Ravi Shastri feels India justified in celebrating on avoiding follow-on in Brisbane

Ravi Shastri: Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes the Rohit Sharma-led side was justified in celebrating on avoiding the follow-on during the rain-hit third Test against Australia in Brisbane, which led to the five-match series being locked at 1-1.

On Day Four of the match at the Gabba, Akash Deep sliced a Pat Cummins delivery over the gully for a boundary, which helped India avoid the follow-on, leading to jubilant celebrations in the dressing room by captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli.

While many in the Australian camp were surprised by it, Shastri felt there was nothing bad about it. “You should celebrate. It required a lot of character from the last pair with 35-36 runs needed. That celebration showed they knew the importance of that effort within the dressing room in the context of the series.” “It’s one thing following-on, it’s one thing then again being 2-3 down as opposed to, you going ahead and rattling the Australian top-order. It is fully justified,” said Shastri on the ICC Review show.

Talking about the scenes in Brisbane, Shastri recalled the 89-run partnership between Bumrah and Mohammed Shami at the Lord’s during the 2021 series against England, a match which India eventually won. He also highlighted the importance of lower-order bailing India out of tough situations.

“It reminded me of the celebration, in COVID times when Jasprit and Mohammed Shami were involved in a partnership at the Lord’s, which turned the game on its head. England were odds-on favourites on the final day to win the Test. And that partnership, I think of about 80 or 90, suddenly turned the game on its head, and by the end of the day, India had won the Test match.”

“When the tail-enders are stubborn, they fight it out there. It makes a massive difference. It did it on the last tour. When Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari batted the whole of the last session to save the game, going into the Gabba and then winning the series.”

With the five-match series tied at 1-1 ahead of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, Shastri feels the fight shown by India in avoiding the follow-on at Brisbane will serve as a big boost to the visitors ahead of the crunch games.
“It’ll lift the Indian team. And for me, the series is on a level peg now and India might just be calling the shots. Massive. They would give anything for a 1-1 result. The first Test was in Perth, the second Testa day-nighter in Adelaide, and then the third Test was in Brisbane. Any overseas team will, you know, settle for a 1-1 score because come Melbourne, come Sydney, I think India will be powerful.”

“They’ve been kept in this series single-handedly by Jasprit Bumrah. If the big boys wake up, and step up to the plate, which I just get the gut feeling they will, then Australia have a problem on their hands. Yeah, they got out of jail but they are not on bail. They are free birds in Melbourne. They can do what they want and come and attack Australia on Boxing Day,” he concluded.

Dear Ashwin, from not knowing how to put a kit bag together to following you to stadiums all over the world, rooting for you, watching you and learning from you, it has been an absolute pleasure

Retired Cricketer Ashwin’s wife pens heartfelt tribute after his sudden retirement

Ravichandran Ashwin

Chennai: India’s ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s wife Prithi Narayanan has penned a heartfelt tribute for her husband following his recent retirement from the game, saying “it is time to set the burden of being you down” and embrace life beyond the game.

Ashwin made a surprise announcement of his retirement after the drawn third Test at Brisbane. The veteran cricketer picked up just one wicket during the tour, including the 10-wicket loss at Adelaide.

The 38-year-old retired with a stellar record of 537 Test wickets at an average of 24, in addition to scoring 3,503 runs, including six centuries. He also claimed 156 wickets in ODIs and 72 in T20Is.

Describing her tribute as a “Love letter from a fan girl”, Prithi wrote on instagram: “Dear Ashwin, from not knowing how to put a kit bag together to following you to stadiums all over the world, rooting for you, watching you and learning from you, it has been an absolute pleasure. The world you introduced me to gave me the privilege to watch and enjoy a sport that I love from close quarters.

“It also showed me how much passion, hardwork and discipline is needed to keep your head above water. And sometimes even that is not enough. I remember us talking about why you, R Ashwin, had to do all of this and a lot more to even stay relevant in the scheme of things.”

Ashwin, who debuted in 2011 against the West Indies, earned a reputation for his relentless pursuit of excellence. His near-equal tally of 269 wickets against right-handers and 268 against left-handers highlights his versatility.

“How awards, the best of stats, the POMs, the accolades, the records didn’t matter if you didn’t sharpen your skill sets constantly and did not put in the work. Sometimes, nothing is enough,” Prithi continued.

