Kohli opts out of remainder of three Test against England series

Virat Kohli remains unavailable for the remainder of the England series.

New Delhi: Star batter Virat Kohli has pulled out of the remainder of the Test series against England for personal reasons, the BCCI confirmed on Saturday, ending speculation around premier player’s availability for the high-profile contest.

Kohli had missed the first two Tests and that he could be unavailable for the remaining three matches was reported by PTI on February 3. “Virat Kohli will remain unavailable for selection for the remainder of the series due to personal reasons. The Board fully respects and supports Mr. Kohli’s decision,” the BCCI said in a release.

Kohli is currently abroad for pressing personal family matter. The series is locked 1-1 with India bouncing back with win the second Test in Vizag after the visitors took the series-opener in Hyderabad.

The third match is scheduled to start from February 15 in Rajkot. That Kohli will be unavailable due to serious personal reasons was well-known but BCCI brass wanted to check one final time if it could avail his services for the final Test in Dharamsala from March 7-11.

“The selection committee always knew that Virat won’t be available for the series and accordingly the contingency plan was kept ready. Everyone in BCCI wants Virat to fulfil his family commitments and then come back with a free mind as and when he deems fit,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The national selection committee included senior players Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul in the squad but their inclusion will be subject to clearance by the BCCI’s medical team. Jadeja had injured his hamstring during the opening Test while Rahul had a right quadricep niggle. Jadeja (87) and Rahul (86) were the top two scorers in Hyderabad.

“Rahul is already fit and ready to come back in the playing eleven. He had a bit of tightness in his quadriceps and the medical team didn’t want it to get aggravated. In case of Jadeja, it is a strain and he is getting better. There are still five days to go before the game and if he shapes up well, nothing like it,” the source said. If both Rahul and Jadeja return to the playing eleven, then Rajat Patidar, who made his debut in Vizag, will have to make way for one of them as Shreyas Iyer has already been dropped.

Senior batter Iyer, who complained of groin and lower back stiffness has not been picked. However his medical update has not been provided by the BCCI. It is believed that Iyer would have been dropped in any case and his injury made the decision easier for selectors.

“If Shreyas was to be rested because of injury, the BCCI medical bulletin would have had an update. Since there are no updates, it can be concluded that he has got the axe,” the source said. Iyer has not scored a fifty for the longest time and his mode of dismissals on batting friendly Indian tracks is a cause of concern. It is understood that Iyer might not be considered for the longer version of the game in near future as he has always been susceptible against short ball, a weakness.

India have one more big Test series in the current WTC cycle — five games against Australia Down Under at the end of the year and Iyer, with his technique, unlikely to get the selectors’ nod for games on tracks offering steep bounce. The only new face in the 17-man squad is Bengal speedster Akash Deep, who has been rewarded for his consistent show in first-class cricket and in recent India A vs England Lions Test series.

Left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar has been released with Jadeja coming back while Mohammed Siraj is back in the squad in place of Avesh Khan. Akash is also a handy batter and bowls at least 10 yards quicker than his Bengal teammate Mukesh Kumar, who is lucky to retain his place.

Akash is however unlikely to make his debut in Rajkot. Currently, he is playing Ranji Trophy match against Kerala in Thumba and will link up with the squad only on February 13. Senior pacer Mohammed Siraj would be ahead in pecking order.

Squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), KS Bharat (WK), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep.

Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul returns for the final three Test against England

The return of Rahul and Jadeja injects much-needed experience into the squad, offering a boost to India’s campaign against a determined English side.

Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul returns for the final three Test against England

Rajkot: KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja have been named in the final three Test squad against England having recovered from the quadriceps and hamstring injuries as Virat Kohli remains out due to family reasons.

The return of Rahul and Jadeja injects much-needed experience into the squad, offering a boost to India’s campaign against a determined English side. However, their participation hinges on clearance from the medical team, underscoring the cautious approach adopted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding player fitness.

While Rahul and Jadeja’s inclusion brings a sense of stability, the absence of key players looms large over the Indian camp. Mohammed Shami’s continued absence due to an ankle injury leaves a void in the fast-bowling department, while the unavailability of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer further complicates the team’s composition.

Kohli’s absence, owing to a family emergency, deprives India of his batting prowess, adding to the challenges faced by captain Rohit Sharma. Meanwhile, Iyer’s withdrawal due to back stiffness opens the door for Rajat Patidar and Sarfaraz Khan to stake their claim in the middle order.

