KL Rahul flies to London, unlikely for final Test against England in Dharamsala

Kl Rahul

Hyderabad: India have secured a series win against visitors England with a victory in Ranchi on Sunday, but the fitness and availability of players is still a point of discussion, as the team will soon head to Dharamsala for the fifth and the last test match which will begin on March 7.

Since the fourth Test match finished on Day 4, members of the team have all gone in different directions form Ranchi and they will all be assembling in Chandighar on March 2 and will be heading to Dharamsala in a chartered flights on March 3.

The long gap between the two matches, however, does not seem to bring any joy to team India in terms of players being injured or unavailable. Although KL Rahul was stated to be 90 percent fit ahead of the third Test in Rajkot, after missing out on the second match due to a right quadriceps soreness, his participation in the last Test is still uncertain at this point.

According to a report on Cricbuzz, the senior batsman has been flown to London for an expert opinion as he is still experiencing some discomfort in the quadriceps . Notably, Rahul underwent a surgery for the same injury last year.

Given Rahul’s importance in the team across all formats, especially with the T20 World Cup in the near future, the management seems to be prioritising his long-term recovery at this point even as some enthusiasts and experts in the know of things stress that his injury is not that serious.

On the other hand, bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah‘s availability for the firth Test is not confirmed at this point. He was rested by the team for the fourth Test to manage his workload. He is most likely to return for the last match.

With every match being crucial for the World Test Championship (WTC), India will look to put their best team forward in Dharamsala even after the series won. India is currently placed second in the WTC standing behind New Zealand.

Hyderabad: Sreenidi Deccan Football Club host Mohammedan Sporting Club in a mouthwatering top of the table I-League clash here at the Deccan Arena on Thursday which could have ramifications on the title race.

The Deccan Warriors are currently in 3rd place in the I-League standings but could displace the Black Panthers at the top with a win. The corresponding fixture had ended in a 2-1 win for Mohammedan SC in Kolkata.

Sreenidi Deccan head coach Carlos Vaz Pinto and midfielder Kean Lewis addressed the media ahead of the clash. Speaking about the 2-0 win over Namdhari FC in the previous game, the Portuguese tactician observed, “They were a challenging opponent who put a lot of numbers behind the ball but we overcame that and got the win which was the most important thing. We are not perfect so there is always room for improvement and we will keep striving for the same.”

Despite being billed as a ‘title decider’, Vaz Pinto refused to get drawn into championship talk and reiterated the focus was taking it game by game. “The league will not be decided tomorrow, neither for Sreenidi Deccan nor for Mohammedan SC. Everyone was saying the league was done in December but it is a different story now.

First, they were talking about Mohammedan SC and now they are talking about Gokulam Kerala. Here at Sreenidi Deccan, we are talking about the three points on offer tomorrow and our focus is on working hard to get them,” he said.

Winger Kean Lewis faced a challenging initial period after signing for Sreenidi Deccan in summer but the experienced 31-year-old, who played for Mohammedan SC last season, has been one of the most consistent performers in the team of late. “Every player wants to play and I am no different. I am happy to keep contributing and help the team keep winning,” he said. “Both teams have different players as compared to last season so it is difficult to predict how the game will pan out tomorrow, but we will be playing to win.”

Mauricio Motta Paes named Iran volleyball coach

Paes will serve as Team Melli’s head coach until the end of the 2024 Olympic Games, with the option to extend for two more years.

Italian coach Alberto Giuliani was a serious candidate for taking charge of Iran’s volleyball team but the Federation opted Paes.

He has most recently worked as Ukraine’s Epicentr-Podolyany.

Paes replaced Behrouz Ataei, who was dismissed in October following poor results in the 2023 Volleyball Nations League.

Italian coach Angelo Lorenzetti, Roberto Piazza, Russian Vladimir Alekno, Belgian Vital Heynen, and Saeid Marouf were among the candidates for the job.

Iran’s chances of reaching the 2024 Paris Olympics are slim due to poor results in the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Nations League and the Olympic qualifiers.

ACA report alleges teammates ‘threatened’ to support Hanuma Vihari

New Delhi: Days after India batter Hanuma Vihari vowed to never play for Andhra in domestic cricket following political interference in him being forced to leave captaincy, the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) has alleged that the rest of the team were threatened to sign the letter in favour of the right-handed batter.

Following Andhra’s four-run loss to Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Monday, Vihari shared that he had to step down from the captaincy just after the first round not due to personal reasons, but because of political interference.

He also a copy of his statement on social media along with another picture of the signatures of his teammates, asking for him to be reinstated as captain. But the ACA, as per a report in India Today, has said that the rest of the cricketers were forced to sign it in favour of Vihari.

“He asked the Andhra Cricket Association to continue on behalf of Andhra, apologising for being emotional and frustrated for not being selected in the Indian team, as he was not given the NOC.

“The parents of the players have brought it to the attention of the association many times that the local players are losing opportunities due to players coming and going of the team. But keeping in mind Vihari’s experience, the team management kept him. However, it is unfortunate that Vihari is making false accusations on social media platforms.”

“Hanuma Vihari has alleged that despite all the players in the team supporting him to continue as the captain, he was removed. In this regard, the concerned players have complained to the Andhra Cricket Association against Vihari.

“Some players have complained to the Andhra Cricket Association that they were forced to sign under threats. Andhra Cricket Association will thoroughly investigate all the complaints received and report the facts to the BCCI,” said ACA, as per the report.

The report further quoted the ACA saying that Vihari was making a class difference in the Andhra team. “Moreover, players had previously complained to the Andhra Team Managers Association that Vihari used foul language and misbehaved with fellow players during the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament. It was stated that due to the behaviour of Hanuma Vihari, there was a class difference in the team.

“In January 2024, after the first Ranji Trophy match, ACA Senior Selection Committee Chairman, Vasireddy Chandramouli Prasad Chaudhary, sent an e-mail to the Andhra Cricket Association, proposing a new captain following complaints about Vihari’s form.

“In response to this, Vihari also sent a mail to Andhra Cricket Association saying that he will abide by the decision taken by the selection committee one hundred percent. Andhra Cricket Association did not interfere in this matter. The decision making authority is entirely taken by the selection committee.”

“It is very unfortunate that some political parties and their leaders criticise the prestigious Andhra Cricket Association on the basis of Vihari’s allegations on social media. ACA politely appeals to those who don’t like politics over cricket,” ACA said.

Vihari, who last played Tests for India against England at Birmingham in July 2022, began his domestic cricket career with Hyderabad in 2010 and played for the side until the 2015/16 season. He later returned to play for Hyderabad in the 2021/22 season, before moving back to Andhra for the next season.