“As you end your wonderful international run, I only want to tell you that it’s all good. It is all going to be good. It is time to set the burden of being you down. Live life on your terms, make space for those extra calories, make time for your family, make time to do absolutely nothing, share memes all day, create a new bowling variation, bug our kids out of their minds. Just do it all.”

Prithi, who has been a constant companion on Ashwin’s cricketing journey, reflected on his meticulous approach to his craft.

“When I saw Ashwins PC, I thought of small and big moments. Many many memories over the last 13-14 years. The big wins , the MOS awards, the quiet silence in our room after an intense game, the sound of the shower running for much longer than usual on some evenings post play, the scratch of pencil over paper as he scribbled thoughts down, the constant streaming of footage videos when he is making a game plan, the calm of meditative breathing before leaving for each game, certain songs playing on repeat while he unwinds..

“The times we weeped in joy – after the CT final, after the MCG win, after the Sydney draw, The Gabba win, after making a comeback in T20s…the times we sat in silence and the times when we had our hearts broken,” she wrote.

Virat Kohli’s pub in Bengaluru ‘violates’ fire safety rules, gets notice

Bengaluru: Civic body Bengaluru Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued a notice to cricketer Virat Kohli‘s pub ‘One8 Commune’ over alleged fire safety violations.

The restaurant, located on the sixth floor of Ratnam’s Complex on upscale MG Road near the Chinnaswamy International Cricket Stadium, has been reported to be functioning without a no objection certificate from the Fire Department. Earlier, a notice was issued on November 29 on the complaint of social activists HM Venkatesh and Kunigal Narasimhamurthy.

However, no reply has been received to date. Now, the BBMP has been given a seven-day deadline, and if clarification is missed this time too, legal action will be initiated against the said pub, the notice issued by the Health Officer of Shanthinagar Division of the BBMP said.

Complainant Venkatesh stated, “Many restaurants, bars, and pubs in high-rise buildings across Bengaluru are operating without any fire safety measures in place. In the past, fire accidents in Bengaluru have led to significant loss of life and injuries. For instance, during the Carlton Towers fire caused by a short circuit, people jumped off the building in an attempt to save their lives.”

“To prevent such incidents, BBMP and the Fire Department have conducted audits. They identified several buildings without proper fire safety measures and issued rules stating that licenses should not be granted to such buildings, and operations should not be permitted on those premises,” Venkatesh demanded.

Earlier, in July, an FIR was registered against One8 Commune for operating past the 1 am deadline. The FIR stated that the establishment was open and serving customers at 1.20 am, which exceeded the permissible time limit.

BGT: Kohli’s role in the Boxing Day Test could be the ‘difference-maker’, feels Bangar

BGT: Kohli’s role in the Boxing Day Test could be the ‘difference-maker’, feels Bangar

New Delhi: Former India head coach Sanjay Bangar believes that the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is the perfect opportunity for Virat Kohli to rise to the occasion and reestablish himself as the fulcrum of India’s batting lineup.

With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy locked at 1-1, this match is crucial for India’s hopes of clinching the series and solidifying their chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

Kohli’s form has been a mixed bag in the ongoing series. While his century in Perth played a pivotal role in India’s victory, his performances in the other matches have been underwhelming. With just 126 runs across six innings at an average of 30, Kohli has failed to maintain consistency. Excluding his Perth hundred, he has scored only 26 runs in five innings.

Speaking to Star Sports, Bangar highlighted the technical challenges Kohli has faced, particularly with deliveries outside the off-stump. Australian bowlers have effectively targeted this weakness, forcing Kohli to make errors. However, the former Indian cricketer stressed that patience and a calm approach at the crease could be Kohli’s antidote to these struggles.

“Sometimes you need to keep your status as a batter in control a little. When you surrender slightly to the game, spend a little time, ease out in the middle for some time, wait for the bowler to come to you, and do not go yourself towards the bowler, that’s the sign of a big player,” Bangar said.

The MCG offers Kohli a stage that has been kind to him in the past. With 316 runs at an average of 52.66 at this venue, Kohli has fond memories, including a majestic 169-run knock in the Boxing Day Test of 2014. The conditions in Melbourne – famed for offering bounce and carry – align with Kohli’s strengths, making this match a golden chance for him to rediscover his form.

