Pant ‘very confident’ for every IPL 2024 game: Ponting

New Delhi: Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting said wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is ‘very confident’ of playing every game in IPL 2024, but added that he’s still unsure of him to captain the side or be the keeper.

Pant, 26, miraculously survived a near-fatal car crash while on the way to his hometown Roorkee on December 30, 2022. He was then airlifted to Mumbai on January 4, 2023, for surgery and further recovery.

Since then, the left-handed wicketkeeper-batter has been doing extensive rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Pant has been making remarkable progress in his recovery, with him being fit for IPL 2024 looking as a realistic possibility for making a return to competitive cricket.

“Rishabh is very confident that he’s going to be right to play. In what capacity we’re not quite sure yet. You would have seen all the social-media stuff, he’s up and about and running well. But in saying that we’re only six weeks away from the first game as well. So we’re not sure if we’ll get wicketkeeping out of him this year.

“But I’ll guarantee if I asked him now he’ll say, ‘I’m playing every game, I’m keeping every game and I’m batting at No.4.’ That’s just what he’s like, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed. He’s such a dynamic player. He’s obviously our captain. We missed him incredibly last year,” said Ponting in Melbourne to reporters after being named as head coach of Washington Freedom for the second season of the Major League Cricket (MLC) competition in the USA.

On a sensible note, Ponting said if Pant plays as many matches as possible in IPL 2024, it will be a bonus for the Capitals. “If you understand the journey he’s been on the last 12-13 months, it was a horrific incident. One that I know he feels very lucky to have even survived, let alone have the chance to play cricket again.

“We’ll just keep our fingers crossed and hope that he can be out there and play. Even if it’s not all the games, if we can manage him through 10 of the 14 games or whatever that might be then whatever games you can get out of him will be a bonus.”

IPL 2024 is likely to start from last week of March and the Capitals are keen to put in a better performance after finishing at ninth place last season. The IPL 2020 runners-up had just two wins at their home ground, the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, last year, where their batting failed to click as a unit.

“Our batting was disappointing last year. A lot of the guys that we felt would be able to handle difficult conditions in Delhi, a spinning wicket a lot of the time, we weren’t good enough in those conditions. We’ve got some challenges with our home venue to be honest. We rock up every game, we’re not really sure exactly what sort of wicket we’re going to get.”

“So you’d go to the auction expecting you’re going to get one (type) of surface and you rock up for five games, seven games there and you get five different pitches so that does make it hard. But we definitely lacked on batting quality last year, which is what we’ve tried to really improve on this year.”

“We’ve gone to the well with a couple of really highly talented young Indian players that we think that are ready to play straight away. That’s the thing about the IPL, it’s one year to the big auction so it’s not like you can really invest too much in these young blokes and hope to improve them overnight. You’ve got to get the best talent out there that you think’s ready to play. And we’ve got a few of those this year,” concluded Ponting.

New Zealand tops WTC25 standings with 281-run win

Mount Maunganui: New Zealand have moved to the top of the ICC World Test Championships (WTC) standings with a comprehensive 281-run victory over South Africa on Wednesday.

Inaugural WTC champions dominated the contest at Bay oval to cruise to victory late on the fourth day and in the process moved ahead of Australia and India, and now sit top of the current standings with a 66.66 percent points percentage, ICC reports.

During this current WTC cycle, New Zealand has played only three Tests. Their series in Bangladesh ended in a 1-1 draw towards the end of last year, and they secured a victory over South Africa in the first Test at home that propelled the 2021 champions to the top of the standings.

Last year’s champions Australia dropped to second following the result at Bay Oval, with India falling to third and South Africa plunging back to seventh and below fourth-placed Bangladesh, Pakistan in fifth and the West Indies in sixth.

Riding on double century from Rachin Ravindra and a pair of tons from Kane Williamson saw New Zealand dominate the match with the bat, while pacer Kyle Jamieson and spinner Mitchell Santner each collected six wickets for the match against a disappointing South Africa outfit.

The teams will be back in action when the second Test gets underway in Hamilton from February 13.

Can see so much of Shai Hope in his coil, bat swing: Ashwin praises U19 batter Sachin Dhas

New Delhi: Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Tuesday lauded Indian U19 batter Sachin Dhas for his knock, saying that the batter’s “coil and bat swing” reminds of West Indies star batter Shai Hope.

The Indian U19s survived a top-order collapse and rode on masterful knocks from skipper Uday Saharan and Sachin Dhas to reach the final of the showpiece event with a nervy two-wicket win over South Africa at Benoni on Tuesday.

Ashwin took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote: “Can see so much of Shai Hope in Sachin Dhas’s coil and bat swing. Wonderful composure and poise to this partnership between Sachin and Uday .

