Dhaka: India were on Thursday declared joint winners of the SAFF Women’s Under-19 Football Championships with hosts Bangladesh though the visitors initially thought they have won the title through the toss of coins, in an unprecedented change of decision made by the match officials.

The match ended 1-1 after the regulation 90 minutes of play and direct penalty shootout was ordered by the referee. Interestingly, all the 11 players of both sides, including the goalkeepers, converted their penalty kicks. After the scoreline reached 11-11, the referee was about to continue the penalty shootout when she was told not to do that.

Suddenly, she called in the captains of the two sides and the toss of the coin was done. India were the lucky side to win the toss of coin and they celebrated. The Bangladeshis protested and their players refused to leave the field of play for a long time.

There was confusion and pandamonium all along and the sizeable crowd were seen throwing a few bottles onto the field and shouting slogans. After more than one hour, the match commissioner, who initially took the decision for tossing the coin, changed his decision and India and Bangladesh were declared joint winners.

“It was a good gesture from the All India Football Federation. We accepted the decision to declare both sides as joint winners,” an AIFF source told PTI. There was confusion on the part of the match officials regarding the tournament rules, which led to the unprecedented scenes.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad golfer Sneha Singh carded a 3-under 69 to extend her lead over arch-rival Hitaashee Bakshi to five shots after round two of the fourth leg of the Hero Women’s Pro Golf Tour, at Visakhapatnam on Thursday.

Sneha, winner of the Hero Order of Merit last season, registered a hat-trick of birdies on the backnine to recover from two bogeys. Sneha with 70-69 is now 5-under 139 and leads Hitaashee Bakshi (72-72) who had a par round for the second straight day.

Hitaashee is even par for two days as Sneha is the only player with under par rounds on both days. The day’s amateur star was Zara Anand (74-72), who with three birdies in last four holes rose to Tied third spot alongside Khushi Khanijau (72-74). They are both at 2-over 146.

Sneha, who started the day two shots ahead of Hitaashee, birdied the second and the third to get off to a flying start. A bogey on the fourth was repaired with a birdie on the ninth. On the back nine, Sneha seemed to have given away some ground with back-to-back bogeys on the 10th and the 11th.

Yet she fought back strongly with a birdie on the 12th and then three in a row from the 14th to the 16th. Despite closing with a bogey on the 18th she was three-under for the day and once again it was the only under par round of the day. Hitaashee had three birdies against three bogeys.

U-19 World Cup: Australia defeat Pakistan in tight semi-final contest, set up summit clash with India

Benoni: Oliver Peake, Harry Dixon’s fighting knocks and Raf MacMilllan’s heroics helped Australia overcome Pakistan in a nail-bitter semifinal clash by the barest of margins to book a place in the ICC Under 19 World Cup 2024 final against defending champions India.

Australia defeated Pakistan by one wicket after Ali Raza wreaked havoc on Aussie batters with his four-wicket haul. An interesting chase brewed up as Pakistan fought back on the back of Raza and Arafat Minhas.

However, Australia managed to prevail in the low-scoring 50-over match Harry Dixon and Sam Konstas helped Australia get off to a solid start in its chase of 180. The pair scored 33 runs in the opening Powerplay.

However, Ali Raza responded for Pakistan at the opening of the second Powerplay. He got one to nip back in and sent Konstas’ off-stump cartwheeling. Soon after, Pakistan got a fortuitous break in the 14th over when Hugh Weibgen smacked Naveed Khan’s full toss straight into the palms of Haroon Arshad at cover.

Wickets continued to fall, with Harjas Singh being run out in the 16th over due to a misunderstanding, and Ryan Hicks being bowled by Ubaid Shah in the next.

Dixon and Ollie Peake then worked together to recreate the Australian innings. Their steady progress was aided by good stroke play and Australia’s chase was soon back on track. Dixon completed his half-century in the 24th over. However, just as the game was swinging in Australia’s favour, Arafat Minhas bowled Dixon for a beauty. The left-arm spinner bowled excellent control, and Australia’s asking rate increased.

The addition of Tom Campbell aided a left-right hitting combination in operation. Campbell and Peake followed up on their prior cooperation, helping Australia get closer to their goal. Pakistan needed a special act to get back into the game, and Minhas delivered. He bowled Campbell for 25 in the 39th over.

