Alaaeddin: The magic lamp of NorthEast United FC, Indian Super League’s star performer

When Alaaeddin arrived in India, he was relatively unknown, but quickly proved his worth. He broke Elano’s record of scoring in six consecutive matches and became the fastest player to score over 10 goals in ISL history. Additionally, he set the record for the first player to score three consecutive braces and shares the longest goal-scoring streak in the league. Currently leading the top-scorers chart, Alaaeddin has cemented his place as one of the most formidable forwards in the competition.

Alaaeddin: The magic lamp of NorthEast United FC, Indian Super League’s star performer

Hyderabad: Alaaeddin Ajaraie has taken the Indian Super League (ISL) by storm with his electrifying performances for NorthEast United FC. The Moroccan forward has been a revelation this season, scoring 11 goals and providing 4 assists in just 11 matches.

When he arrived in India, few knew about him, but he quickly silenced any doubts. Breaking Elano’s record of scoring in six consecutive matches, Alaaeddin has set multiple benchmarks, including becoming the fastest player to score more than 10 goals in ISL history. He’s also the first to net three consecutive braces, holding the joint record for the longest goal-scoring streak in the league. Currently at the top of the top-scorers’ chart, he is undoubtedly one of the most feared forwards in the competition.

The 31-year-old’s stellar form in the initial games propelled NorthEast United to a strong start. Scoring 11 goals in the first eight matches. Reflecting on his success, Alaaeddin humbly credited his teammates for his achievements. “I’m happy to have scored 11 goals so far, but I must thank my teammates because without them, this wouldn’t have been possible,” he said.

However, the Moroccan’s scoring streak has recently cooled off. In their last three games, NorthEast United has managed only one win (against Punjab FC) and suffered two losses (against East Bengal and Mohun Bagan SG). Alaaeddin did not score in these fixtures. Despite this dip in form, both the player and the team see Monday’s clash against a struggling Hyderabad FC at GMC Balayogi Stadium as an opportunity to regain their momentum.

Hyderabad FC, languishing at the bottom of the standings and plagued by defensive frailties, could provide the perfect platform for Alaaeddin and his teammates to bounce back. Yet, the Moroccan remains cautious. “We always prepare for every game with 100 per cent focus. The match against Hyderabad FC will be no different. We respect our opponents. As our coach Juan Pedro Benali says, we must stay humble because, in football, any team can beat anyone,” he remarked.

NorthEast United’s transformation under Benali has been remarkable. Last season, the team narrowly missed the ISL playoffs by a single point but made significant progress, including a semifinal finish in the Durand Cup. This season, they started with a bang by lifting the Durand Cup—the club’s first-ever silverware. Many now consider them serious playoff contenders, and Alaaeddin shares that optimism. “Winning the Durand Cup was a great start. In the ISL, the season is long, and we focus on one game at a time. Our main objective is to qualify for the playoffs,” he stated.

Beyond his goal-scoring prowess, Alaaeddin has won hearts with his unique celebration, inspired by the anime character Luffy from One Piece. His iconic ‘fist’ pose has gone viral on social media and fans love it. “I like Luffy’s character, and that inspired my celebration. I started it this season because I want people to remember me that way. Seeing our young Highlanders celebrate like me makes me happy,” he concluded.

The Northeastern team, with seven points from four matches in Group B, moved to second place behind Kerala, while fifth-placed Goa have three points from as many games.

Goa, who entered the match on the back of two losses and just one win, were hoping for a better result, but Damanbhalang Chyne’s penalty in the 89th minute earned Meghalaya a place in the last eight.

Tamil Nadu’s search for their first win in the Santosh Trophy final rounds continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Odisha. The teams were locked in a goalless battle until the break. Alexander Romario Jesuraj converted a penalty to put his side ahead in the 68th minute.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Nitish Reddy, Harshit Rana make Test debut

Perth: Seam-bowling all-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana made debut for India as stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah won the toss and elected to bat first against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener at the Perth Stadium on Friday.

India won the last two Test series played in Australia by identical 2-1 margins in 2018-19 and 2020-21, respectively. They have also been trophy holders since 2016-17. Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli presented Harshit and Nitish with their maiden Test caps.

Apart from Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj completing the four-man pace attack, India have also sprung in a surprise by selecting Washington as their lone spinner ahead of stalwarts like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. “We know what to expect, the wicket gets quicker after the first session. We’re pretty confident. For our batters and team (the WACA practice), it was a great experience. We played a Test here in 2018 so we know what to expect,” said Bumrah.

