Adivi Sesh looks back at his 14 years in cinema, roles that deeply impacted him

Mumbai: Actor Adivi Sesh has completed 14 years in Indian cinema. In these 14 years, there are few roles that have left a profound impact on him as an actor.

Adivi spoke with IANS, and shared that his trilingual film ‘Major’ in which he essayed the role of the martyred Indian Army Officer, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, makes him proud.

The actor told IANS, “I think the film I’m by far most proud of is ‘Major’ just in terms of being able to try and do justice to the great man’s life as much as we could and to get some sort of validation even today from his parents about what they thought was good in the film”.

He went on, “I think on some level my first hit, ‘Kshanam’, was sort of my, a lot of people consider my best film which comes from a different place. It comes from raw anger and hunger. So maybe it has a certain edge that others don’t, I don’t know, but a lot of people consider ‘Kshanam’ my best work”.

He then spoke about the greatest impact on the zeitgeist, and the cultural impact in all the films he has done.

He said, “‘Goodachari’, which is why we’re also doing ‘G2’ (Goodachari 2), the sequel to ‘Goodachari’, because frankly just because of how fun it is for a lot of audiences to watch it. It has an extremely big repeat audience on television and I’m looking forward to blowing people’s minds with ‘G2’”.

When asked how he looks back at his journey of 14 years, the actor told IANS, “I think when you come from outside the business, your first few years are spent just trying to get your feet on the ground, trying to understand what exactly is right, what exactly isn’t, who is making a genuine offer, who isn’t, who is right for you, who isn’t. So much of your time in the beginning is spent just trying to learn the unknown. And I think that’s exactly what my journey was, maybe until about the first five years that I’d set foot in Hyderabad from about 2010 to 2015, was just spent learning, making mistakes and learning from them”.

He further mentioned, “And from then on it’s been a very clear upward trajectory towards building credibility and finding meaning from it. You get to a stage in life, you’re truly secure, you know you’re truly secure when you get to a stage in life where the results of a movie are extremely important but the process of making that film becomes just as important. So you want to make a great movie but you want to have a lot of fun doing it too. And I think that’s where I’m at right now”.

The actor also expressed his wish to venture into production in future, as he said, “I think maybe venture into production, give a platform to new talents, for them to showcase things in ways that I couldn’t when I first started. So I definitely think production might be on the cards”.

IRGC's military advisor martyred in attack by Takfiri terrorists in Syria

A military advisor of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has been martyred in Syria after foreign-backed Takfiri terrorists and anti-Damascus militants launched a major attack on the Syrian military positions in the northwestern province of Aleppo.

“Brigadier General Kioumars Pour Hashemi, known as Haj Hashem, one of the defenders of the [Sayyida Zaynab] Shrine and senior IRGC military advisers in Syria, was martyred in overnight attacks by Zionist Takfiri terrorists on the outskirts of Aleppo,” the IRGC said in a statement Thursday.

The Iranian military advisors, who are present in Syria at the official invitation of the Syrian government, have played an important role in helping the Syrians fight terrorism and establish peace, stability, and lasting security in the Arab country.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-sponsored militancy since March 2011, with Damascus saying the Western states and their regional allies are aiding terrorist groups to wreak havoc in the Arab country.

Terror outfits are seeking to hinder the Syrian government’s efforts aimed at consolidating security and stability in the country, which is also under the Israeli regime’s regular aggression.

Israel has been the principal supporter of terrorist groups that oppose the democratically-elected government of President Bashar al-Assad since the foreign-backed militancy erupted in Syria.

Tel Aviv has significantly ramped up its strikes since last October, when it began a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, in what has been described by observers as a reckless bid threatening to further fuel tensions throughout the region.

The Israeli regime has carried out hundreds of attacks against Syria since 2011, when the Arab nation found itself in the grip of rampant foreign-backed militancy and terrorism.

On Wednesday, members of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) terrorist outfit and their allied armed factions reportedly attacked at least 10 areas under the control of the Syrian military in the west of Aleppo city and the eastern countryside of Idlib.

More than 130 people including soldiers as well as militants from both sides were said to be killed as a result of the heavy clashes.

Civilians, including children, had been killed and injured in the clashes, which saw Syrian army forces fire “hundreds of shells and missiles on civil and military positions” during the fighting.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based monitor, said, on Thursday that 65 HTS members were killed along with 18 from allied militant groups and 49 members of government forces.

The Syrian army, in a statement carried by state news agency SANA on Thursday, said “a huge and large-scale terrorist attack, with large numbers of terrorists and using medium and heavy weapons”, had targeted villages, towns and military sites.

Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen television network cited a Syrian source in Idlib as saying that HTS had directed all hospitals in the city and the northern countryside to stop surgeries and prepare to treat only the militants injured in the battles.

The source said the terrorist outfit used rocket launchers and mortars to pave the way for advancing towards the Syrian army points in Qabtan al-Jabal, Bala and Sheikh Aqil in the west of Aleppo.

