil Nadu found themselves in a precarious situation when they followed Google Maps’ directions early on Wednesday. The driver, identified as Shiva, and his cleaner, Mondaiah, were on their way to Husnabad but were unfamiliar with the local roads.

Due to the construction of the Gouravelly reservoir as part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS), the previous road to Husnabad via Gudatipally and Gouravelly was submerged. A new route had been established downstream of the reservoir to divert traffic. However, Google Maps inadvertently guided them onto the old, submerged road.

As there were heavy rains in the area in recent days, the driver and cleaner mistook the submerged road for rainwater due to the darkness. It wasn’t until their lorry’s engine stopped working as water entered that they realized their predicament.

The Gouravelly reservoir was holding over 2 TMCft of water, nearing its full storage capacity of 8.23 TMCft. The driver and cleaner were forced to swim to safety around 2 am on Wednesday and sought assistance from locals in Gouravelly village. With the help of the community, they managed to retrieve their vehicle from the water the following morning using a JCB after it developed technical issues. The lorry was later taken to a nearby garage for repairs.

Kishan Reddy ends 24-hour fast for unemployed youth in Telangana

Hyderabad: Union Minister and BJP Telangana unit president G Kishan Reddy on Thursday concluded his 24-hour fast against the BRS government’s alleged negligence towards unemployed youth.

Former Union Minister Prakash Javadekar, who is BJP’s election in-charge for Telangana, offered lime juice to Kishan Reddy marking the conclusion of the fast.

Reddy began his fast on Wednesday at the Dharna Chowk here.

However, he was “forcibly” shifted by police from the Dharna Chowk Wednesday evening for “continuing” the protest beyond the permitted time.

Mild tension prevailed at the Dharna Chowk on Wednesday evening as BJP activists raised slogans and opposed the police action even as Reddy was shifted to the state BJP headquarters.
Reddy, however, continued his fast at the party office.

BJP General Secretary Tarun Chugh, in-charge of party affairs in Telangana, on Wednesday night condemned the police action and claimed that Reddy fell unconscious at the protest site.

“Permission for the protest was issued from 10 am to 6 pm but they did not follow the timings and did not vacate from the protest site,” a senior police official told PTI Wednesday night.

Asked about Reddy falling unconscious, police said it could be due to dehydration.

Kishan Reddy, on his request, was subsequently shifted to the Telangana BJP office, the official had said.
Condemning the police action, Telangana BJP General Secretary G Premender Reddy called for protests on Thursday.

In a release Wednesday night, Premender Reddy also said the matter was taken to the notice of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president J P Nadda.

Shah had spoken to Kishan Reddy over phone and told him to continue the struggle against the BRS government on people’s issues, the release said.

Two persons crushed to death by ash tanker in Kothagudem

Kothagudem: Two persons were crushed to death by an ash tanker at railway under bridge in Kothagudem during late night hours on Wednesday.

The deceased, Edulapuram Srinivas (50) of Ramnagar in Chunchupally mandal and Rani (45) of Mathura Basthi were travelling on a motorbike when the incident took place. The ash tanker skid and fell on the bike killing the duo on the spot.

The incident caused a huge traffic jam on the road. A local P Reshwanth informed the police and SCCL rescue team, who rushed to the spot to clear the traffic. The rescue team had to work until early hours of Thursday to retrieve the dead bodies trapped under the tanker.

The under bridge has become a hot spot for accidents in which scores of persons have lost their lives. Due to lack of a by-pass road in the town heavy vehicles carrying goods to ITC, Nava Bharat and others enter the town after 10 pm posing danger to the lives of the people.

Drivers park their vehicles at St. Mary’s School, SCCL High School, Yellandu cross roads and enter the town at 10 pm at once causing huge traffic jams as it was the time business establishments closed and workers return home, the locals said.

A resident A Deepak Kumar alleged that the under bridge which was constructed in 2003 has turned a bane for Kothagudem residents. When it rains there would be huge water logging and the bridge with a curve lacks road banking to provide required centripetal force to the vehicles to take a safe turn.

Originally the government proposed to construct a flyover in place of a railway level crossing near Kothagudem railway station. But the then Kothagudem legislator and the contractor colluded and changed the proposal to build the under bridge.

It was done to save the property of a hotel on one side of the road undermining the interests of the residents in the town, Kumar complained while demanding the authorities to take measures to prevent accidents at under bridge.
