Italy In Talks With India On Port Cooperation, Blue Economy: Report

Mumbai:

Italy is reportedly in talks with India to expand cooperation on port infrastructure, including ship and yacht manufacturing sectors. The discussion encompasses broader areas of blue economy and space exploration, Bloomberg News reported on Saturday, citing Italian Industry Minister Adolfo Urso.

India and Italy share cultural and trade ties dating back centuries, the report cited Mr Urso, who is also Minister of Made in Italy, as saying.

This means the two nations are well placed to build a “Cotton Route” as an alternative to China’s “Silk Route,” investing in ports, logistics, data and information technologies such as undersea cables, he said while speaking to Bloomberg on the sidelines of the Tour Vespucci in Mumbai on Saturday.

On the issue of the potential impacts of the Middle East war on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), the Italian leader said that “war is all around us in Europe.”

He, however, said that an alternative is needed, as the Russia-Ukraine war has disrupted continental routes. It will also help alleviate pressure on the Suez Canal, the Minister said.

Replying to a question about prospects of IMEC finding support under the upcoming US President Donald Trump’s administration, Mr Urso said the corridor meets the strategic needs of both the US and Europe.

IMEC is an initiative to establish a new trade and logistics corridor linking the Mediterranean with the Indo-Pacific via the Middle East.

India- Italy “Informal” Talks

Meanwhile, Union Shipping, Ports and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday told reporters that India and Italy held “informal” talks on Saturday.

When asked about developments on the upcoming IMEC, the Minister said Italy has made some wishes and added that India will take the necessary steps on this aspect.

“Both India and Italy are strong maritime nations having advanced space programmes,” Sonowal said, stressing that ecology and economic aspirations have to go hand in hand.

“From the enormousness of the ocean to the infinite vastness of space, the potential and benefit of the India-Italy partnership is immense,” he said.

The Minister also invited Italian museums to collaborate with India for the upcoming National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Gujarat’s Lothal.  The Union Cabinet had recently given the nod for the NMHC, which is estimated to cost over Rs 3,500 crore, as per some reports.

India-ItalyTies

Italy and India share common interests and joint challenges in the Indo-Mediterranean Sea, a region vital for global trade. Recently, both India and Italy have intensified their bilateral relationship, advancing cooperation across political, economic, and defence sectors.

This partnership has the potential to position both India and Italy as major players in the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean region, where stability and collaboration are essential for global trade and security.

In 2023, India with Italy, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, France, Saudi Arabia, Germany, and the European Union agreed to establish the India–Middle East Economic Corridor (IMEC) to enhance global trade and counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The IMEC aims to connect a combined GDP of US $47 trillion with a comprehensive infrastructure network and focuses on high-efficiency trade routes, renewable energy, digital infrastructure and improved international communication networks, according to a report by East Asia Forum.

Cyclone Fengal Makes Landfall, Likely To Cross Tamil Nadu Coast In 3 Hours

Barricades blocking access to famous beaches were put up in Chennai.

Cyclone Fengal has started making landfall near the Puducherry coast and it likely take the storm to cross the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next three to four hours, said the weather office India Meteorological Department or IMD.

Here are the top 10 points in this big story:

  1. Heavy rain and gusty winds triggered by the storm preceded the landfall and disrupted flight and train services in Chennai. Several hospitals and houses were also flooded in the capital city.

  2. Schools and colleges in several districts in Tamil Nadu have been shut and hundreds of people moved inland to storm shelters ahead of a powerful cyclone storm set to hit the region on Saturday.

  3. In the neighbouring union territory Puducherry, people living in low-lying areas were evacuated and the administration sent SMS alerts cautioning residents to brace for the cyclone.

  4. Part of the Chennai airport was inundated and hundreds of passengers were impacted due to multiple flight cancellations. Operations at the airport will be suspended till 4 am on Sunday.

  5. As many as 20 flights were cancelled in Hyderabad as well which were services to and from Chennai and Tirupati.

  6. The heavy rain also impacted train services in Chennai with the Southern Railway announcing changes in services.

  7. Barricades blocking access to famous beaches, including the Marina and Mamallapuram, were put up in Chennai.

  8. In a rain-related incident, a migrant worker who tried to withdraw cash from an ATM in Chennai, was reportedly electrocuted.

  9. The forecast urged fishing crews to stay off the water and predicted surging waves of one metre (three feet) that posed a flood risk to low-lying coastal areas.