Bangar added that Kohli needs to focus on playing deliveries close to his front pad, a method that could help him regain rhythm and fluency. “Play as many balls as possible close to your front pad and then the runs will flow. It’s not that he hasn’t scored runs; he scored a century three innings ago.

“Virat’s role in this high-stakes encounter could be the difference-maker. He has done it before at the MCG, and there is no reason why he can’t do it again,” Bangar pointed out.

The draw in Gabba Test showcased India’s resilience, but it also underlined the batting woes of experienced players like Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma. With the series evenly poised, a strong batting performance in Melbourne is critical. Kohli, in particular, will need to lead from the front to set the tone for the rest of the lineup in Melbourne.

Hardik Pandya to be available for Baroda in Vijay Hazare Trophy knockouts

Hardik Pandya to be available for Baroda in Vijay Hazare Trophy knockouts

Hardik Pandya

Hyderabad: India all-rounder Hardik Pandya will return to Baroda’s squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy knockout matches after not being named in the team for the first few rounds of the tournament that commenced on Saturday across different venues.

The Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) announced that Pandya will join the squad during the knockout stages of the ongoing 50-over domestic tournament, provided the team qualifies.

“He will play from the knockouts; he has informed us,” Kiran More, a member of the Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) of the BCA, was quoted saying by Cricbuzz.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the national selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, have emphasised that players must participate in domestic competitions unless explicitly exempted. Pandya recently competed in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), where Baroda reached the semifinals.

Over seven matches, he scored 246 runs and took six wickets. The 31-year-old has not played a non-T20 match in over 14 months, with his last appearance being during the ODI World Cup on October 19 last year against Bangladesh in Pune.

He suffered an ankle injury in that match, sidelining him for an extended period, and he has since stopped playing red-ball cricket altogether. His involvement in the one-day domestic tournament could be pivotal for his selection in next year’s Champions Trophy, especially as India evaluate options like Nitish Reddy, an all-rounder from Andhra Pradesh who has showcased impressive performances in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series in Australia.

Since his injury, Pandya has participated in 38 T20 matches across international, IPL, and domestic competitions but has not played in other formats. This has fueled speculation that he is focusing solely on T20 cricket.

However, Kiran More dismissed such claims, stating, “He participated in all the SMAT matches, and he will play in the 50-over games too. Baroda performed well in the SMAT, reaching the semifinals, which they lost due to wet conditions in Bengaluru. Hopefully, the team will make it to the knockouts of the VHT as well.”

Baroda, currently captained by Hardik’s brother Krunal Pandya, is competing in Hyderabad as part of Group E, which includes Tripura, Kerala, Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. The Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) knockout rounds are scheduled to be hosted in Baroda from January 9, with the final set for January 18.

BCCI SGM to be held on January 12 for electing new secretary and treasurer: Sources

BCCI

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be holding a Special General Meeting (SGM) in its Mumbai headquarters at 12 noon on January 12, 2025 for electing new Secretary and Treasurer.

Sources have confirmed to IANS that the notice for the elections was sent out to state associations on Saturday afternoon by Devajit Saikia, who issued it as the BCCI Joint Secretary.

Incidentally, Saikia is serving as acting Secretary, after BCCI president Roger Binny exercised his special powers granted in the constitution. Article 7.2 (d) in the BCCI constitution goes as, “The President shall, in the event of a vacancy, or indisposition of an office-bearer, delegate the functions to another Office-Bearer, delegate the functions to another Office-Bearer, until the vacancy is duly filled up, or the indisposition ceases.”

The elections for twin vacancies have come up in the BCCI after Jay Shah left the Secretary post to take charge as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) earlier this month.

Later, Treasurer Ashish Shelar stepped down from his role in the BCCI following him being included as cabinet minister in the Maharashtra state government. The BCCI constitution states that ministers are barred from holding a position as an office bearer in the cricket board, which led to Shelar giving up his Treasurer role.

The constitution also says if there is a vacancy in the Apex Council, it has to be filled up via elections “at a Special General Body Meeting of the BCCI convened by the secretary for that purpose within 45 days.”

As of now, there has been no definitive word over who could be the successors to posts left by Shah and Shelar. But with the election notice given out, it means there is ample time to decide who emerge as suitable candidates for the two vacant office-bearers posts in the BCCI.
