Working hard on my skills and focussed on being consistent: Prasidh Krishna

New Delhi: Injured Indian fast bowler Prasidh Krishna has been on the mend from his quadriceps injury sustained during India’s tour of South Africa and the Bengaluru man said that his singular endavour now is to improve his consistency and increase his skill-set moving forward.

Prasidh was handed a debut during India’s two-Test series in South Africa and looked completely out of sync in red ball cricket before being ruled out of the ongoing England series. He is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy.

“I am working on my skills on being consistent and doing better for the side,” Prasidh told PTI on sidelines of a promotional event.

Asked what are the areas he would be working on as he already is naturally quick and gets disconcerting bounce off the track, he replied: “Pace is one of those things I will be working on. With confidence and rhythm, all of those (pace) things increase. But then what we need is to bowl in a particular way consistently and stick to the tactics of the team. That’s more important.” The competition to get a senior national team breakthrough is immense and it only helps an individual to grow as a player.

“Every time someone gets into the team you know he has gone through the grind, through the hard competition and all of that and you are getting the best of the crop. So I think it is great for all individual athletes to fight the competition there is and get a place in the team.”

New Delhi: India’s batting talisman Virat Kohli is set to miss the third and fourth Test matches against England in Rajkot and Ranchi, according to a report from ESPNcricinfo.

The former India skipper also stays doubtful for the final match of the series against England in Dharamshala, the report said.

Kohli had earlier withdrawn from the first two Tests against England due to personal reasons.

“Virat Kohli has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to be withdrawn from the first two Tests of the upcoming Test series against England, citing personal reasons,” BCCI said had said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the cricket’s top governing body in the country requested the media and fans to respect Kohli’s privacy during this time.

“The BCCI requests the media and fans to respect Virat Kohli’s privacy during this time and refrain from speculating on the nature of his personal reasons. The focus should remain on supporting the Indian cricket team as they embark on the upcoming challenges in the Test series.” Right-handed batter Rajat Patidar was called up to replace Virat Kohli in India’s first two Test matches against England. Patidar made his international debut on December 21 last year against South Africa in the 3rd ODI match, where he opened for the ‘Men in Blue’ and scored 22 runs from 16 balls with a strike rate of 137.50.

India lost the first Test by 28 runs and won the second by 106 runs in the five-match series.

Virat was last in action during the T20I series against Afghanistan last month, in which he scored a quickfire 29 and a golden duck in two matches he played.

Rajkot: The Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) stadium in Rajkot will be re-named as the Niranjan Shah Stadium ahead of the third India-England Test, which is starting on February 15.

SCA said in a statement that Jay Shah, the current Honorary Secretary of the BCCI, will be inaugurating the new name of the stadium on February 14, on the eve of the third India-England Test. The stadium, located in Khanderi, on the outskirts of Rajkot, is going to be renamed after Shah, who played 12 first-class matches for Saurashtra from 1965/66 – 1974/75.

He later on dabbled in cricket administration and also served as the Honorary Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), apart from being the SCA Secretary for close to four decades. His son, former Saurashtra cricketer Jaydev Shah, is the current president of SCA. Jaydev played 120 first-class games, 54 List A and 33 T20s for Saurashtra and even captained the side, before retiring from all forms of the game in 2018.

The current five-match Test series between India and England is locked at 1-1. While England won the opening Test in Hyderabad by 28 runs, India emerged victorious in the second game at Visakhapatnam by 106 runs. Both teams are on a long break, with England going back to its pre-series training base in Abu Dhabi.

India and England are expected to regroup in Rajkot a couple of days ahead of the third Test starting on February 15. The last time these two teams played a Test in Rajkot, it was in 2016, which was also the first Test at the venue, which ended in a draw. It will be followed by the next two matches in Ranchi and Dharamshala.

Dubai: Jasprit Bumrah on Wednesday became the first Indian pacer to top the ICC Test rankings after a stellar performance against England in Visakhapatnam.

The 30-year-old’s nine-wicket match haul has helped him leapfrog Pat Cummins, Kagiso Rabada and Ravichandran Ashwin, making him only the fourth from his country to attain number one position.

Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Bishan Singh Bedi are the other Indians who have been at the top of the charts. Bumrah, who was named Player of the Match after helping India level the five-match series with a 106-run victory, ended Ashwin’s 11-month long reign. Ashwin, on 499 Test wickets, is now third in the standings.

Bumrah now has 881 rating points with Ashwin (904) and Jadeja (899) the only India bowlers to have aggregated more rating points. Ashwin and Jadeja also have the unique distinction of being jointly top-ranked in March 2017.

The batting rankings see left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal progress 37 places to 29th after completing a fine double-century in the first innings and Shubman Gill go up 14 places to a career-best 38th after notching a century in the second innings.

England opener Zak Crawley is another player to gain after the Visakhapatnam Test, moving up eight places to a career-best 22nd position after scores of 76 and 73.

Rookie leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed has moved up 14 places to 70th while Tom Hartley, who became just the second England player with at least 50 runs and five wickets in each of his first two Tests, has advanced in both lists – up from 103rd to 95th in the batting rankings and from 63rd to 53rd in the bowling rankings.

The latest rankings have also factored in performances in the one-off Test between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in Colombo. Left-arm spinner Prabhath Jayasuriya has moved up to three places to a career-best sixth position after his eight-wicket match haul helped the home side win by 10 wickets.

In the ODI rankings, Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa is up one place to third and fast bowler Sean Abbott’s six wickets in the three-match series against the West Indies this past week have lifted him 35 places to joint-33rd position.