Hope, the current West Indies ODI skipper has played for WI across all formats, having scored 7,396 runs in 188 international games with 18 centuries and 32 fifties.

In the ODIs, he is a modern-era great for his team, having scored 5,177 runs in 124 matches at an average of 50.26. He has scored 16 tons and 25 fifties in 119 innings. His best score is 170. Sachin is the third-highest run-getter in the tournament so far, scoring 294 runs in six matches at an average of 73.50, with a century and a fifty. His best score is 116.

Coming to the match, India put the South Africa U19 team to bat first. Lhuan-dre Pretorius (76 in 102 balls, with six fours and three sixes) and Richard Seletswane (64 in 100 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes) hit crucial half-centuries. South Africa made 244/7 in 50 overs. Raj Limbani (3/60) was the pick of the bowlers for India. Musheer Khan (2/43), Saumy Pandey (1/38) and Naman Tiwari (1/52) also were among the wickets for India. In the chase of 245 runs, India was reduced to 32/4.

But Sachin Dhas (96 in 95 balls, with 11 fours and a six) and skipper Uday Saharan (81 in 124 balls, with six fours) helped India back in the game with a brilliant 172-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Though India lost three wickets towards the end, Limbani (13*) kept his nerves and won India the game, securing them another final. Kwena Maphanka (3/32) and Tristan Luus (3/37) were the pick of the bowlers for Proteas. Saharan was given the ‘Player of the Match’ for his calm and composed half-century.

Ben Stokes has struggled to pick up Jasprit Bumrah’s pace, reckons Michael Atherton

Visakhapatnam: Former England captain Michael Atherton reckons incumbent skipper Ben Stokes has struggled to pick up the pace off Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the ongoing five-Test series.

Stokes has been dismissed twice in four innings of the two Tests so far by Bumrah, who has cleaned up the southpaw on both instances.

“Picking with the speed of the ball is tough with him (Bumrah), and I’ve noticed with Stokes, even Stokes is an excellent player of fast bowling. He’s hurried with Bumrah,” Atherton was quoted as saying by Sky Cricket.

“He struggles to pick up the pace and a couple of times when he’s (Bumrah) got him, it looks as though the ball has kept low, which has, but it also almost beaten him for pace as well. I think that’s the issue with Bumrah.” Bumrah, who has snaffled 15 wickets in the first two Tests, returned 6/45 in the first innings of the second Test and among the highlights was his yorker to Ollie Pope, on which Atherton admitted that there was hardly anything that the batter could have done about it.

“It was spectacular (yorker) wasn’t it? I don’t see what Pope could’ve done with that. It was an unbelievable image as Pope walked back,” he added.

India won the second Test by 106 runs to draw level in the series 1-1.

The third Test will be played at Rajkot from February 15.

ICC U19 WC: Masterful hands from Dhas, Saharan help India pip SA, reach final

Benoni: In, perhaps, a lesson for the senior side, which has often come up short in the business end of ICC events after bossing the group stages, the Indian U19s survived a top-order collapse and rode on masterful knocks from skipper Uday Saharan and Sachin Dhas to reach the final of the showpiece event with a nervy two-wicket win over South Africa at Benoni on Tuesday.

After being reduced to 32/4 in the face of hostile opening bursts from the South African quicks, Saharan and Dhas came together and steered the Indian innings with a match-turning 172-run partnership.

India will now take on the winner of the second semi-final between Australia and Pakistan in the title clash on February 11.

Chasing a modest target of 245 runs, the five-time world champions got off to a terrible start losing opener Adarsh Singh off the very first ball.

Star batter Musheer Khan, who came into this match on the back of two centuries and fifty in the tournament, was also dismissed by Tristan Luus, with India reduced to 8/2 in 3.2 overs.

Luus continued his dominance over the Indian top order, removing Arshin Kulkarni (12) and Priyanshu Moliya (5). India sunk further to 32/4 in 11.2 overs and their scoring was stifled by a disciplined and hostile South African new-ball attack.

Skipper Saharan and Sachin Dhas started the rebuilding phase for India, taking the team to the 50-run mark in 17.2 overs.

Dhas released some pressure by smashing Riley Norton for three fours in the 19th over. Dhas and Saharan completed their 50-run stand in 65 balls.

With the help of a wide, India reached the 100-run mark in 24.3 overs.

With a fine boundary through the mid-wicket, Dhas reached his half-century in 47 balls, smashing nine fours towards the landmark.

India reached the 150-run mark in 33.3 overs.

With the help of a boundary by Saharan, India reached the 200-run mark in 40.4 overs, nearing a win.