The visitors will have Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul as openers, with Devdutt Padikkal slotted at number three in the absence of the injured Shubman Gill. At the same time, regular skipper Rohit Sharma is due to link up with the team on November 24, after he stayed back home for the birth of his second child. The BCCI said Gill was not considered for selection for the first Test due to a left thumb injury sustained on Day Two of match simulation at the WACA, adding that its medical team is monitoring his progress on a daily basis.

On the other hand, Australia have handed a debut to batter Nathan McSweeney, who got his Test cap from former player Darren Lehmann. He becomes the 467th player to play Tests for Australia.

Playing XIs: India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, K.L. Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah (c), Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj

Australia: Nathan McSweeney, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitch Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood.

New Delhi: In a first-of-its-kind move, the IPL has announced the dates for the next three seasons. The 2025 season is set to run from March 14 to May 25, followed by the 2026 season from March 15 to May 31, and the 2027 season from March 14 to May 30.

In an email to franchises on Thursday, accessed by ESPN cricinfo, the IPL referred to these as “windows,” though they are likely to become the final dates.

The 2025 season will feature 74 matches, consistent with the previous three editions. However, this is ten fewer than the 84 matches outlined in the IPL’s 2022 media rights document for the 2023-27 cycle.

The tender for the media rights had projected varying match counts across seasons: 74 matches each in 2023 and 2024, 84 matches in 2025 and 2026, and up to 94 games in 2027, the final year of the rights cycle.

The report further added that overseas players from most Full Member nations have received approval from their respective boards to participate in the tournament over the next three years.

However, this does not apply to Pakistan, whose players have been absent from the IPL since the inaugural season in 2008 due to ongoing political tensions between the two countries.

Ahead of the IPL 2025, 574 players set to be featured in the mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 24 and 25. Out of the 574 Players, 366 are Indian and 208 are overseas, including 3 players from associate nations.

The auction will include 318 Indian uncapped players and 12 uncapped overseas players. 204 slots will be up for grabs with 70 available slots for overseas players. Rs 2 crore is the highest reserve price with 81 players opting to be in the highest bracket.

India fall flat to Australia’s seam and extra bounce, crawl at 51/4

Perth: Indian top-order failed to counter seam and extra bounce after their captain Jasprit Bumrah’s inexplicable decision to bat first as the visitors crawled to 51 for 4 at lunch on the first day of the opening Test against Australia here on Friday.

Save KL Rahul (26 off 74 balls), who displayed good technique and admirable temperament till he was at the crease, youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal (0) and Devdutt Padikkal (0) were left searching for answers along with Virat Kohli (5), whose indifferent run of form continued.

Rahul’s contentious dismissal just before lunch put India in complete disarray. At the break, Rishabh Pant was batting on 10 with Dhruv Jurel (4 batting) for company.

Exactly a year back in South Africa, Jaiswal looked all at sea on the bouncy tracks of Centurion and Cape Town. On Friday, Mitchell Starc started with a few back of the length deliveries before he pitched one further up. The ball seamed away and also met Jaiswal’s willow at a height that would have been at least a foot above had it been played in the Indian sub-continent.

The result was a flash drive and the ball was snapped at gully by Marnus Labuschagne. Devdutt Padikkal, coming in place of injured Shubman Gill, never looked intent on coming on the front-foot and even left some over-pitched deliveries which he could have scored.

The result was the 23rd delivery, a fuller one from Josh Hazlewood which Padikkal played with hard hands to offer a regulation catch to Alex Carey. Virat Kohli (5) perhaps got the best delivery of the morning session when Hazlewood dug one short and the star Indian batter couldn’t remove his bat from the line of the ball. The edge resulted to a regulation slip catch.

The Australian pace troika of Starc (2/10), Hazlewood (2/10) and Pat Cummins (0/23) were disciplined during the first hour, keeping the batters quiet. Rahul followed the basics during this course — playing the one coming into his body while leaving all other deliveries from length. He did play a couple of push drives and the first boundary was a streaky one when he tried to sway from the line of a short delivery and the edge flew over slips.

But there were a couple of punchy cover drives with a few that went past his bat. However, Rahul got out with less than 10 minutes left for lunch. Starc, back for his second spell, got one to move a shade and the snicko showed deflection although the batter perhaps suggested that his bat hit the pad at the same time when the ball went past the edge.

