IPL 2025 Auction: Pant, Rahul, Iyer to push the bar high in Jeddah on opening day

New Delhi: One of the gala events of the cricketing world – the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction – will take centre stage in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

With months of off-field strategy and rigorous scouting, it will all come down to pure business as 10 franchises would look to get the best possible squads for the 2025 season and beyond.

In all, 577 players including 367 Indians and 210 overseas will be testing their fate to fill the maximum of 204 slots (70 overseas) available for the upcoming season. Among Indian players, 48 are capped and the remaining are uncapped professionals while 197 capped overseas and 12 uncapped foreign players will be up for grabs.

This year, three players from Associate nations will also test their luck. The auction proceedings will kick off with the first set of marquee players featuring the likes of Indian stars Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer – all three of them led their respective teams last season but were not retained by their respective franchises – with a base price of Rs 2 crore.

It is anticipated that Pant could be one of the most expensive players in the tournament’s history with Delhi Capitals having the advantage of using the right-to-match card (RTM). The other set of marquee players includes Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj.

At the same time, Mitchell Starc, who received the highest-ever bid at an IPL auction, Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, David Miller and Kagiso Rabada are the five overseas players across two sets of marquee lists.

A total of 82 players (after the addition of Jofra Archer) have marked themselves under the top price bracket of Rs 2 crore and will hope to make the headline in the two-day mega event.

Among others, 27 players are in the Rs 1.5 crore, 18 in Rs 1.25 crore, 23 in Rs 1 crore, 92 in Rs 75 lakh, eight in Rs 50 lakh, five in Rs 40 lakh and 320 are in with Rs 30 lakh price tag After bringing down the curtain to his glorious red-ball career nearly three weeks before turning 42, England veteran pacer James Anderson took everyone by surprise as he registered himself at a base price of Rs 1.25 crore in search of his first-ever IPL franchise.

In contrast, Bihar’s 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi will head into the auction as the youngest player for this edition. The southpaw has played five first-class matches for his state and two Youth Test matches for India Under-19s, scoring a century against Australia Under-19s last month.

Among the uncapped Indian players, all eyes will be on Ashutosh Sharma, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Vaibhav Arora and Mahipal Lomror. Ashutosh and Mahipal impressed with their attacking stroke-making for Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru last year with the former having the advantage of bowling left-arm spin.

Delhi batter Angkrish has a solid chance to get a contract for the second consecutive season after showing a glimpse of his talent for title-winner Kolkata Knight Riders. At just 19, the top-order batter has the potential to further nurture his skills by sharing a dressing room with international stars and become a vital member of the franchise.

Angkrish’s former KKR teammate Vaibhav Arora is another such candidate to fly high in the auction after a stellar season including 11 wickets in 10 matches. He proved himself as a reliable pace-bowling option in the powerplay by hitting the hard-lengths with the new ball.

He is likely to be one of the hottest picks among franchises looking to add a domestic pacer to the squad. Slots and purse available for each franchise: Punjab Kings will have the maximum purse of Rs 110.5 crore to fill 23 spots in their squad after another disastrous season for the franchise.

Chennai Super Kings (Rs 55 crore), Gujarat Titans (Rs 69 crore), Lucknow Super Giants (Rs 69 crore), Mumbai Indians (Rs 45 crore) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (Rs 45 crore) will each have a maximum of 20 spots available to complete their squads.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Rs 83 crore) and Delhi Capitals (Rs 73 crore) will eye to add 22 and 21 players to their portfolios while Kolkata Knight Riders (Rs 51 crore) and Rajasthan Royals (Rs 41 crore) will have 19 slots available to frame their squads.

‘Take it down immediately’: Sunil Gavaskar warns of legal action over fake article

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar

New Delhi: Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has strongly denied writing an article attributed to him on a cricket website and has threatened legal action against those responsible.

The website, Cricket Ception, published a column on Friday evening titled “A New Era in Leadership: Bumrah’s Captaincy and Kohli’s Leadership Revive Team India,” falsely claiming it was written by the former captain.

Gavaskar addressed the issue on Instagram on Saturday, sharing a video where he clarified that he had no connection with the article and demanded its immediate removal.

The cricket legend also asked the website to issue a public apology, warning that failure to comply would lead to legal action.

