US media releases new alleged details on Iran nuclear program

Iran informed the International Atomic Energy Agency about plans to install more centrifuges to enrich uranium in response to an IAEA resolution that criticized Tehran for allegedly insufficient cooperation with the organization, Reuters claimed, citing an IAEA report.

According to the alleged report, enrichment wouldn’t exceed 60% purity, a level that is set by the nuclear industry development plan.

The Agency also claimed that Tehran informed the IAEA that eight recently added cascades of IR-6 machines would enrich uranium to up to 5% purity.

On November 21, the IAEA Board of Governors in a 19-3 vote adopted a West-backed resolution accusing Iran of allegedly insufficient cooperation with the organization. Twelve board members abstained. According to the resolution, the IAEA should prepare a detailed report on Iran’s nuclear program by spring 2025. Iran responded by announcing its intention to bring online a significant number of new centrifuges for uranium enrichment.

France ‘takes note’ of Chad's decision to end military coop.

Chad, which currently hosts roughly 1,000 French soldiers, announced it terminated the agreement with France on Thursday.

“For nearly two years France has been thinking about the reconfiguration of its military postures in Africa,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that “in this context a close dialogue is being conducted with the Chadian authorities, who expressed their wish to see the security and defense partnership redefined.”

Chad’s Foreign Ministry said the decision was informed by the country’s desire to redefine its strategic partnerships, Anadolu Agency reported.

“The Government of the Republic of Chad informs national and international opinion of its decision to terminate the defense cooperation agreement signed with the French Republic,” a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry said.

The statement, signed by Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah, said after six decades of independence, it is time for the country to “assert its full sovereignty and to redefine its strategic partnerships according to national priorities.”

It said the decision to terminate the agreement, which was revised in September 2019, was in no way indicative of a deterioration of the historical relations and bonds of friendship between the two nations.

Chad “remains determined to maintain constructive relations with France in other areas of common interest, for the benefit of both peoples.”

Authorities promised to respect the modalities provided for in the provisions of the agreement, including the notice period, and to collaborate with French authorities to ensure a smooth transition.

The decision was announced as French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot visited the West African country.

Barrot, who arrived in the capital N’Djamena on Wednesday, held talks with Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Deby on Thursday.

Their discussions focused in particular on the humanitarian emergency in the east of the country resulting from an influx of Sudanese refugees fleeing the war in their country, the Sudanese crisis, and prospects for bilateral cooperation, the president’s office said in a statement.

Chad joins other Sahel countries including Niger and Mali in ending security and defense partnerships with their former colonial masters.

In August 2023 in the aftermath of the ouster of elected President Mohamed Bazoum, Niger’s military leaders announced the scrapping of military agreements with France as they looked more towards Russia for defense cooperation.

This came after Mali’s junta in 2022 announced the same decision to break off from defense agreements with France.

Meanwhile, Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has told French media he seeks to end the presence of French troops in his country.

There are currently 350 French soldiers in the West African nation.

Musk takes dig at US, hails India for counting ‘640 million votes in 1 day’

Tesla CEO’s remarks come after California is yet to count over 3,00,000 ballots

Musk takes dig at US, hails India for counting ‘640 million votes in 1 day’

Elon Musk

Washington: Taking a dig at the the United States, Tesla CEO Elon Musk applauded the Indian electoral system after vote counting for two State Assembly elections and by-elections were concluded in a single day.

“India counted 640 million votes in 1 day. California is still counting votes,” wrote Musk on X, while sharing a screenshot of an article on Indian election vote counting. Musk was responding to an X post that shared a news article with the Headline “How India Counted 640 Million Votes in a Day”.

The post was captioned “Meanwhile in India, where cheating isn’t the primary goal of their elections”. Musk responded to another post on X which said, “India counted 640 million votes in a single day. California is still counting 15 million votes — 18 days later.”

Over two weeks have passed, however, California is yet to count over 3,00,000 ballots, reports said. It’s been weeks now since Donald Trump was declared the winner of the US elections and the President-elect of the US. California is the most populous state in the US with nearly 39 million residents. It saw the participation of at least 16 million voters in the November 5 polls.

However, it has been among the slowest States to tally and report election results in recent years. The delay is primarily because of its vast size and predominance of mail-in voting. According to election officials, it could take weeks to call the poll, as was the case in the 2020 presidential election. California’s elections largely rely on mail-in voting which requires more time and effort to process as compared to in-person voting. Each mail-in ballot has to undergo individual validation and processing, a process that takes longer than simply scanning ballots at polling stations.

Earlier on October 17, Musk hailed the Indian government’s decision to allocate spectrum for satellite broadband administratively rather than through the auction route. “Much appreciated. We will do our best to serve the people of India with Starlink,” Musk wrote on X, as he scored a win over Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Bharti Mittal who had been batting for the auction of spectrum to ensure a “level-playing field”.