  10. Fengal skirted the coast of Sri Lanka earlier this week, killing at least 12 people including six children.

50-Year-Old Worker Shot Dead By Landowner In Tamil Nadu: Police

50-Year-Old Worker Shot Dead By Landowner In Tamil Nadu: Police

Further investigation is underway, say cops (Representational)

Erode:

A 50-year-old headload worker was shot dead by a landowner at Gobichettipalayam on Friday midnight, police said.

Vijay (26), an engineering graduate, was travelling with his father Kannan, 50, a headload worker, and his brother Murthy on a moped, according to police.

They were on their way to a hospital for Kannan’s treatment when the moped ran out of fuel near Nagarpalayam, about a kilometer from Gobichettipalayam. Vijay left his father and brother to refuel the moped at a nearby outlet, police said.

Upon returning, he found both had vanished and immediately called Murthy, who returned to the location, police added.

At around 12.15 am, Murthy arrived, and the brothers began searching for their father. They found Kannan standing on private land owned by Janakiraman, where Mohanlal, the owner’s son, was also present. As they approached there, Mohanlal shot Kannan twice with a gun, police said quoting Vijay.

Kannan collapsed and died due to gunshot wounds in his chest and stomach, police added.

Gobichettipalayam police arrived, found Kannan’s body with an aruval (sickle) in his hand, and detained Mohanlal, who was holding the weapon.

On Saturday morning, Kannan’s relatives staged a roadblock near Modachur weekly market, demanding Mohanlal’s arrest. Police are interrogating Mohanlal at the Gobichettipalayam station and probing the motive behind the murder.

BJP Announces Swearing-In Date As Maharashtra Deadlock Continues

BJP Announces Swearing-In Date As Maharashtra Deadlock Continues

The oath-taking ceremony of the new Maharashtra cabinet has been announced by the BJP, but there’s no word yet on who will occupy the Chief Minister’s post. The ceremony will take place at 5 pm on December 5 at Mumbai’s iconic Azad Maidan.

The event will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said BJP Maharashtra chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule while making the announcement.

Six days into the declaration of the poll results, the BJP has not yet called a meeting of its MLAs-elect nor appointed the party’s legislature party leader.

Eknath Shinde, the caretaker Chief Minister, is at his native village in Satara district. He has taken ill, said an aide amid buzz that he was not happy with the way the new government was shaping up.

With 132 seats in the 288-member house, the BJP emerged the single largest party in the state when the results were announced on November 23. Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) – the other members of the Mahayuti alliance – won 57 and 41 seats, respectively. The Mahayuti seat count stands at 230. The majority mark is 145.

The Congress, the BJP’s national rival, won just 16 seats, adding Maharashtra to its anthology of electoral losses in the recent times. Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena faction won 20 seats and Sharad Pawar’s party, the other NCP faction, won 10 seats. The two parties, along with the Congress, form the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance. The Opposition combine’s seat total is at a paltry 46 seats.

Hectic discussions have been on, both in Delhi and Mumbai, but there’s still no clarity who will be the face of the new coalition government.

Earlier this week, Eknath Shinde, the outgoing Chief Minister, said he would not be an “obstacle” and go by the decision of the BJP Central leadership regarding the top post. This effectively clears the way for Devendra Fadnavis, who has been Chief Minister twice and was deputy Chief Minister in the last Eknath Shinde-led government, the front-runner in the race.

Ajit Pawar’s party has already stated that Mr Fadnavis was acceptable to it as Chief Minister.

Devendra Fadnavis will be chosen as the next Chief Minister, Union Minister and Republican Party of India-Athawale (RPI-A) chief Ramdas Athawale, a BJP ally, had claimed this week, adding to the buzz around the leader.

Adivi Sesh looks back at his 14 years in cinema, roles that deeply impacted him

Mumbai: Actor Adivi Sesh has completed 14 years in Indian cinema. In these 14 years, there are few roles that have left a profound impact on him as an actor.

Adivi spoke with IANS, and shared that his trilingual film ‘Major’ in which he essayed the role of the martyred Indian Army Officer, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, makes him proud.

The actor told IANS, “I think the film I’m by far most proud of is ‘Major’ just in terms of being able to try and do justice to the great man’s life as much as we could and to get some sort of validation even today from his parents about what they thought was good in the film”.

He went on, “I think on some level my first hit, ‘Kshanam’, was sort of my, a lot of people consider my best film which comes from a different place. It comes from raw anger and hunger. So maybe it has a certain edge that others don’t, I don’t know, but a lot of people consider ‘Kshanam’ my best work”.

