Hyderabad: England’s ultra-aggressive style of cricket in Tests will be put to a serious test when a formidable India take on the visitors in the first Test, beginning from Thursday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.

The new brand of fearlessness and counter-attacking cricket – the Bazball – has yielded good results for the Ben Stokes’ side in the recent past and has become the focal point of Test cricket. But they will face a tough challenge in sub-continental conditions where they will be up against rank turners, posing serious threat to their approach.

In addition, India have been near-invincible in home conditions. They haven’t lost a series since 2012 at home, notching up 16 series wins including seven series-sweeps, showcasing their dominance at home. Incidentally, it was the touring England team that won a series against India way back in 2012.

India are once again set to dominate with a strong all-round squad. Though they will be missing Virat Kohli, who chose to skip the first two Tests owing to personal reasons, India have enough talent to replace the talismanic batter. The crowd in Hyderabad, which is hosting a Test match after a gap of five years, will surely miss the superstar of Indian cricket.

In Shreyas Iyer, they have an able cricketer who can replace Kohli at number 4 while Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubamn Gill at No.3 gives a solid look to the Indian top order. With KL Rahul, wicketkeeper KS Bharat, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin to follow, the English bowlers have a tough job at hand.

However, the strength of India lies in their spin department. With Ashwin and Jadeja set to figure in the playing XI, the third-spinner spot will be a toss-up between Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav.

“It is a good headache to have quality spinners. Axar, with his all-round performance and good show, provides a great option. On the other hand, Kuldeep has evolved as a bowler and his variety on these kinds of pitches present a case for himself,” said Rohit Sharma on the eve of the match.

Meanwhile, anticipating a rank turner, England have announced their playing XI omitting their veteran pacer James Anderson. With Mark Wood as their only pacer, the Three Lions have named three spinners – Jack Leach, Rehan Ahmed and debutant Tom Hartley. Barring Leach and Anderson, none of them have any experience of playing in Indian conditions. While their inexperienced bowling attack is a worrying factor for the visitors, their fortunes will cling to the performances of their key batters Joe Root, Stokes.

The last Test in Hyderabad between India and West Indies in 2018 lasted only three days and cricket fans craving for Test cricket will have a treat on offer with both quality sides in action. But will it be just another short affair or will go till the last day will depend on the pitch that is on offer.

Ahead of India vs England clash, look at test records at Hyderabad Stadium

Hyderabad: As the highly anticipated India vs England Test Series approaches, cricket fans are in for an exciting showdown set to unfold over the next six weeks with five Test matches. With the first Test match slated to commence at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi Stadium on January 25, let’s take a closer look at the venue’s Test records:

Having hosted a total of five Test matches from 2010 to 2018, India faced New Zealand and West Indies twice each, along with one match each against Australia and Bangladesh.

While the first Test against New Zealand in 2010 ended in a draw, the country claimed a resounding victory in the second match in 2012, winning by an innings and 115 runs. Further, the stadium has seen impressive wins against Australia, Bangladesh, and West Indies, solidifying India’s dominance on home soil.

Going by the official records on the Hyderabad Cricket Association website, the average first-inning score at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium stands at 405. Despite this, both teams batting first and second have secured victories in two matches each. Winning the toss appears to be a crucial advantage, as 66.66 per cent of teams that emerged victorious have won the toss.

The Stadium marked a pivotal moment in 2017 when India notched up their highest score of 687/6 against Bangladesh. Conversely, the lowest total at the venue was registered by the West Indies in 2018, with a score of 127/10 against India. In 2018, a notable achievement took place when the nation effortlessly chased down a target of 72 runs with all ten wickets intact and in 2017, successfully defended their score of 458 against Bangladesh.

As Rohit Shrama-led India team prepares to defend its impressive record of not suffering defeat in a Test series on home grounds for the past 12 years, the spotlight is on Ben Stokes-led England, the last team to emerge victorious against India on their home soil in 2012. The five-match Test series is expected to conclude on March 7 after matches at various venues— Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, Ranchi, and Dharamsala.

Meanwhile, last week, Patidar appeared for India A and scored 151 against the England Lions in Ahmedabad. The right-handed batter is currently in his top form which would help the hosts in the upcoming Test series against England.

Shastri, Engineer honoured with Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award

Hyderabad: Former India captain and head coach Ravi Shastri said on Tuesday that it was a touching moment for him to get bestowed with the Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award. In a glittering ceremony here, the BCCI awarded a host of top men’s and women’s performers from the 2019-20 season.

Former India wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer too was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Shastri was part of India’s World Cup winning squad in 1983 and was the Player of the Series when they bagged the World Series in 1985. Later as a coach, Shastri masterminded India’s back-to-back Test series wins in Australia, the first Asian side to achieve the feat.

Shastri said it was an emotional moment for him. “It certainly is (an emotional moment). Ladies and gentleman thanks for coming and I thank the BCCI for bestowing this honour on me. It’s four decades in the game, you have not missed a beat and you have been involved with Indian cricket right through. “It is a very touching moment for me because when I started my cricket at the age of 17 and I finished at 31 as a player, 30 in fact, BCCI was my guardian right through. “They showed me the path to play the sport. You know when the bucks were not big in the game as Farokh (Engineer), had mentioned. But there was pride in playing for your country.”

Shastri said the board’s growth as an influential sporting entity has benefitted generation of players.

“I saw the BCCI growing up in the 40 years of mine, you know, powerhouse in world cricket and because of that you can see generations after generations of players benefitting. So, for me this is very special evening with the women’s team, the men’s cricket team there. “You have got the coaching staff from England and here are people who have been with me right through those 40 years – either as administrators, or players or broadcasters or production people around the ground when we play the game or watch the game or commentate on the game. “So, it is a very special evening. Touching,” said Shastri after receiving the award.