In a bid to bolster the bowling attack, Mohammed Siraj returns to the squad after being rested for the second Test, while Akash Deep replaces Avesh Khan to provide additional firepower.

The third Test of the series, currently locked at 1-1, starts on February 15 in Rajkot. India squad for the final three Tests:Rohit Sharma (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rajat Patidar, Ravindra Jadeja, KS Bharat (wk), Dhruv Jurel (wk), Axar Patel, R Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep.

Hyderabad: As Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja recovers from his hamstring injury and gears up for a possible comeback in the third test, he finds himself in the middle of a controversy as his father levelled some serious allegations against him and his wife Rivaba in an interview.

In the interview, the cricketer’s father Anirudhsinh Jadeja alleged that he doesn’t share a healthy relationship with his son and daughter-in-law. He alleged that his relation with his son started taking a turn for the worse after his marriage to mechanical engineer Rivaba in 2016.

“Do you want to know the truth? I have absolutely no relation with Ravindra and his wife Rivaba. We don’t call them, and they don’t call us. The issue started after two or three months after their wedding,” said Anirudhsinh in an interview with Divya Bhaskar.

“I currently live alone in Jamnagar, while Ravindra resides in a separate bunglow of his own. He lives in the same city, but I don’t get to see him. I don’t know what magic his wife has done on him,” added the cricketer’s father.

“I don’t want to hide anything. We haven’t even seen the face of our granddaughter in five years. Ravindra’s in-laws manage everything. They interfere in everything. They are making merry now because they have got a bank,” he said.

Responding to his father’s allegations, Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja hit back saying “Let’s ignore what’s said in scripted interviews”.

He took to X (formerly twitter) to post a note in his mother tongue Gujarati, which read: “Things mentioned in the interview to Divya Bhaskar are meaningless and false. Those are one-sided comments that I deny. The attempt to tarnish the image of my wife is improper and condemnable. I too have a lot to say but it is better that I don’t reveal those things in public. ”

Ravindra Jadeja’s wife Rivaba Jadeja is a sitting BJP MLA from Jamnagar (North).

The Indian continued his late resurgence and won the fourth game 11-8 to secure the match, ending with a mistake from Khan on the match ball.

“It was really good. First of all, Faraz is a really good player. I’ve seen him play recently and he’s been having some really good results so going into the match I was a bit nervous, but at the same time really excited to be here competing. I was just there, enjoying my squash and enjoying myself,” Senthilkumar was quoted by tournament’s website.

The Indian ace will meet Egyptian world No 21 Youssef Ibrahim in the quarterfinals.

On achieving his maiden Silver-event quarter-final, he said: “I’m really happy, it’s something that I’ve always pushed for, and I’m always going to keep pushing for it as much as I can.”

Asked about his earlier remarks regarding Kohli, De Villiers, known for his strong bond with the former Indian captain off the field from their time at Royal Challengers Bangalore, altered his position.

AB de Villiers admits error in Virat Kohli information sharing

Johannesburg: Former South Africa cricketer AB de Villiers on Friday apologised for sharing “false information” related to Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma that they were expecting their second child which has led to the star Indian batter missing the first two Tests against England.

Enquired about his previous statement on Kohli, De Villiers, who shares a great rapport with the former Indian captain off the field due to their camaraderie and stint at Royal Challengers Bangalore, changed his stand, saying, “Absolutely family comes first, it’s a priority, as I said on my YouTube show. Also, I made a terrible mistake at the same time and yeah, sharing false information which was not true at all. No one knows what’s happening.

“That’s all I can do is wish him well and I think the whole world that follows Virat Kohli and that enjoys his cricket, must just wish him well, and whatever the reason is for this break. Really hope that he comes back stronger, better, healthier, and fresh,” the former South African batter told IANS.

Earlier, de Villiers had said that Kohli’s second child is on the way and it’s family time and things are important to him. It did not go down well with the Indian cricket fans and they lambasted Kohli for giving the England series a miss.

However, now the South African changed his statement and tried to pacify the situation. As per latest reports, Kohli’s absence in the England series is set to be extended, with the senior India batter expected to miss the third and fourth Tests in Rajkot and Ranchi, respectively.

It was on January 22, three days before the start of the England series, that the BCCI announced that Kohli had pulled out of the first two Tests for “personal reasons”.

It will be interesting to see when the selectors announce the team for the next match. And will the BCCI share the “true information” related to Kohli.