He then spoke about the greatest impact on the zeitgeist, and the cultural impact in all the films he has done.

He said, “‘Goodachari’, which is why we’re also doing ‘G2’ (Goodachari 2), the sequel to ‘Goodachari’, because frankly just because of how fun it is for a lot of audiences to watch it. It has an extremely big repeat audience on television and I’m looking forward to blowing people’s minds with ‘G2’”.

When asked how he looks back at his journey of 14 years, the actor told IANS, “I think when you come from outside the business, your first few years are spent just trying to get your feet on the ground, trying to understand what exactly is right, what exactly isn’t, who is making a genuine offer, who isn’t, who is right for you, who isn’t. So much of your time in the beginning is spent just trying to learn the unknown. And I think that’s exactly what my journey was, maybe until about the first five years that I’d set foot in Hyderabad from about 2010 to 2015, was just spent learning, making mistakes and learning from them”.

He further mentioned, “And from then on it’s been a very clear upward trajectory towards building credibility and finding meaning from it. You get to a stage in life, you’re truly secure, you know you’re truly secure when you get to a stage in life where the results of a movie are extremely important but the process of making that film becomes just as important. So you want to make a great movie but you want to have a lot of fun doing it too. And I think that’s where I’m at right now”.

The actor also expressed his wish to venture into production in future, as he said, “I think maybe venture into production, give a platform to new talents, for them to showcase things in ways that I couldn’t when I first started. So I definitely think production might be on the cards”.

Russia blasts ‘terrorist attacks on Syria sovereignty’, hopes for rapid restoration of order

Russia has slammed the terrorist attacks in Syria as a violation of the Arab country’s sovereignty.=

On Friday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the terrorist onslaught as “an attack on Syria’s sovereignty.”

He expressed hope that Damascus would swiftly restore the situation. “We would like the Syrian authorities to restore order there as soon as possible,” RT quoted him as saying.

On Wednesday, Takfiri militants led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham launched a large-scale attack in Aleppo and Idlib provinces in the northwest of the country, seizing several areas.

On Friday, the Arabic-language Al-Mayadeen television network reported the Syrian army halted the advance of terrorists in southeastern Idlib and launched a counterattack to regain ground.

According to al-Mayadeen, fierce battles were ongoing in western Aleppo.

Four large-scale offensives launched from the city of Anadan, north of Aleppo, were also foiled on Thursday.

Russian and Syrian warplanes bombed militant-held areas in northwest Syria near the border with Turkey on Thursday to push back the militant offensive.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since 2011 with Damascus blaming the Western countries and their regional allies for aiding the terrorist groups.

Russia, alongside Iran, has assisted Syrian forces in battles across the conflict-plagued country, mainly by providing aerial support to ground operations against foreign-backed terrorists.

"Daaka Daalne Ki Koshish": Ex-Pak Star On ICC's 'Champions Trophy' Ultimatum

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is in danger of losing the hosting rights of the 2025 Champions Trophy after refusing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s demands of a hybrid model. Despite BCCI’s firm refusal to send its team to Pakistan owing to security concerns, the PCB has time and time again refused to accept there demands. While the ICC is trying its best to sort out the issue, both the PCB and BCCI have not been able to achieve common ground. During Friday’s inconclusive meeting, the ICC has warned the PCB to either accept the ‘Hybrid’ model of hosting for next year’s Champions Trophy or be prepared to be ousted from the event.

However, former Pakistan batter Basit Ali has slammed the ICC and BCCI, who according to him are trying to rob the hosting rights from PCB. On reports of Pakistan set to be snubbed from the event, Basit feels that a tournament without India and Pakistan would not be feasible.

“Who won in the meeting — ICC, BCCI or PCB? And How could the meeting end so quickly? Ab pata chalega, Pakistan ko ek kaum bana diya hai BCCI ne (now they will get to know, the Indian board has united Pakistan)…Even those who were against the PCB, they are saying ‘Whatever (PCB chairman) Mohsin Naqvi says, we will stick to that,” Basit said on his YouTube channel.

“Yeh insaaf nahi hai, ke hamari Champions Trophy pe aap daaka daalne ki bharpoor koshish kar rahe hain (it’s not justified that they are trying to rob Pakistan of Champions Trophy hosting),” he added.

During Friday’s emergency meeting, which has now been adjourned, the the ICC board members were sympathetic towards Pakistan’s situation, but PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi was, nonetheless, advised to accept the ‘Hybrid’ model as the only “plausible solution” for the current imbroglio.