High ‘five’! Australia all out for 104 as Jasprit Bumrah runs riot

India secures 46-run lead on a pitch that continues to offer plenty of bounce and sideways movement, making batting difficult with the new ball

Perth: India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah took five wickets as Australia was bowled out for 104 in its first innings on the second day of the opening match of the five-test series on Saturday.

India secured a 46-run lead on a pitch that continues to offer plenty of bounce and sideways movement, making batting difficult with the new ball.

In the first four sessions of the game 20 wickets have fallen, 17 of them on the opening day. Australia was bowled out at the stroke of lunch Saturday after top scorer and fast bowler Mitchell Starc (26) skied paceman Harshit Rana (3-48) after a stubborn 25-run stand that lifted Australia from 79-9.

Starc and Hazlewood (6 not out) frustrated India for 90 minutes before Rana struck. Australia lost two quick wickets in Alex Carey (21) and Nathan Lyon (5) and was embarrassingly facing the prospects of being bowled out for its lowest total against its subcontinent opposition.

It was Bumrah’s 11th five-wicket haul in his 41st test match when he forced Carey to edge an outswinger to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Starc was hit on the helmet when he ducked into a Rana delivery and required attention from the medical and support staff under the concussion rule.

Starc and Rana are teammates at Kolkata Knight Riders in the T20 Indian Premier League, and Rana quickly apologized to Starc. Five overs after Carey fell, Lyon lobbed a catch to K.L. Rahul at third slip to give Rana his second wicket on his test debut.

After winning the toss and batting on the first day, India was dismissed for 150 following some strong middle order batting that lifted the tourist from 73-6 following a 48-run stand between Pant (37) and top scorer Nitesh Kumar Reddy (41) in his test debut. Hazlewood led the bowling attack with 4-29 while Starc, Mitchell Marsh and skipper Pat Cummins claimed two wickets each. Australia and India are one-two in the World Test Championship standings.

All set for IPL auction, Pant and Arshdeep likely to break the bank

There will be INR 641.5 crore cumulatively in kitty of 10 teams with 204 possible slots to be filled but one can be rest assured that all eyes will be trained on Pant’s name when it comes up

All set for IPL auction, Pant and Arshdeep likely to break the bank

Rishabh Pant and Arshdeep Singh

Jeddah: The bids on Rishabh Pant could well soar like his audacious no-look six at Perth as he seems poised to become the highest paid player among the 577 who will go under the hammer at the two-day IPL mega auction starting here on Sunday.

There will be INR 641.5 crore cumulatively in the kitty of 10 teams with 204 possible slots to be filled but one can be rest assured that all eyes will be trained on Pant’s name when it comes up.

Punjab Kings, with INR 110.50 crore in their coffers, are ready to outbid the other franchises. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with INR 83 crore, can be another serious bidder, so can be Delhi Capitals, who have INR 73 crore and a Right To Match (RTM) card to get their skipper for past few seasons back.

However, it is reliably learnt that Pant doesn’t want DC to flash the RTM card as their parting of ways has not been the most pleasant and he no longer feels a part of the franchise. His comment that “my Retention wasn’t about money for sure” is a reflection of his thought process.

But the biggest question will be whether Pant can become the first Indian player to breach the INR Rs 25 crore mark? The answer lies in how the 10 franchises are stacked up and how they are looking at their team composition. A Chennai Super Kings (CSK) or Mumbai Indians (MI), with only Rs 45 crore, wouldn’t even be going for the star keeper-batter.

But Punjab Kings, known for changing their team every two years, have kept their entire purse on advice of their head coach Ricky Ponting, who wants to reunite with his favourite player. There are 81 players bracketed in INR two crore category base price and two sets of marquee players but one can trust the current India internationals to breach the million dollar mark (INR 8.5 crore).

If Pant would be the cynosure of this auction, Arshdeep Singh, with a staggering 96 T20 International wickets in three seasons, can easily have multiple teams going for him. Punjab has the RTM card but they wouldn’t know where the bidding stops as it could be north of Rs 20 crore.

Fast bowlers — both Indian and foreign — will be in high demand during the two days while in case of batters, most of the star Indians save Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul are taken. Iyer is believed to be Delhi Capitals’ choice for captaincy.

Pant, Rahul and Iyer are three potential captains as RCB, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings are also going to shop for possible leaders. Among Indians, Ishan Kishan will keep the auctioneer busy although MI might not be in a position to shell out Rs 15.25 crore like last time as they need some good bowling support for Bumrah.