The 172-run partnership for the fifth wicket finally ended with Maphanka removing Dhas for 96 off 95 balls, with 11 fours and a six. India was 203/5 in 42.1 overs.

India needed just 28 runs in their final five overs. However, Aravelly Avanish was removed by Maphanka for 10, who got his third wicket. Murugan Abhishek was also run out for nought, bringing India to 227/7 in 47.2 overs, with everything in the hands of skipper Saharan.

Raj Limbani released all the pressure with a gigantic six, leaving India with nine to get in the final two overs.

With just one run needed, skipper Saharan was run out for 81 in 124 balls, with six fours. India managed to chase down the total, with seven balls left.

Maphanka (3/32) and Luus (3/37) made India sweat and toil hard initially, but the five-time champions managed to turn the tide and secure another final.

Earlier, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Richard Seletswane’s fighting knocks and a late 23-run cameo from Tristan Luus propelled South Africa to 244/7 against India in the mouthwatering semifinal clash of the ongoing Under 19 World Cup 2024 in Benoni.

Pretorius scored the highest for the hosts with 76 runs off 102 while Seletswane played a stunning knock of 64 runs in 100 deliveries. Tristan Luus played a good cameo at the end to provide the final flourish.

For India, Raj Limbani was the chief destructor claiming a three-wicket haul while Musheer Khan bagged two.

India skipper Uday Saharan won the toss and elected to bowl first. This was the first time India elected to bowl after winning the toss in the tournament.

Raj Limbani struck first removing dangerous Steve Stolk. During Stolk’s brief stay, the hitter smashed two fours and a six, but he went for a wide one and nicked it behind the stumps. Lhuan-dre Pretorius, South Africa’s other opener, reacted to the setback by hitting a flurry of boundaries. Despite losing David Teeger (0) to a stunning inswinger from Limbani, the Proteas were up 55/2 at the end of the first Powerplay.

Following that, India’s bowlers were able to keep the scoring pace low. Merely 63 runs came between overs 11-30. The pressure finally got to Pretorius, who tried to hoick Musheer Khan over mid-wicket but was held at short mid-wicket. Abhishek Murugan took an exceptional catch, holding on to a ball racing past him with both hands.

Richard Seletswane and Oliver Whitehead attempted to increase the scoring pace with various aggressive strokes, but Saharan stayed with his spinners. This yielded Oliver Whitehead’s wicket in the 40th over.

Seletswane also brought up his fifty in 90 balls before losing his wicket to Naman Tiwari. Seletswane turned his fortunes around as he smoked back-to-back boundaries for the hosts.Seletswane was joined by skipper Juan James in the 43rd over. The South Africa innings picked pace under their guidance, and the team became the first side to cross 200 against India in the tournament.

Naman Tiwari and Limbani struck late in the death overs, but a late blistering cameo of 23 runs by Tristan Luus helped Proteas post a total of 244/7 against unbeaten India for a spot in the final. South Africa batters posted 244, scoring 81 in the last 10 overs.

Virat is one of the greatest players of the game, we are prepared for him, says Brendon McCullum

New Delhi: England’s head coach Brendon McCullum has emphasized his team’s readiness to face a potential return of Indian cricketing stalwart Virat Kohli in the upcoming matches. With the series delicately poised at 1-1 after India’s resounding victory in Visakhapatnam, the anticipation surrounding Kohli’s potential comeback looms large.

Kohli’s absence from the first two Tests due to personal reasons left a noticeable void in the Indian lineup. However, amidst the uncertainty, England’s resilience shone through as they capitalised on the opportunities presented, with Ben Stokes leading the charge in the series opener in Hyderabad.

“Virat’s one of the greatest players of the game has seen. No doubt it improves this squad. As we have said throughout, the depth of Indian cricket, and the talent in India is immense. So, we respect every opposition player that we come up against,” Brendon McCullum told TalkSport.

McCullum expressed respect for Kohli’s prowess and competitiveness, underscoring the challenge his presence poses to the English side.

“If Virat is coming back…we hope everything is well with his family. We look forward to that challenge too. He is a great competitor. I know him very well and I enjoyed playing against him, I enjoyed our team playing against him. And if you have success against the best, I am sure you have earned it,” he added.

Previously on Monday, India’s head coach Rahul Dravid provided an update regarding Virat Kohli’s potential return to the squad for the three remaining Test matches against England, stating, best to ask the selectors.

“I think it’s best to ask the selectors. I am sure they are the best people to answer ahead of the team selection for the next three Tests. We will get to that. I am sure there will be a selection over the next few days. We will connect with him and find out,” Rahul Dravid said at the post-match press conference.

After losing the second Test by 106 runs, the England cricket team travelled to Abu Dhabi for 10 days of training for the third Test starting from Feb 15.