Chad ends defense coop. agreement with France

In a statement, Chad’s foreign ministry said the country fully asserts its sovereignty after more than six decades of independence.

It said the decision to end the defense cooperation agreement revised in 2019 would enable it to redefine its strategic partnerships, Reuters news agency reported.

Chad has cooperated closely with Western nations’ military forces in the past, but it has moved closer to Russia in recent years.

The decision is another nail in the coffin of France’s historic and colonial role in West and Central Africa after being forced to pull its troops out of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso following the military coups.

In a further blow to France, Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye said in an interview with French state TV on Thursday that it was inappropriate for French troops to maintain a presence in his country.

He stopped short of saying if or when French troops would be asked to leave but said Paris would be the first to know. Around 350 French troops are based in Senegal.

Iran emphasizes strengthening rail coop. among SCO members

Zakeri made the remarks during the 5th meeting of the heads of railways from member countries of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) held in Moscow, Russia, on Saturday.

He proposed organizing a trilateral meeting between Iran, Russia, and the Republic of Azerbaijan to standardize tariffs and enhance freight transportation.

Additionally, he proposed the formation of an expert working group to identify issues, eliminate obstacles and challenges in border areas, assess routes that are not connected to existing rail networks, and develop a financial model to attract necessary investment for the construction of these routes.

The CEO of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, known as RAI, highlighted that Iran, given its strategic position as a bridge between East and West Asia and a connecting route between the significant continents of Europe and Asia, aims to strengthen partnerships and cooperation in transit and logistics with the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Describing the development of bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the field of transportation and transit as crucial, he underlined that the efforts to promote east-west and north-south transit routes that pass through Iran are essential.

He considered the North-South Intercontinental Corridor consists of the Southern Belt Pass, which connects China to Europe; the Almaty-Bandar Abbas Pass; the Almaty-Tehran-Istanbul Rail Pass, and the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul Corridor as one of the most important rail crossings, noting that Iran Railways is working to enhance international crossings from Iran by improving conditions, facilitating logistics, and increasing the capacity necessary for transporting goods from China, Russia, and Central Asian countries to Iran, India, Pakistan, and Europe.

Also, Zakeri emphasized that the North-South Corridor is one of the most significant rail transportation projects, adding that high-level negotiations are currently taking place between the Iranian and Russian governments to complete the Rasht-Astara railway line in Iran.

Mogadishu: Two boats capsized off the Madagascar coast in the Indian Ocean, leaving 24 people dead, Somalia’s government said on Sunday.

Somalia‘s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi said 46 people were rescued.

“We are working tirelessly to ensure the survivors are brought back home safely and provided with the necessary care,” he said.

Most of the passengers were young Somalis and their intended destination remains unclear. Many young Somalis embark every year on dangerous journeys in search of better opportunities abroad.

A delegation, led by the Somali Ambassador to Ethiopia, is scheduled to travel to Madagascar on Monday to investigate the incident and coordinate efforts to help survivors.

Fiqi also said on Sunday that Somalia’s Ambassador to Morocco will look into a separate report of Somali youth stranded on Morocco’s coastline. It is not clear when the Morocco incident took place and Fiqi did not provide details.

The UN migration agency has in the past raised concern over rising cases of irregular migration from the Horn of Africa countries as people flee from conflict and drought.

In April, 38 migrants died and 22 others were rescued from a shipwreck off Djibouti on a popular route to Yemen. Most of those rescued were of Somali and Ethiopian nationalities.

US approves $385 mln arms sale to Taiwan

The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the sale consisted of $320 million in spare parts and support for F-16 fighters and Active Electronically Scanned Array Radars and related equipment.

The State Department also approved the potential sale to Taiwan of improved mobile subscriber equipment and support for an estimated $65 million, the Pentagon said. The principal contractor for the $65 million sale is General Dynamics.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said it expected the sales to “take effect” within a month and that the equipment will help maintain the F-16 fleet’s readiness and “build up a credible defense force”.

“Taiwan and the United States will continue to strengthen their security partnership and work together to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region,” it said in a statement.

Last month, the United States announced a potential $2 billion arms sale package to Taiwan, including the delivery for the first time to the island of an advanced air defense missile system battle-tested in Ukraine.

Iran, Russia FMs discuss Syrian developments by phone

In a telephone conversation, Abbas Araqchi and Sergey Lavrov vowed their countries’ firm support for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, including the country’s government and army in confronting terrorist groups amid the recent developments.

They considered it necessary to pursue the issue within the framework of the Astana Process (Astana Format) and the need for coordination between Iran, Russia, and Turkey as the three guarantors of the process.

Recalling the duty of the international community in confronting the terrorism, the Iranian foreign minister considered the recent movements of terrorist groups in Syria as part of the Zionist regime’s and the US’s plot to destabilize the West Asian region, emphasizing the need for greater vigilance and coordination between Iran, Russia, and regional countries, especially Syria’s neighbors, to neutralize the dangerous conspiracy and confront the actions of terrorists in Syria and the region.

