UK PM Rishi Sunak faces resistance over his smoking ban plans

London: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faces very vocal resistance against his plans to effectively ban smoking for anyone aged 15 and younger as a new bill comes up for a vote in the House of Commons on Tuesday.

The British Indian leader proposed the Tobacco and Vapes Bill last year and declared his vision for creating a “smokefree generation” by making it an offence to sell tobacco products to anyone born after January 1, 2009, which covers children aged 15.

Once it clears its parliamentary journey, the new legislation will introduce some of the world’s strictest anti-smoking laws in the country. “I propose that in future we raise the smoking age by one year, every year.

That means a 14-year-old today will never legally be sold a cigarette and that they — and their generation — can grow up smoke-free. We know this works,” Sunak had declared at the Conservative Party conference in October last year.

As there is Opposition backing for the bill in Parliament and governing Conservative MPs have a free vote on the bill, any Tory votes against the bill will not be seen as a full-blown rebellion against the Prime Minister.

But two of Sunak’s immediate predecessors, Liz Truss and Boris Johnson, have been leading a very vocal group of Tories who plan to vote against the bill as “un-Conservative” and taking away choice from the public.

“The truth is that there is no safe level of tobacco consumption. It is uniquely harmful, and that is why we are taking this important action today to protect the next generation,” said UK Health Secretary Victoria Atkins.

“This Bill will save thousands of lives, ease the strain on our NHS [National Health Service], and improve the UK’s productivity,” she said.

Under the new law, smoking itself would not be criminalised, and anyone who can legally buy tobacco will not be prevented from doing so.

The ban aims to stop people from smoking even before they start as the government pointed to its highly addictive nature, with four in five smokers picking it up before the age of 20, remaining addicted for life.

If passed, the bill will progress to the next stage, bringing the UK closer to creating the first smoke-free generation, the government says.

Under the plans, trading standards officers would get new powers to issue on-the-spot 100-pound fines to shops selling tobacco or vapes to children, with all the money raised going towards further enforcement.

“This historic legislation will consign smoking to the ‘ash heap of history’,” said Deborah Arnott, head of the charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH).

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill would also give the government new powers to tackle youth vaping by restricting flavours and regulating the way that vapes are sold and packaged to make them less appealing to children.

The UK’s Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said while vaping can play a useful role in helping adult smokers to quit, non-smokers and children should never vape. The long-term health impacts of vaping are unknown, and the nicotine contained within them can be highly addictive, it warned.

According to official figures, responsible for around 80,000 deaths annually, smoking is the UK’s single biggest preventable killer and costs the NHS and economy an estimated GBP 17 billion a year — more than the GBP 10 billion annual revenue from tobacco taxation.

Slightest act against Iran’s interests will be met with ‘painful response’: Raeisi

President Ebrahim Raeisi has warned that any slightest action against Iran’s interests will be met with an “extensive and painful response.”

Raeisi issued the warning during a telephone conversation with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Monday, two days after Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones at the occupied territories in retaliation for Israel’s terrorist attack against the Islamic Republic’s diplomatic premises in Syria.

“Now, we declare with conviction that the slightest action against Iran’s interests will definitely be met with a severe, extensive and painful response against all its perpetrators,” the Iranian president said.

Israel’s April 1 strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which killed seven members of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), demonstrated the regime’s “frustration” caused by its failure to achieve its declared goals during the genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, he added.

Raeisi also complained about the inaction of the United Nations and its Security Council on the Israeli crimes in Gaza and their failure to condemn Israel’s terrorist raid on Iran’s consulate.

Therefore, he noted, the Islamic Republic “designed and conducted” a retaliatory operation against “the same centers that had done acts of mischief against us, exercising our legitimate right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.”

The Iranian chief executive further underlined the need for taking acts of deterrence, especially by Muslim countries, against Israel as it keeps committing crimes in Gaza.

The indiscriminate support of some Western countries for the Zionist regime is fueling tensions in the region, he asserted.

“The Zionists’ child-killing, genocide and horrific crimes have continued with the full support of the US and some Western states, while the oppressed and powerful people of Gaza are still victorious in the battlefield thanks to their resistance.”

‘A clear message’

Sheikh Tamim, for his part, praised Iran’s tactful measure in designing and carrying out the retaliatory operation against Israel, saying it sent a clear message to everyone.

He also referred to Qatar’s condemnation of Israel’s deadly attack that violated international agreements and conventions, as well as diplomatic norms.

As the globe is witnessing the highest level of convergence in support of the Palestinian cause, the Zionist regime is escalating tensions in a bid to divert the world’s public opinion from its Gaza crimes, he added.

He further hailed the unique relations between Iran and Qatar that are based on mutual trust, saying the two countries have been supporting each other in all circumstances.

