IND v ENG: India penalized five runs in Rajkot test for pitch infraction

Rajkot: India have been hit with a five-run penalty after all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin ran on the protected area of the pitch during the first session of the second day of the third Test against England on Friday.

In the 102nd over of the India innings when India were 358 for 7, Ashwin pushed the ball into the covers region and attempted to take a run by running down the pitch, before being sent back by Dhruv Jurel.

This led to on-field umpire Joel Wilson fining India with a five-run penalty, who had a word with Ashwin, before signalling a penalty.

As a result, England will begin their first innings from 5/0.

India had already received their first and final warning when all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja had been warned for running on the pitch on the first day of the Test.

3rd Test: Ashwin, Jurel propel India to 388/7 at lunch

Rajkot: Ravichandran Ashwin and debutant wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel take India 388/7 at lunch after losing overnight batters Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav in the first session of day two’s play in the third Test against England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium on Friday.

It was a slow session for India, who added only 62 runs in the first session, 57 of which came from the unbroken partnership for the eighth wicket between Ashwin and Jurel, to reach 388/7 in 113 overs at lunch. While Jurel is 31 not out off 71 balls, Ashwin is unbeaten on 25 off 64 deliveries.

Resuming from 331/7, James Anderson struck in the fourth over of the session after getting a faint edge of night watchman Kuldeep’s bat to wicketkeeper Ben Foakes. In the next over, Jadeja chipped a tame drive straight back to part-time off-spinner Joe Root, falling for 112.

With two new fresh batters, England went to Mark Wood’s thunderbolts, and Ashwin got off the mark with a beautiful punch through cover for four. He tried to bounce out Jurel, who arched back and ramped over slips for six.

Ashwin continued to hit lovely drives and cuts for boundaries, while Jurel looked solid and cleverly glanced and drove in the gap to get his runs, as making 400+ now looks like a realistic target for India.

The only blip for India though was Ashwin running into the danger area while facing Rehan Ahmed in the 102nd over, which led to on-field umpire Joel Wilson fining India with a five-run penalty. Due to this, England will begin their first innings from 5/0.

On day one, Before the final ball of the 80th over, Ravindra Jadeja ran on the danger area and was given an official warning from the umpires. India was previously on the receiving end of the five-run penalty back in 2016 against New Zealand in Indore, where Jadeja was also involved on that occasion.

Brief Scores: India 388/7 in 113 overs (Rohit Sharma 131, Ravindra Jadeja 112; Mark Wood 3-95, James Anderson 1-61) against England

Rajkot: After years of first-class cricket success, Sarfaraz Khan finally made his international debut, entertaining the spectators with his knock of 62 in 66 balls that had nine fours and a six against in third Test against England.

After his dream debut, Sarfaraz received a special phone call from his younger brother, Musheer Khan, who recently shone with the bat for the Indian team in the U19 World Cup.

Following the match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) surprised Sarfaraz by arranging a call from his younger brother, Musheer. While Sarafaraz received his first call-up before the second Test, Musheer was dominating the Under-19 World Cup in South Africa.

In a video shared by the BCCI on their official X account, both brothers were seen conversing on the phone. Musheer complimented his brother on his excellent knock on the day, and both guys offered their thoughts on the event.

“I was playing fine right?” said Sarfaraz. To this, Musheer voiced his pleasure by saying, “Well played, brother. I thoroughly enjoyed it.” Sarfaraz also showed his brother his Test cap and expressed confidence that he, too, will one day represent India.

“You will also represent India in the future,” said Sarfaraz.

Sarfraz also said that he studies his brother’s hitting whenever he struggles because they both use the same method.

“Whenever I struggle a bit with my batting, I look at him as our techniques are the same. It felt really good talking to my brother. Half of my family is here and the other half is in Mumbai,” he added.

Musheer, who finished the Under 19 World Cup as second highest run scorer, admitted that he was concerned when Sarfaraz top-edged a delivery from Joe Root, but thought he was safe.

“I was a little bit worried. When you top-edged the sweep from Joe Root. I was watching and when I saw that the ball had gone past the fielder, I knew you were safe,” said Musheer.

Sarfaraz said he liked the surprise and that it was a great day for him.

“It was a pleasant surprise for me. It is a memorable and important day of my life and I thank the almighty for it,” said Sarfaraz.

Sarfaraz’s hard work came to fruition when he smashed a stylish 62 of 66 balls while coming in at number six. He put on a sparkling show of batting on Day 1 of the third Test against England and looked on course to hit a big score.

However, miscommunication with star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the middle cut short his lovely debut innings as he was run out by Mark Wood at the non-striker’s end.