The other interesting name would be Mohammed Shami, who Sanjay Manjrekar thinks won’t attract too many bidders, something the player didn’t take too kindly to. He is playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and how his bidding goes would be noteworthy.

Other names to watch out:
Khaleel Ahmed: Those who won’t be able to get Arshdeep can go whole hog for Khaleel. Since Yash Dayal has also been retained by RCB, Khaleel could end up getting handsome bids. He hasn’t exactly shown his potential over the years but it is the demand-supply equation that can get him a million dollar deal.

Deepak Chahar: Injuries have pegged him back in past few years but there is no better swing bowler in Powerplay overs in Indian conditions like Chahar. Multiple franchises could bid for him. He has played Ranji Trophy and picked up a five-for and has not been unfit so far.

Avesh Khan: He had 19 wickets last season for Rajasthan Royals and went for Rs 10 crore. He might once again fetch a bid as good as that if not better.

Harshal Patel: It is that time of the year when people are left stunned as Harshal’s name comes up and he walks away with a million dollar contract. He will once again be a hot property even though he is no longer considered good for national selection. But 24 wickets last season mean that he won’t be ignored.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Indian seam and swing bowlers controlling powerplay overs are a rare commodity and experience isn’t readily available in the Supermarket. He might not grab eyeballs but if he remains under Rs 10 crore, he could still be a bargain buy and world knows MS Dhoni (CSK’s ‘Real Captain’) likes experienced blokes around him.

Jos Buttler: It is unlikely that Yashasvi Jaiswal will get to pair up with his favourite ‘Jos Bhai’ but the Englishman, in the absence of Ben Stokes, could well be the highest paid foreign player. It won’t be a surprise if RCB, factoring in the batting paradise at Chinnaswamy and the short side boundaries, go the distance for him with INR 83 crore in kitty.

Liam Livingstone: Livingstone is one player, who could certainly be on Punjab Kings’ RTM radar as well as on wish-list of some of the other franchises. He will certainly fetch a good sum.

Kagiso Rabada: Kagiso Rabada will always be in high demand in the IPL Universe. The Delhi Capitals could once again want the pacer back and Punjab would have the option of RTM. Mumbai Indians wouldn’t mind a good pace partner for Bumrah.

Perth: India on Saturday took control of the opening Test against Australia, thanks to Jasprit Bumrah‘s five-wicket haul which had the hosts shot out for 104. Meanwhile, Indian openers’ — Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul — solid start help team extend the lead to 130 runs by tea.

Building on the 46-run first-innings lead, Rahul (34 batting, 70 balls) again displayed good technique while Jaiswal (42 batting, 88 balls) also showed that he had learnt his lessons from the first innings during their unbroken opening stand of 84 runs.

Rahul’s on-drive off Pat Cummins can easily be called the shot of the match but it was heartening to see Jaiswal put in a big stride forward while driving Mitchell Starc through covers apart from getting under the bounce and playing the ramp shot.

Jaiswal curbed his urge to drive on the up initially and that was the best part about his batting. Once he had defended enough deliveries, the Australian pacers didn’t have any option but to try either short or full length which he utilised well.

The whip over midwicket to hit Starc for one-bounce four and then induce a grin from the pacer by telling him “You are slow” spoke volumes about how fearless the current generation of Indian cricketers is.

In the case of Rahul, he kept a very loose bottom-hand and that helped with the deliveries, even the ones that took the thickish edge only to fall way in front of the slip cordon.

Unlike times when he has had issues, Rahul didn’t do a front-foot press across the off-stump and his trigger movement was late allowing him to switch on front and backfoot easily.

In the morning, India captain Bumrah deservedly got his 11th five-wicket haul while debutant Harshit Rana bowled a fiery opening spell to dismiss the hosts for 104 at the stroke of lunch despite a stiff last-wicket resistance from Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

The Indian team would be a touch disappointed that they couldn’t get a handy lead, which seemed to be on the cards once Australia were reduced to 79 for 9. But Starc (26 off 113 balls) shielded Hazlewood (7 not out off 31 balls) admirably during their 25-run last-wicket stand that lasted 18 overs and got the lead below 50 (46 runs), making it a contest of who bats better in the second innings.

The day began on a bright note as Bumrah (5/30 in 18 overs), bowling the second over of the day, got one to rear up from back of the length and Carey’s edge carried at a good height to Rishabh Pant behind stumps. The skipper’s celebration was understated as he purposefully strode back to his bowling mark even before Nathan Lyon had arrived.