Then Raza removed Peake for 49 to leave the game evenly poised. Raza’s double-wicket final over put Pakistan just one away from an appearance in the final. However, MacMillan kept his cool and saw Australia through in the final over. Earlier, Azan Awais and Arafat Minhas powered Pakistan to 179 against Australia.

Hugh Weibgen’s Australia won the toss and decided to field first and was successful in stopping the ‘Boys in Green’ at 179 in the first inning. Shamyl Hussain (17 runs from 23 balls) and Shahzaib Khan (4 runs from 30 balls) opened for Pakistan but failed to make a solid partnership to help their side.

In the first powerplay, Pakistan could score only 27 runs. The Aussie bowling attack picked up two wickets in the first 10 overs. However, Azan Awais (52 runs from 91 balls) took control of the match after coming to the crease at the number 3 position. In the 33rd over, Pakistan reached the 100-run mark with the help of Awais and Minhas.

Apart from Awais, Arafat Minhas (52 runs from 61 balls) was the other batter who helped Pakistan give a decent target to chase. Australia dominated the third powerplay and bagged five wickets between the 41st and 50th over.

Meanwhile, the ‘Boys in Green’ suffered as they could only get 47 runs. Other batters like Saad Baig (3 runs from 11 balls), Ahmad Hassan (4 runs from 18 balls), and Haroon Arshad (8 runs from 27 balls) all displayed a sloppy performance at Willowmoore Park.

On the other hand, Tom Straker led the Aussie bowling attack with his six-wicket haul and successfully bundled Pakistan at 179. Other bowlers like Mahli Beardman, Callum Vidler, MacMilllan, and Tom Campbell picked one wicket each.

Tournaments like IPL and ILT20 help players get selected in national squads: Tom Moody

New Delhi: As the cricket world gears up for the highly anticipated T20 World Cup scheduled for June in the West Indies and the United States, former Australia cricketer Tom Moody has underscored the pivotal role of players’ performances in prestigious T20 leagues, particularly the IPL and ILT20, in shaping team selections for the marquee event.

Moody, who is the Director of Cricket for ILT20 franchise Desert Vipers emphasized the significance of standout performances in these fiercely competitive tournaments. In a fiercely competitive landscape, where selection decisions are scrutinised with meticulous detail.

“Well, the IPL like the ILT20 is an important tournament for any player to be performing in because every home country is looking at the performances of all their players in these tournaments because they are highly regarded. The performances in both the IPL and the ILT20 are of a high standard,” said Tom Moody during a virtual media interaction facilitated by the Desert Vipers team of the ILT20.

Moody stressed the importance of consistency and excellence in performance. Players who excel in these leagues not only enhance their individual credentials but also bolster their chances of securing berths in World Cup-bound squads.

“If you’re performing, scoring runs, taking wickets, showing that consistency, it only puts you in a good position as an individual when it comes to those final tough decisions around the selection table. It’s important to continue that sort of confidence with the upcoming World Cup.”

With limited opportunities for international fixtures ahead of the tournament, the IPL assumes added importance as a platform for talent identification and team preparation.

However, Moody acknowledged the unique challenge posed by the World Cup’s dual-venue arrangement, with matches to be played in both the West Indies and the United States.

The unfamiliar conditions in the latter could present a formidable challenge for teams accustomed to the Caribbean’s cricketing landscape, adding an intriguing dimension to the tournament’s dynamics.

“Teams are familiar with Caribbean conditions; the challenge will be playing in the United States. The ground dynamic is different, none of the active cricketers have played there, so it will take a few matches to settle down with the conditions.”

Moody also spoke on the impact that the newly appointed Sri Lanka captain has had on the Desert Vipers squad, he said “He’s been exceptional for us and you can’t replace a player like Hasaranga for sure. He has come into the tournament not playing a lot of cricket but it shows what a world-class player he is. He has come in and bowled exceptionally well for us and taken wickets.”

“It’s great that the Vipers have given him an opportunity to bat at 4 or 5 because I feel that sometimes he’s wasted down at 7 or 8 for Sri Lanka. So he’s captain of Sri Lanka now and I have had a chat with him if he’s going up the order, but time will tell.” Moody heaped praise on the initiative taken by the Desert Vipers keeping sustainability at its core with initiatives that help reduce carbon emission and create a cleaner environment.