In the video, Gavaskar stated: “Hi, this is Sunil Gavaskar, and I want to say that there is a website, Cricket Ception, which has printed an article under my name. I have to say that it is completely fake. I have not contributed that at all, and I want to tell that website to take it down immediately. Issue an apology. If you don’t do that, I will give the matter to my legal team. So don’t believe a word of what you’ve read. This is a completely fake article attributed to me.”

Gavaskar also urged fans to be cautious about misinformation online, writing, “Never believe everything you see on the Internet #alwaysverify” in the caption of his Instagram post.

The controversy arose during the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at Perth Stadium, where India delivered a dominant performance under stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah.

Leading from the front, Bumrah picked a dazzling 5-30 as India stretched their to over 100 at tea on day two of the first Test after bowling out Australia for 104. It was also the third-lowest score for Australia in Tests at home since 2000.

Jaiswal, Rahul power India’s stunning turnaround, lead by 218 runs at Perth Test

After the heavy roller was used before play on Day 2 and again after Australia’s first innings ended at 104, India gained a useful 46-run lead, which helped ease the pitch under the scorching sun. This made batting easier for Jaiswal and Rahul, who finished Day 2 unbeaten on 90 and 62, respectively. The pair have put India in a strong position, with their second innings total standing at 172/0 after 57 overs.

Jaiswal, Rahul power India’s stunning turnaround, lead by 218 runs at Perth Test

Perth: After a fast-moving opening day where 17 wickets fell in 76.4 overs, many expected for day two of the first Test to follow the same route. But with the pitch flattening out, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul led India’s stunning turnaround to end day two with a 218-run lead at the Perth Stadium on Saturday.

With the heavy roller used before day two’s play began and once after Australia’s first innings ended on 104, as India grabbed a handy 46-run lead, it meant the pitch eased out under the baking sun. That made life easy for Jaiswal and Rahul, who ended Day 2 not out on 90 and 62 respectively, as the duo have now put India into a potential winning position, with their second innings score standing at 172/0 in 57 overs.

Jaiswal, playing his first Test in Australia, came off a duck in the first innings, but showed balanced composure and aggression to be in complete control of hitting seven fours and two sixes. On the other hand, Rahul was calmness and solidity personified to hit four boundaries as he and Jaiswal batted two whole sessions unscathed for India to dominate day two’s play, where just three wickets fell in 81.2 overs.

In the final session, Australia grew tiresome – Pat Cummins resorted to a brief short-ball ploy, while Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood beat the bat relentlessly and bowled some unplayable deliveries. Some overs were given to Nathan Lyon, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh and Marnus Labuschagne, but none could separate Jaiswal and Rahul, who amassed 22 runs in the first 17 overs of the session.

There was luck on India’s side – Jaiswal hit a drive away from his body off Starc, but Usman Khawaja couldn’t get low enough in time to take the chance at first slip. In the next over, Rahul was sent back by Jaiswal after coming halfway down the pitch, and was back to his crease in time, thus avoiding a run-out.

Amidst this, Jaiswal got to his ninth fifteen Test cricket with a drive to sweeper cover off Lyon, and then proceeded to hammer Marsh through point for four and flick Starc for a beautifully-timed six. Rahul drove Starc’s half-volley through point for four, before raising his bat for a solid fifty in 124 balls.

After scything Cummins through the gap between second and third slip for four, Jaiswal danced down the pitch to dispatch Lyon for a massive six over long-on, which became his 34th maximum hit by him in Tests in 2024, surpassing Brendon McCullum’s record for 33 sixes in 2014 to become the batter with most sixes in a calender year in the format, as he and Rahul ensured India ended the day in a commanding position, while Australia have their backs against a defiant duo and would need more than anything special to make a comeback on day three.

Brief Scores: India 150/10 and 172/0 in 57 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 90 not out, KL Rahul 62 not out) lead Australia 104/10 in 51.2 overs (Mitchell Starc 26, Alex Carey 21; Jasprit Bumrah 5-30, Harshit Rana 3-48) by 218 runs

Perth: Young gun Yashasvi Jaiswal proved his mettle once again and established his status as the next big batting superstar with a superb hundred on his maiden appearance on Australian soil as India extended their overall lead to 321 at lunch on the third day of the opening Test here on Sunday. At the break, India reached 275 for 1 in their second innings despite losing KL Rahul‘s (77) wicket.

