Pak To Accept 'Hybrid' CT Plan? PCB Chief Attends Big Meeting Amid Hosting Row

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi met Emirates Cricket Board head Mubashir Usmani in Dubai amid deliberations on a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy to be held in February-March next year. According to a PCB statement regarding the meeting, Naqvi told Usmani that Pakistan was ready to host the Champions Trophy and all the preparations were on schedule. Usmani is also the chairman of the ICC’s associate members’ committee. According to sources, Naqvi also said that the situation in Pakistan was stable and all teams taking part in the mega-event would be provided state level security. He said the construction work at the stadiums which will host the tournament was also on schedule and the people of Pakistan were looking forward to watching the best teams and players play in the country.

On Friday, the International Cricket Council has told Pakistan to either accept the ‘Hybrid’ model of hosting for next year’s Champions Trophy or be prepared to be ousted from the event after the PCB’s adamant stand led to an inconclusive meeting of its executive board.

The emergency meeting in Dubai was meant to thrash out the schedule of the event in February-March next year but could not achieve a consensus after Pakistan once again rejected the ‘Hybrid’ model despite India’s firm refusal to travel there owing to security concerns.

It is understood that most of the ICC board members were sympathetic towards Pakistan’s situation, but Naqvi was, nonetheless, advised to accept the ‘Hybrid’ model as the only “plausible solution” for the current imbroglio.

If a ‘Hybrid’ model is adopted, India’s share of Champions Trophy matches will be held in the UAE.

Maduro says Palestine ‘most just cause’, Israel behind Aleppo attack

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has reiterated his country’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause, calling it the “most just cause for humanity.”

Speaking at the International Conference in Solidarity with Palestine on Friday in Caracas, Maduro stated, “If you look at the reasons for the struggles since the last century to create a just world, the Palestinian cause is the most just cause for humanity.”

The significance of the date coincides with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which was established by the UN General Assembly in 1977 and is observed annually on November 29. This date marks the anniversary of the 1947 resolution that proposed the partition of Palestine.

In a resolution passed on December 1, 2005, the General Assembly requested that the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the Division for Palestinian Rights organize annual exhibits or cultural events celebrating Palestinian rights, in collaboration with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN.

Maduro emphasized the importance of the Palestinian cause, which he stated holds a “central place” among humanitarian struggles advocating for independence, peace, and a fair state. “Palestine is the cause that unites humanity,” he added.

“We will continue to support the Palestinian cause in the strongest ways,” Maduro said, asserting, “The day will come when we will meet in the streets of Al-Quds as victors.”

The Venezuelan president also cautioned against complacency with regard to the Israeli regime.

“Notice how the Zionists signed the agreement and then turned to Syria, launching attacks through the terrorist groups they sponsor, which are now attempting to take control of Aleppo,” he said.

“The Zionists and their supporters aim to invade, crush the Arab people, and seize the wealth of the Arab nations,” he noted.

Indian Fast Bowlers Share Insights On Pink Ball Ahead Of Adelaide Test

As the Indian cricket team prepares for the upcoming pink-ball Test in Adelaide starting December 6, fast bowlers Akash Deep and Yash Dayal have shared their experiences and observations about the challenges and nuances of bowling with the pink ball. Reflecting on his experience, Akash Deep highlighted the unique characteristics of the pink ball compared to the traditional red ball. “It’s skidding, it’s difficult for the batters, it has got more bounce,” Akash explained in a video posted by BCCI on their official website.

“The main thing about this ball is that it remains new for a long time. Generally, what we see with the red ball is that it starts getting old after 5-6 overs,” he said.

Yash Dayal, who has been bowling to Indian batting stalwarts in the nets, shared his observations on the pink ball’s behaviour.

“What I felt bowling this ball in nets to Rohit (Sharma) bhaiyya and Virat (Kohli) bhaiyya is that it’s not swinging much,” Yash noted.

“You have to keep the seam position straight. If you pitch the ball in the right areas, then it might change directions,” he added.

The Indian team heads into this Test with renewed confidence, having secured a victory against Australia in the first Test in Perth. The memory of being bowled out for 36 in their last pink-ball Test against Australia will undoubtedly linger, but the team’s recent success adds a layer of optimism.

The insights from Akash Deep and Yash Dayal provide a glimpse into the team’s preparation and strategic considerations as they aim to tackle the pink-ball challenge and continue their winning momentum in the series.

In the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India won the toss and elected to bat but managed only 150 runs. Nitish Kumar Reddy (41 off 59 balls, six fours, one six) and Rishabh Pant (37 off 78 balls, three fours, one six) added a crucial 48-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Josh Hazlewood (4/29) was Australia’s standout bowler, while Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh, and Mitchell Starc claimed two wickets each.

Australia’s response was dismal, collapsing to 79/9 before a late partnership between Mitchell Starc (26) and Alex Carey (21) took them to 104, conceding a 46-run lead. Jasprit Bumrah led India’s bowling with 5/30, while debutant Harshit Rana impressed with 3/48.

India dominated in the second innings. KL Rahul (77 off 176 balls, five fours) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (161 off 297 balls, 15 fours, three sixes) put on a 201-run opening stand. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 100 (143 balls, eight fours, two sixes), supported by Washington Sundar (29 off 94 balls, one six) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (38* off 27 balls, three fours, two sixes), took India to 487/6 declared, setting Australia a target of 534.

Nathan Lyon (2/96) was Australia’s most effective bowler, while Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood took a wicket each.