If a ‘Hybrid’ model is adopted, India’s share of Champions Trophy matches will be held in the UAE.

“Look, no broadcaster will give a penny to an ICC event which does not have India and even Pakistan knows that. The ICC meeting on Saturday will only happen if Mr Mohsin Naqvi agrees with the ‘Hybrid Model’,” an ICC Board source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Why Thousands Of Georgian Are Protesting In Tbilisi After EU Bid Halted

Thousands of protesters returned outside the parliament in Tbilisi on Saturday to protest against the Georgian government’s decision to suspend European Union (EU) membership talks amid a post-election crisis. Police deployed water cannons, tear gas and pepper sprays to confront the pro-European protesters, who have been on the streets since Georgia’s ruling party on Thursday said it was halting EU accession talks until 2028.

Protesters carrying Georgian and EU flags marched towards the Soviet-built parliament building. They hurled fireworks at police officers, while authorities forced them away from the assembly and down Rustaveli Boulevard toward the opera house, according to a report by Reuters. At least 10 employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and 32 police officers were reportedly injured during the confrontation with the protestors, the Black Sea nation’s interior ministry said.

As per the Interior Ministry, 107 people were detained for “disobedience to lawful police orders and petty hooliganism.”

“Throughout the night… protesters threw various objects, including stones, pyrotechnics, glass bottles, and metal items, at law enforcement officers,” it said.

Unrest In Girogia

Georgia has been rocked by turmoil since the ruling Georgian Dream party claimed victory in the October 26 parliamentary election that the pro-EU opposition said was fraudulent. The party has ruled Georgia since 2012 and is often accused by critics of trying to move the country closer to Russia and away from the EU. Ahead of October’s elections, it pushed through legislation targeting independent civil society and curbing LGBTQ rights, drawing warnings from Brussels.

After the party claimed victory in last month’s election, Opposition lawmakers have questioned the results of the election. Alleging fraud, they boycotted the new parliament.

Following this, the country’s President Salome Zourabishvili, who is reportedly at loggerheads with the governing party – called the one-party parliament “unconstitutional”. She sought to annul the election results through the country’s constitutional court.

The European Parliament on Thursday backed a resolution calling last month’s election as the latest stage in Georgia’s “worsening democratic crisis” and saying that the ruling party was “fully responsible”, according to a report by BBC.

The resolution also expressed concern about reports of vote manipulation and buying, voter intimidation and harassment of observers.

Following the resolution, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said his government had “decided not to bring up the issue of joining the European Union on the agenda until the end of 2028”.

He said Georgia would continue to implement the reforms required for accession and that it still planned to join by 2030, but added that it was “crucial for the EU to respect our national interests and traditional values”.

Georgia has the official EU candidate status since 2023. However, according to the BBC report, Belgium had halted Georgia’s accession process earlier this year over the country’s “Russia-style law” targeting organizations accused of “pursuing the interests of a foreign power”

Latest Protest

European Union accession is a popular issue in Georgia, and freezing of application talks has been met with widespread anger from people, who aim to see EU membership written into their constitution. Thousands massed outside the parliament building in Tbilisi on Thursday before they were dispersed by riot police using water cannons and gas.

The protesters returned on Friday and Saturday and were faced with violent suppression of resistance by the government. Independent TV station Pirveli said one of its journalists covering the protest was hospitalised with serious injuries after police beat her and a cameraman.

Pro-Western President Zurabishvili has also put her weight behind the protestors. In a televised address to the nation, she said: “The resistance movement has begun… I stand in solidarity with it.

“We will remain united until Georgia achieves its goals: to return to its European path, secure new elections.”

On Friday, hundreds of serving employees of the country’s foreign, defence, education and justice ministries signed open letters denouncing the freeze in talks as unconstitutional.

A string of private universities have said they are suspending studies amid the unrest, while business groups have called for the government to review its stance.

Worsening Relations With The EU

Georgia’s move to halt membership talks caps months of deteriorating relations between Tbilisi and the West, which has accused the Georgian Dream government of authoritarian and pro-Russian inclinations.

Georgian Dream has this year passed laws against so-called “foreign agents” and LGBT rights, which critics say are draconian in nature and Russian in inspiration.

The party, which is widely seen as controlled by its founder, billionaire and former prime minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, says it wants eventually to join the EU, and that the laws it has passed are necessary to defend Georgia’s traditional values.

The EU’s ambassador to Georgia described Georgian Dream’s stance as “heartbreaking” on Friday and condemned the crackdown on protesters.