Exactly 32 years ago, 17-year-old Sachin Tendulkar became a global phenomenon with a hundred for the ages at the old WACA ground on a track that had those snake-like cracks and in the last two days, Jaiswal (141 batting, 264 balls) has shown the entire world that he is here to be the torch-bearer of Indian batting for the next decade and a half.

The 22-year-old has hit 12 fours and three sixes and currently has Devdutt Padikkal (25 not out) for company. And just like Sunil Gavaskar and Tendulkar, the latest batting sensation from ‘Mumbai School of Batsmanship’ is showing his voracious appetite for runs, slowly striding towards another ‘Daddy Hundreds’.

Jaiswal completed his fourth Test hundred and first in a SENA country with a beautifully executed ramp shot off a bouncer bowled by Josh Hazlewood (0/23 in 16 overs). The celebration was one for the keeps with hands in the air and gratitude for the almighty before showing his lean but muscular biceps.

The six also ensured that Jaiswal and KL Rahul’s opening pair surpassed the previous record stand of 191 set by Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth way back in Sydney in 1986. Rahul, who played one of his most compact defensive innings on the second day, was more intent on scoring some quick runs with the Kookaburra ball being 60 plus overs old and hardly doing anything off the pitch which had flattened considerably.

A few overpitched deliveries from Mitchell Starc did fetch him some runs but a hundred that was there for the taking didn’t come though. Once they became the first opening pair to add 200 runs, Rahul got one from Starc angled in and the nick was taken low by Alex Carey.

Devdutt Padikkal knew that best chance to get some confidence was score a few runs before the second new ball was taken. He had an extremely confident Jaiswal at the other end, who smashed Nathan Lyon’s delivery pitched on the rough through the off-side. Jaiswal hit a gorgeous off-drive off Starc once the second new ball was taken.

Jaiswal-Padikkal duo added 74 runs for the second wicket in decent time.

Djokovic hires old rival Andy Murray as new coach, hopes to win 11th Australian Open title

London: After fighting many pitched battles with him for nearly a decade, former World No.1 Novak Djokovic has appointed his one-time rival Andy Murray as his coach for the 2025 season’s first Grand Slam in Australia.

The 37-year-old Djokovic of Serbia took to social media on Saturday to announce that longtime friend and rival Andy Murray will be his new coach starting from the next Australian Open in Melbourne. Murray retired from professional tennis earlier this year at the Paris Olympics.

Born one week apart in May 1987, both climbed to the top of the ATP Rankings and battled on the world’s biggest stages. Djokovic and Murray clashed in 36 ATP head-to-head showdowns, with the former winning 25 of them. They met in 19 finals, including the championship match at seven majors and the 2016 ATP Finals. They most recently played in the 2017 Doha final.

Announcing their partnership in a video message on his social media channel, Djokovic said, “We had some of the most epic battles in our sport. They called us game-changers, risk-takers, and history-makers. I thought our story might be over. It turns out it has one final chapter. It’s time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner. Welcome aboard the coach, Andy Murray.”

“I’m excited to have one of my greatest rivals in my team, on the same side of the net, this time as my coach,” Djokovic said per his official website. I’m looking forward to starting the season together with Andy and having him by my side in Melbourne, where we’ve shared many extraordinary moments throughout our careers,” Djokovic said.

Murray too was excited about the partnership. “I’ll be joining Novak’s team during the preparation period, helping him get in the best possible shape for the Australian Open,” Murray said. “I’m very excited about it and I am looking forward to being on the same side of the net for a change. I’m also grateful for the opportunity to assist him in achieving his goals for the coming year.”

In 2024 Djokovic recorded a 37-9 match record according to Infosys ATP Stats. In January he will attempt to win an 11th Australian Open title to reach 100 career titles.

Djokovic is the most successful tennis player in the Open Era, having won a record 24 Grand Slam titles, while the 37-year-old Murray won three Grand Slam titles, including the Wimbledon titles in 2013 and 2016. Both of them along with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were part of tennis’s Fab Four for many years.

Four wickets fell in an eventful second session but Kohli and Washington Sundar (14) remained firm during the breaks as India looked in commanding position.