The Syrian army forces were also reported to have pounded areas near militant-held Idlib city and the cities of Ariha and Sarmada along with other areas in southern Idlib Province.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly known as the Nusra Front, is considered a terrorist organization by Syria, Russia, and several other countries.

Yemen’s leader hails Lebanon's victory over US-backed Israel

“Lebanon’s victory at this critical and sensitive stage in confronting the Israeli enemy was a gift from the Almighty God, and came following an unprecedented level of [Israeli] aggression against the nation and Hezbollah,” al-Houthi said on Thursday.

“The bloody military campaign against Lebanon and Hezbollah was heavily supported by the US. Washington shares the Tel Aviv regime’s disappointment, and is definitely complicit in the Zionist entity’s aggression and crimes,” he added.

He said Israeli officials had spoken of delivering painful and severe blows on Hezbollah, and even complete defeat of the Lebanese resistance group.

However, Hezbollah’s large-scale missile and drone attacks on Israeli positions, reaching as far as Tel Aviv within the occupied territories, well exhibited its military capabilities and prowess, Houthi said.

The Ansarullah leader emphasized that the victory of Hezbollah in standing up to the Zionist aggression once again showed that Israel could be defeated.

“The Lebanese victory was the fruit of patience, practical efforts, and preparation, leading to divine support,” he said, stressing that Hezbollah’s steadfastness stems from its readiness on both spiritual and material levels, enabling resilience and triumph.

The Ansarullah leader further noted that the US seeks to downplay Hezbollah’s victory using diverse strategies to contain its political impact.

Houthi stated that the responsibility of the Muslim world to support Palestinians in the Gaza Strip has become even greater following Lebanon’s victory.

The Ansarullah chief also said a concerted effort across the Axis of Resistance is essential to aid the Palestinian people.

Building upon Lebanon’s achievements, escalations are crucial, especially from Iraq and Yemen, he said.

Houthi welcomed the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrants for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former minister of military affairs Yoav Gallant, stating that the rulings should have been issued at the onset of the Gaza carnage.

He emphasized that the Yemeni armed forces are determined to keep up their anti-Israeli retaliatory operations until the Gaza genocide stops.

“The US continues to exert economic pressure, even through the UN and other organizations, on us in the hope that we would change our stance. All these bids are in vain as they will not succeed in changing our position,” the Ansarullah leader said.

“Israelis claim they want to isolate Gaza, but we are telling them: We will not allow such a thing to ever happen.”

Houthi stressed that Yemeni forces are present and steadfast in all fields.

He finally called upon all walks of Yemeni society to take to the streets across the country on Friday and participate in massive rallies in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.

Hyderabad: Indian Super League (ISL) action returns to the GMC Balayogi Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday as Hyderabad FC (HFC) face Odisha FC. After a morale-boosting 2-1 away victory over Kerala Blasters FC before the FIFA International break, HFC are eager to maintain their momentum.

Speaking ahead of the match, Hyderabad FC head coach Thangboi Singto expressed satisfaction with the team’s recent performances. “The win against Kerala Blasters was a big positive for us. We’re looking to carry that rhythm forward despite the long break, which can sometimes disrupt continuity. However, the break allowed us to rest, analyse our opponents and prepare well,” he said.

Hyderabad FC will be aiming for their third win in four games as they take on the ninth-placed Juggernauts, who have struggled for form and remain winless in their last three fixtures. Despite Odisha FC’s position on the table, Singto was cautious, highlighting the strength and experience of their opposition. “Odisha have a highly accomplished coach in Sergio Lobera, who has previously won the league. Their squad features some of the league’s best foreign players like Roy Krishna, Diego Mauricio, Hugo Boumous, Ahmed Jahouh, Carlos Delgado and Mourtada Sergine Fall. It’s going to be a tough game, but we’re prepared,” he added.

The two teams have faced each other 10 times in the ISL. Hyderabad and Odisha have won four and five games respectively, and one match resulted in a draw. For Lobera’s side, the season has been underwhelming thus far, with nine points from eight matches. If Hyderabad score on Monday, it will mark the second time since the 2020-21 season that Odisha have conceded in each of their first nine ISL matches. For Lobera, one of the league’s most brilliant tacticians, it’s a record he will be eager to correct.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad FC’s campaign has shown promising signs after a difficult previous season. They have managed two wins and a draw in seven matches, collecting seven points. Currently placed 11th, HFC trail sixth-placed Punjab FC by just five points, keeping their playoff aspirations alive.

Singto emphasised the team’s growth this season. “The perception of Hyderabad FC has changed. Last season, teams took us lightly, but that’s no longer the case. We’ve built a strong squad with good bench strength. Our focus is to secure a win against Odisha and climb up the table,” he concluded.