Yemen resistance alongside Palestinians deters Israel crimes

In a phone conversation with Mahdi al-Mashat, Chairman of the Supreme Political Council of Yemen, While honoring the support of the people and combatants of Yemen for the oppressed and powerful people of Gaza, Ebrahim Raeisi stated that these supports make the Islamic Ummah proud and will remain in minds of freedom-seeking nations in the world.

Referring to the deceitful and hypocritical behavior of the Western countries regarding the criminal actions of the Zionist regime, he considered the US and the Western countries as the biggest violators of human rights in the world today.

He clarified that the silence and inaction of these countries and international organizations during six months of horrific crimes and genocide in Gaza has encouraged the Zionist regime to commit more crimes and increase tension in the region.

The Iranian president also noted the development of relations between Iran and Yemen will benefit the two countries, two nations, and the Islamic world.

Mahdi al-Mashat, for his part, congratulated the honorable operation of Iran’s armed forces against the aggressive action of the Zionist regime in attacking the Iranian consulate in Syria.

Chairman of the Supreme Political Council of Yemen stated that Iran’s armed forces operation restored honor and dignity to the Islamic nation, emphasizing that the Resistance Front is united and always adheres to confronting the Zionist regime and supporting Iran.

He also emphasized his country is interested in expanding and strengthening relations and interactions with Iran in various fields.

Iranian military says will “cut the foot of aggressor”

Reacting to support by certain Western leaders to the Israeli regime, Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said, “We remind the heads of state of the United States, Britain, France and Germany to stop supporting the moribund, evil, law-breaking, terrorist and child-killing regime of Israel.”

He added, “You know well that the Islamic Republic of Iran has proven that it is not warmongering and is not also seeking to spread the war.”

But, the senior military spokesman said, if any country, including the United States, Britain, France and Germany, and the “desperate and helpless” regime of Israel do a military adventure against Iran “we will cut its feet more powerfully” than the one Iran did against the “aggressor and evil regime of Israel” in response to its deadly air raid on the Iranian diplomatic premise in Syria on April 1.

“We advise you, instead of condemning the legitimate and legal act of the Islamic Republic of Iran, be wise and do not support the illegitimate, stupid and terrorist regime (of Israel) which has been caught in the quagmire and don’t put yourself in the burning oven,” Shekarchi asserted.

According to the United Nations Charter and the Vienna conventions attacks on diplomatic and consular premises are a violation of international law.

No evidence Iran is building nuclear weapons: IAEA chief

Rafael Grossi, who has traveled to New York, explained to reporters when asked about new developments in Iran’s nuclear program.

Despite some political claims about Iran for having high levels of enriched uranium reserves, it does not mean that the country has nuclear weapons, the IAEA chief clarified.

“As far as the Agency is concerned – of course, we must be careful when making public comments – we do not have any information or indications that Iran has a nuclear weapons program”, he further said.

Grossi also expressed his satisfaction about Iran’s cooperation with the nuclear watchdog.

Our inspectors in Iran were informed by the Iranian government that all the nuclear sites were closed for security reasons and were re-opened today to continue inspections, but I have decided that our inspectors will resume work from tomorrow, he explained, adding that the recent tensions have not affected the agency’s activities.

Grossi also expressed hope that he will go to Tehran within the next few weeks to meet with Iranian officials and discuss cooperation.

The IAEA has on numerous occasion said that cooperation between Iran and the agency is “sustained” and is based on principles of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and safeguards agreements.

Two years after the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) inked in 2015 and the procrastination of the European parties in fulfilling their obligations under the agreement, Iran took steps based on the deal to reduce its obligations.

Iran scaled back its commitments under the JCPOA in several phases as enshrined in Articles 26 and 36 of the UN-endorsed accord. But the country has always emphasized that the measures taken are reversible and whenever the other parties to the deal fulfill their obligations.

The secretary general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has condemned the Israeli regime’s recent terrorist attack against the Iranian diplomatic premises in Syria.

Zhang Ming made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Monday, a day after the Islamic Republic retaliated for Israel’s deadly strike on its consulate in Damascus.

He said all SCO members are concerned about the current situation in West Asia and want the restoration of security to the region.

The SCO chief also appreciated Iran’s efforts towards establishing regional peace and security, calling for the expansion of international cooperation aimed at ending the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, as well as normalizing the situation in Palestine and helping its people.

The top Iranian diplomat, for his part, hailed the successful holding of the 19th Meeting of the SCO Security Council Secretaries in Kazakhstan’s Astana early this month and the positive role played by the Eurasian bloc in critical issues, especially the fight against terrorism.

On April 1, Israeli warplanes bombed the consular annex of Iran’s embassy in Damascus.

The terrorist air raid killed 13 people, including seven members of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) who were on an advisory mission to Syria.

Overnight on Saturday and early Sunday morning, Iran exercised its inherent right of self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter and conducted a large-scale retaliatory operation.

The Iranian Armed Forces launched hundreds of missiles and drones at military sites in the occupied territories and warned of a much harsher response against any further act of aggression by the Tel Aviv regime.
