Labuschagne to make captaincy debut for Queensland in Marsh Cup

Marnus Labuschagne

Adelaide: Australian cricketer Marnus Labuschagne is set to take on the captaincy for Queensland Bulls in their final Marsh Cup fixture against South Australia on Wednesday at Karen Rolton Oval in the absence of regular skipper Usman Khawaja, who is rested ahead of New Zealand tour.

It marks the first time Labuschagne has captained a professional team since the Queensland Under-19 side more than a decade ago.

The 29-year-old, who debuted for Queensland in 2014, will captain the side at Karen Rolton Oval where Dylan McLachlan will make his List A debut, becoming the first indigenous men’s cricket player to represent Queensland since spinner Brendan Doggett.

Queensland and South Australia, who are presently ranked fifth and sixth in the Marsh Cup ladder, are unable to advance to the final on Sunday hence the match will be the dead rubber.

As Labuschagne prepares to lead Queensland in the Marsh Cup clash, he also gears up for a Sheffield Shield fixture in Adelaide, seeking to fine-tune his game ahead of Australia’s Test tour of New Zealand.

With Khawaja likely to miss the Shield game to prioritise rest before the upcoming tour, Labuschagne’s role as a senior batter and potential leader assumes greater significance for Queensland.

The Marsh Cup’s final round will witness all six state teams vying for supremacy, with the winner of the clash between New South Wales and Victoria poised to secure the right to host the final.

Meanwhile, Western Australia aims to capitalise on the opportunity to secure a finals spot by defeating Tasmania in Hobart.

BCCI miffed over players opting out of Ranji Trophy and gearing up for IPL

Ishan Kishan has been unavailable for Ranji Trophy.

Hyderabad: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly unhappy and dissatisfied with certain players choosing not to participate in the Ranji Trophy.

The development comes at a time when there are significant speculations over the spots of some players in the national squad, even as wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan has been drawing attention over his absence from cricket since he withdrew from the South-Africa tour mid-way in last November.

While the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been eyeing to make comebacks in the national side, some younger players have chosen to skip First Class cricket upsetting the BCCI. Meanwhile, India head coach Rahul Dravid seemed displeased over media repeatedly questioning the young wick-keeper’s unavailability.

Responding to the questions, Dravid said that Kishan must play some cricket before returning to the national fold. Some sections of media, however, reported that Ishan has returned to training but did not make himself available for selection for the Jharkhand Ranji Team.

According to a Times of India report, the BCCI is likely to send out a notice to all players who are deemed fit, to take part in the Ranji Trophy. The report also states that some of the newspaper’s sources in BCCI have expressed displeasure and further mentioned that some players were already in the  “IPL mode”.

The TOI’s source was quoted as saying: “All the players will be communicated by the BCCI to play for their respective state teams in the Ranji Trophy, as long as they are not on national duty, with only those who are unfit and recovering at NCA being granted an exemption. The Board isn’t too happy with certain players already in IPL mode from January.

Premier League: McTominay header secures 2-1 Man Utd Victory vs. Aston Vill

Birmingham: Scott McTominay’s late header secured Manchester United’s third consecutive Premier League win, as the Reds beat Aston Villa 2-1 away to close the gap on fifth-placed Villa to five points.

Making a really promising start, United were denied twice by inch-perfect defensive interventions from Villa centre-back Diego Carlos inside the opening 12 minutes.

Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring on 17 minutes in a breathless encounter at Villa Park, but Douglas Luiz levelled for Villa midway through the second half.

It was McTominay, who provided the decisive moment on 86 minutes, heading in from Diogo Dalot’s superb cross to secure a crucial three points and United’s third straight league victory. His seven league goals this season have won United 12 points this season, more than any other player in the competition, Premier League reports.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana was also in inspired form, making eight saves, his joint-most in a match since joining Man Utd, as Villa suffered back-to-back home defeats following a 17-match unbeaten run at Villa Park.

With Sunday night’s win, Man Utd are onto sixth place with 41 points, just five behind fifth placed Villa and six behind fourth placed Tottenham Hotspur.