Forex traders said the Indian rupee touched new all-time lows weighed down by negative domestic markets which fell nearly 1.18 per cent.

Rupee falls 4 paise to hit all-time low of 84.11 against US dollar

Mumbai: The rupee on Monday fell 4 paise to a record low of 84.11 (provisional) against the US dollar, tracking a weak trend in domestic equities and relentless foreign capital outflows.

Forex traders said the Indian rupee touched new all-time lows weighed down by negative domestic markets which fell nearly 1.18 per cent. A recovery in crude oil prices and FII outflows also dented investor sentiments.

However, the softening of the US dollar prevented a sharp fall.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.07 against the US dollar. During the session, the local currency oscillated between a high of 84.06 and a low of 84.12. It finally settled at its all-time low of 84.11 (provisional), a loss of 4 paise from its previous close.

On Thursday, the rupee edged up 1 paisa to 84.07 against the US dollar.

The forex market remained closed on Friday on account of Diwali. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.52 per cent to 103.73 points.

US dollar declined on disappointing non-farm payrolls report and ISM manufacturing PMI data from the US on Friday. The US added only 12,000 jobs in October 2024 versus forecast of 106,000 jobs while ISM manufacturing PMI fell to 46.5 in October, falling short of expectations of 47.6, Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, said.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, surged 2.63 per cent to USD 75.02 per barrel in futures trade.

“We expect the rupee to trade with a negative bias on weak domestic markets and sustained FII outflows. However, softening of US dollar amid disappointing jobs markets may support the rupee at lower levels. Traders may take cues from factory orders data from the US today and FOMC meeting outcome later this week,” Choudhary said.

“USDINR spot price is expected to trade in a range of 83.95-84.30,” Choudhary added.

In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was down 941.88 points, or 1.18 per cent, to close at 78,782.24, while Nifty declined 309 points, or 1.27 per cent, to settle at 23,995.35.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Friday, as they offloaded shares worth Rs 211.93 crore, according to exchange data.

Meanwhile, India’s forex reserves dropped USD 3.463 billion to USD 684.805 billion in the week ended October 25, the Reserve Bank of India said on Friday.

The overall reserves had dropped USD 2.163 billion to USD 688.267 billion in the previous reporting week. In end-September, the reserves had hit an all-time high of USD 704.885 billion.

Russia blasts ‘terrorist attacks on Syria sovereignty’, hopes for rapid restoration of order

Russia has slammed the terrorist attacks in Syria as a violation of the Arab country’s sovereignty.=

On Friday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the terrorist onslaught as “an attack on Syria’s sovereignty.”

He expressed hope that Damascus would swiftly restore the situation. “We would like the Syrian authorities to restore order there as soon as possible,” RT quoted him as saying.

On Wednesday, Takfiri militants led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham launched a large-scale attack in Aleppo and Idlib provinces in the northwest of the country, seizing several areas.

On Friday, the Arabic-language Al-Mayadeen television network reported the Syrian army halted the advance of terrorists in southeastern Idlib and launched a counterattack to regain ground.

According to al-Mayadeen, fierce battles were ongoing in western Aleppo.

Four large-scale offensives launched from the city of Anadan, north of Aleppo, were also foiled on Thursday.

Russian and Syrian warplanes bombed militant-held areas in northwest Syria near the border with Turkey on Thursday to push back the militant offensive.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since 2011 with Damascus blaming the Western countries and their regional allies for aiding the terrorist groups.

Russia, alongside Iran, has assisted Syrian forces in battles across the conflict-plagued country, mainly by providing aerial support to ground operations against foreign-backed terrorists.

Hyderabad Task Force nab couple peddling drugs; Seizes drugs worth Rs 20 lakh

Hyderabad: The Task Force (West) team along with local police caught a couple from Assam on charges of drug peddling at Begumpet here on Saturday. Officials seized about 254 grams of Amphetamine drug worth Rs 20 lakh from them. A total of 11 drug consumers were also detained.

The arrested persons are Atif Aslam Khan (34) and his wife Subhani Begum (22), residents of Prakash Nagar in Begumpet, and natives of Silchar in Assam.

According to the police, Atif who earlier owned a mobile phone SIM cards shop in Assam took to drug peddling as his income seemed meager to fund his family expenses. Subsequently, he came into contact with a person named Pronay Das, a drug peddler from Assam and procured the psychotropic substance from him.

“The drug was smuggled into Hyderabad in trains and sold to customers, mostly known to him at a higher rate. For traveling across the city, Atif bought a used scooter and was transporting drugs in it,” said a Task Force official.

Based on a tip-off, the Task Force nabbed the couple and seized the drug, apart from detaining 11 drug consumers.

"There is no statute of limitation for war crimes"

“On Int’l Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare, we pay tribute to Iranian soldiers & civilians martyred or injured by deposed Saddam regime’s chemical attacks during 1980-88 imposed war,” said Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghaei in a post on X on Saturday.