Beirut: Israeli airstrikes on southern and eastern Lebanon killed at least 36 people and injured 17 others injured, according to media reports.

The strikes on the eastern Lebanese governorate of Baalbek-Hermel killed 11 people, including eight in a residential apartment in the village of Nabi Chit and three others in Hermel, the official National News Agency ( NNA) reported on Monday.

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon killed 25 people, including nine in the village of Maarakeh, three in the village of Ain Baal, two in the town of Ghazieh, 10 in the Tyre district, and one in the village of Yohmor, the NNA reported, adding that the airstrikes also injured 17 people in Tyre.

On Monday, Hezbollah targeted Shraga Base, the administrative headquarters of the Golani Brigade Command, north of the occupied city of Acre, with a barrage of rockets, the NNA reported.

Hezbollah also hit Israeli forces in two moshavim in northern Israel, and in the Malkiyeh settlement, the report said, adding that Hezbollah targeted an Israeli force sheltering in a house in Al-Bayada during its withdrawal, destroying the structure and inflicting multiple casualties among the force, Xinhua news agency reported.

On Monday, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on social media platform X condemned constant strikes on the Lebanese Armed Forces as “a flagrant violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and international humanitarian law, which limits the use of violence against those not participating in hostilities”.

UNIFIL also urged all parties involved in the conflict to address their differences through negotiations instead of violence. The Lebanese army said the Israeli military has been repeatedly targeting its soldiers recently. In the latest attack on Sunday, an Israeli airstrike targeted a Lebanese army post in the Ameriya axis on the Qlaileh-Tyre road in southwestern Lebanon, killing one soldier and injuring 18 others.

Since September 23, the Israeli army has intensified its air attack on Lebanon in an escalation of conflict with Hezbollah. Israel further initiated a ground operation across its northern border into Lebanon in early October.

IRGC's military advisor martyred in attack by Takfiri terrorists in Syria

A military advisor of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has been martyred in Syria after foreign-backed Takfiri terrorists and anti-Damascus militants launched a major attack on the Syrian military positions in the northwestern province of Aleppo.

“Brigadier General Kioumars Pour Hashemi, known as Haj Hashem, one of the defenders of the [Sayyida Zaynab] Shrine and senior IRGC military advisers in Syria, was martyred in overnight attacks by Zionist Takfiri terrorists on the outskirts of Aleppo,” the IRGC said in a statement Thursday.

The Iranian military advisors, who are present in Syria at the official invitation of the Syrian government, have played an important role in helping the Syrians fight terrorism and establish peace, stability, and lasting security in the Arab country.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-sponsored militancy since March 2011, with Damascus saying the Western states and their regional allies are aiding terrorist groups to wreak havoc in the Arab country.

Terror outfits are seeking to hinder the Syrian government’s efforts aimed at consolidating security and stability in the country, which is also under the Israeli regime’s regular aggression.

Israel has been the principal supporter of terrorist groups that oppose the democratically-elected government of President Bashar al-Assad since the foreign-backed militancy erupted in Syria.

Tel Aviv has significantly ramped up its strikes since last October, when it began a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, in what has been described by observers as a reckless bid threatening to further fuel tensions throughout the region.

The Israeli regime has carried out hundreds of attacks against Syria since 2011, when the Arab nation found itself in the grip of rampant foreign-backed militancy and terrorism.

On Wednesday, members of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) terrorist outfit and their allied armed factions reportedly attacked at least 10 areas under the control of the Syrian military in the west of Aleppo city and the eastern countryside of Idlib.

More than 130 people including soldiers as well as militants from both sides were said to be killed as a result of the heavy clashes.

Civilians, including children, had been killed and injured in the clashes, which saw Syrian army forces fire “hundreds of shells and missiles on civil and military positions” during the fighting.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based monitor, said, on Thursday that 65 HTS members were killed along with 18 from allied militant groups and 49 members of government forces.

The Syrian army, in a statement carried by state news agency SANA on Thursday, said “a huge and large-scale terrorist attack, with large numbers of terrorists and using medium and heavy weapons”, had targeted villages, towns and military sites.

Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen television network cited a Syrian source in Idlib as saying that HTS had directed all hospitals in the city and the northern countryside to stop surgeries and prepare to treat only the militants injured in the battles.

The source said the terrorist outfit used rocket launchers and mortars to pave the way for advancing towards the Syrian army points in Qabtan al-Jabal, Bala and Sheikh Aqil in the west of Aleppo.

The Syrian army forces were also reported to have pounded areas near militant-held Idlib city and the cities of Ariha and Sarmada along with other areas in southern Idlib Province.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly known as the Nusra Front, is considered a terrorist organization by Syria, Russia, and several other countries.
