KL Rahul attended to by physio after getting hit on hand

Melbourne: India opener KL Rahul got hit on his hand while batting at the nets here on Saturday and was promptly attended to by the visiting team’s physio ahead of the fourth Test against Australia.

Rahul was hit on his right hand and was seen in some discomfort at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which will host the Boxing Day Test from December 26 with the five-match series levelled at 1-1.

There is no clarity on the extent of injury and the team management has also not issued any statement on why he had sought medical attention.

In a video that surfaced on social media, Rahul was seen holding the right hand while receiving treatment.

Rahul has been the team’s in-form batter in the ongoing tour, scoring 235 runs from six innings at an impressive average of 47.

The elegant right-hander has so far struck two half-centuries and is set to open the batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in the fourth Test.

Overall, he is the second highest scorer in the marquee series behind Australia’s swashbuckling middle-order batter Travis Head, who has already smashed two hundreds.

Battling through multiple rain interruptions, Rahul held firm with a vital knock of 84 in India’s first innings of the third Test in Adelaide, the innings going a long way in helping India to save the match.

PM Modi pens heartfelt letter to Ashwin, equates retirement to ‘carrom ball’

Prime Minister says the latter’s “jersey no. 99 will be sorely missed” in the cricket field

PM Modi pens heartfelt letter to Ashwin, equates retirement to ‘carrom ball’

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his heartiest congratulations to off-spin maestro Ravichandran Ashwin on his illustrious career who retired from international cricket. The PM said the latter’s “jersey no. 99 will be sorely missed” in the cricket field.

Concluding his 14-year international career after the Gabba Test ended in a draw, Ashwin has left behind a rich legacy as one of India’s greatest match-winners. His last international game was the day-night Test against Australia in Adelaide, where he took 1-53 in his 18 overs and made 29 runs with the bat.

In his letter, PM Modi described Ashwin’s retirement as a surprising twist and equated it to an unexpected carrom ball instead of the anticipated off-breaks. “The announcement of your retirement from international cricket surprised fans in India and across the world. At a time when everyone was looking forward to many more off-breaks, you bowled a carrom ball that bowled everyone. However, everyone understands that this must have been a hard decision for you as well, especially after the outstanding career you have had playing for India,” the letter read.

“Please accept my heartiest congratulations on a career that has been full of brilliance, hard work and putting the team above everything else. As you bid farewell to international cricket, jersey number 99 will be sorely missed. Cricket lovers will miss the sense of expectation they felt when you took to the crease to bowl – there was always a feeling that you were weaving a web around the opponents that would trap a victim any moment. You possessed an uncanny ability to outwit batsmen with good old off-spin as well as innovative variations, as the situation demanded,” the letter continued.

Ashwin’s international career began in 2010 when he debuted in ODIs against Sri Lanka. A year later, he made his Test debut against the West Indies. Over 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is, he claimed 765 wickets across all formats.

“As an ambassador of the game, both on and off the field, you have made the nation and your family proud. I take this opportunity to congratulate your parents, your wife Prithi and your daughters as well. Their sacrifices and support, I am sure, have been crucial to your growth as a cricketer and as a person. I hope that you get to spend more time with them, something that you would have looked forward to all these years. May you find ways to continue contributing to the game that you dearly love. Once again, heartiest congratulations on an illustrious career and best wishes for the future,” it concluded.

India beat Bangladesh to lift inaugural Women’s U19 T20 Asia Cup

Indian players celebrate after the victory

Kuala Lumpur: Opener G Trisha made a doughty fifty before the left-arm troika of Ayushi Shukla, Sonam Yadav and Parunika Sisodia spun web around Bangladesh batters as India scored a 41-run win to emerge champions in the inaugural Women’s T20 U19 Asia Cup here on Sunday.

On a spongy pitch, Trisha’s 52 off 47 balls (5×4, 2×6) guided India to 117 for seven, but Indian spinners cut through the Bangladesh line-up to bundle them out for 76 in 18.3 overs. The biggest partnership in Indian innings, in fact in the match itself, was between Trisha and her skipper Nikki Prasad — a 41-run alliance for the fourth wicket.

India batters struggled against pacer Farjana Easmin, who took four wickets. Despite that, India were restricted to a below-par total, and Bangladesh seemed well on track for a win once they reached 44 for two in the seventh over.

However, Ayushi (3/17), Sonam (2/13) and Parunika (2/12) took over from that point as Bangladesh lost remaining eight wickets for a mere 32 runs.

Brief scores:
India: 117/7 in 20 overs (G Trisha 52; Farjana Easmin 4/32) beat Bangladesh: 76 all out in 18.3 overs (Juairiya Ferdous 22; Ayushi Shukla 3/17, Sonam Yadav 2/13, Parunika Sisodia 2/12).

Boxing Day Test: Rohit, KL Rahul injured during practice session

Melbourne: Ahead of the Boxing Day Test against Australia, India skipper Rohit Sharma and opener KL Rahul suffered injury scares during the side’s practice session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday.

While facing throwdowns, Rohit took a painful blow on the side of his left knee. Though he tried to continue his practice session, Rohit was forced to seek medical attention and was seen sitting on a chair, with his left knee being nursed by an ice pack for almost 25 minutes. If that wasn’t enough, Rahul also got hit on his right hand in the training session and needed immediate medical attention.

There has been no official statement from the BCCI or the Indian team about the status of Rohit and Rahul after suffering injury scares. Seamer Akash Deep was also hit on his hand during the practice session, but said in the press conference, “The practice pitch is probably meant for white-ball cricket, the ball kept low at times. As for these minor injuries, these things happen at training, and there are no major concerns because of that. I am fine.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rohit and Rishabh Pant had long batting sessions in the nets, while Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and other pacers went about their practice with full intensity. The Indian team will have a rest day on Monday, ahead of the fourth Test starting in Melbourne on December 26.

The five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is currently locked at 1-1. India began the series with a comprehensive 295-run win in Perth, followed by Australia bouncing back with a ten-wicket victory in Adelaide, before the two teams were held on to a draw in a rain-hit match at Brisbane.