At stumps on Day 3, Australia were reeling at 12/3, with Bumrah taking two wickets and Mohammed Siraj one. On Day 4, valiant efforts from Travis Head (89 off 101 balls, eight fours) and Mitchell Marsh (47 off 67 balls, three fours, two sixes) couldn’t save Australia, as they were bowled out for 238, handing India a commanding 295-run victory.

Bumrah (3/42) and Siraj (3/51) starred in the second innings, with Washington Sundar taking two wickets and Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana chipping in with one each.

Stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his eight wickets in the game.

Syrian Rebels Control 'Most' Of Aleppo City Amid Clashes: War Monitor

Beirut, Lebanon:

A monitor of Syria’s war said on Saturday that jihadist rebels now control a majority of Aleppo city, reporting Russian air strikes on parts of Syria’s second city for the first time since 2016.

The rebels have pressed a lightning offensive against forces of the Iranian- and Russian-backed Syrian government since Wednesday, the same day a fragile ceasefire took effect in neighbouring Lebanon between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, a Damascus ally, after two months of all-out war.

“Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied factions… took control of most of the city and government centres and prisons”, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

HTS, a jihadist alliance led by Al-Qaeda’s former Syria branch, controls swathes of the Idlib region, in Syria’s northwest, as well as parts of neighbouring Aleppo, Hama and Latakia provinces.

Overnight, Russian “warplanes launched raids on areas of Aleppo city for the first time since 2016”, added the Britain-based Observatory, which relies on a network of sources inside Syria.

It raised the death count in days of clashes to 311 — 183 from HTS and allied Turkish-backed factions, 100 soldiers and pro-government forces, as well as 28 civilians.

State media reported that four civilians were killed when HTS shelled a student residence in Aleppo, a city of around two million people that was Syria’s pre-war manufacturing hub.

Iran-backed militias have a heavy presence in the Aleppo region after providing crucial ground support when the Syrian army — backed by Russian air power — recaptured rebel-held areas of the city in 2016.

Cheering

An AFP correspondent saw rebels celebrating and cheering inside Aleppo late Friday. Another correspondent saw anti-government fighters in front of the city’s landmark citadel.

The Observatory said that “the governor of Aleppo and the police and security branch commanders withdrew from the city centre”.

The overnight air strikes coincided with “the arrival of large (rebel) military reinforcements” to the area, the Observatory added, after on Friday reporting the jihadists and their allies had taken more than 50 towns and villages in the north.

Army reinforcements have arrived in Aleppo, a Syrian security official told AFP on Friday, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, while an army statement said troops had repelled the assault on the city and retaken some positions.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP early Saturday that rebel fighters swiftly captured swathes of Aleppo without meeting significant resistance, adding “there has been no fighting, not a single shot was fired, as regime forces withdrew.”

The jihadists and their allies made other advances in the north, including seizure of the strategically located town of Saraqib, on the road to Aleppo about 40 kilometres (25 miles) southwest, the Observatory had said.

The Russian military said Friday it was bombing “extremist” forces, as Turkey demanded a halt to bombardment on the Idlib region.

Since 2020, the Idlib area has been subject to a Turkey and Russia-brokered truce which had largely been holding despite repeated violations.

A 'Note To Media' In Businessman Raj Kundra's Scathing Post Amid Raids

Raj Kundra has denied the charges and said he was made a “scapegoat” in the case (File)

Mumbai:

Businessman Raj Kundra has written a scathing note on Instagram amid raids at his house and offices as part of a money laundering probe linked to the production and distribution of pornographic content. Stating that he’s fully cooperating with the investigation, he said it was “unacceptable” for the media to use his wife and actor Shilpa Shetty’s name amid the probe.

“While the media seems to have a flair for drama, let’s set the record straight: I’m fully complying with the ongoing investigation that has been unfolding for the last four years,” he said in an Instagram story late Friday night. “As for the claims of ‘associates’, ‘pornography’ and ‘money laundering’, let’s just say that no amount of sensationalism will cloud the truth, in the end, justice will prevail,” it further read.

In a “note to the media”, he also asked them to respect the privacy of his family. “It’s unacceptable to repeatedly drag my wife’s name into unrelated matters. Please respect the boundaries,” he said.

Shilpa Shetty’s lawyer has also clarified that she had “nothing to do with any offence” and trashed the media reports of her being raided as “misleading”.

Mr Kundra’s remarks follow raids by the Enforcement Directorate at his 15 premises, including his Juhu residence.

The 49-year-old businessman is accused of being involved in a scheme that monetised explicit content streamed via the ‘Hotshots’ app. The app was earlier available on Apple and Google Play, but was removed after public and legal scrutiny.

Mr Kundra faces allegation that he used his company, Armsprime Media Pvt Ltd, to manage the app’s operations and later facilitated the app’s sale to the UK-based Kenrin Pvt Ltd, which helped the streaming of explicit content.

Aspiring actors were allegedly lured by the ‘Hotshots’ app under the pretext of web series auditions and then coerced into filming semi-nude or nude scenes against their wishes. Cops claim that they found evidences in Mr Kundra’s phone of financial transactions linked to the UK-based company and selling 119 adult films for $1.2 million.

Mr Kundra, who was arrested in the case in 2021 by Mumbai Police and later granted bail, has denied the charges and said he was made a “scapegoat” in the case. He has also claimed that he had no active involvement in the production of pornographic content.

He is also being probed for his alleged involvement in a crypto-ponzi scheme by Amit Bhardwaj, who was the mastermind behind the Gain Bitcoin Scam. The ED attached assets worth Rs 98 crore, belonging to him and his wife, earlier this year over charges that they acquired the proceeds from illicit activities.
