Formula 1 team Red Bull has dropped Sergio Perez after months of poor results.

Perez has not won a race since April 2023, even as his teammate Max Verstappen has dominated F1, and the 34-year-old Mexican was rarely competitive this season.

Red Bull announced the move Wednesday, terminating Perez’s contract two years early, and said a replacement will be announced “in due course.”

Nicknamed “Checo,” Perez started the 2024 season with four podium finishes from the first five races, but he wasn’t in the top three since. His last race finish higher than sixth was in May. Verstappen won nine races and his fourth consecutive title this year.

The last time there was such a gulf in results between an F1 champion and the team’s other driver in F1 was in 1994, when Verstappen’s father Jos was dropped before the end of the season as Michael Schumacher won the title with Benetton.

“Driving for Red Bull has been an unforgettable experience and I’ll always cherish the successes we achieved together,” Perez said in a team statement.

“We broke records, reached remarkable milestones, and I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many incredible people along the way,” he added.

“A special thank you to the fans around the world, and especially to the Mexican fans for your unwavering support every day. We’ll meet again soon. And remember… Never give up.”Perez was once nicknamed the “Mexican Minister of Defense” for his support to Verstappen in their first year as teammates in 2021, when he held up rivals and allowed Verstappen to get away.

This year, they’ve typically been so far apart on the track that Perez wasn’t able to provide any meaningful help.Red Bull publicly kept faith with Perez, even handing him a contract extension through 2026 in June, but performances didn’t improve.

Red Bull had been trying to settle Perez with that extension but it “obviously didn’t work,” team principal Christian Horner said this month. On Wednesday, Horner called Perez an “extraordinary team player.”“His five wins, all on street circuits, were also a spectacular mark of his determination to always push to the limit,” Horner added.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Brisbane: Australia pace bowler Mitchell Starc paid a glorious tribute to the just-retired India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, saying he has been “a bit of a thorn” for their side in some of the memorable contests Down Under.

Ashwin, India’s premier off-spinner, on Wednesday surprised the cricketing world by announcing his retirement in the middle of the Test series against Australia.

He retired from the game as the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Tests with 537 scalps from 106 matches, placing him only behind the legendary Anil Kumble (619 wickets).

Ashwin played 23 Tests against Australia from 2011 to 2024, taking 115 scalps, including a 10-wicket and seven five-wicket hauls. He also played a big in India’s stunning series win in 2020-21.

“He (Ashwin) has always been a bit of a thorn in our side over in India and played a part in series here in Australia. It’s been a fantastic career and I’m sure it will be celebrated that way,” Starc told SEN Radio after the third Test here ended in a draw.

“His numbers speak for themselves. He’s been an incredible bowler for India for a long time, over 500 wickets.” Ashwin enjoyed a great rapport with Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon, both of whom having 500-plus wickets.

“He (Ashwin) has got a close working relationship with Nathan (Lyon) and that mutual respect between teams and for someone of his calibre – congratulations on his career. It’s been a fantastic career and I’m sure it will be celebrated that way,” added Starc.

Chennai: A day after announcing his retirement from international cricket midway into the Test series against Australia, India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made a quiet early-morning return to the country here on Thursday.

Ashiwn could be seen was escorted out of the Chennai International Airport by local officials as fans took photographs before he left with his family without talking to the waiting media.

Ashwin on Wednesday announced retirement with immediate effect in the middle of the five-match Test series that is locked 1-1 after three games. He will continue to play club cricket, including the IPL, where he will return to play for Chennai Super Kings next year.

He signed off as the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Tests with 537 scalps in 106 games, placing him only behind the great Anil Kumble (619 wickets) in the overall statistics.

“I do feel there is bit of punch left in me as a cricketer but I would like to showcase that in club level cricket,” Ashwin said in a brief statement during a joint press conference with skipper Rohit Sharma in Brisbane at the end of the drawn third Test there.

Before boarding an evening flight for Chennai, Ashwin also addressed his teammates, assuring them of being there for them as and when they need. “The cricketer in me, the Indian cricketer, international cricketer might have come to an end, but the cricket nut in me will never come to an end,” he told the dressing room in a farewell address shared by the BCCI on social media.

In the limited-overs format, being part of the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy-winning teams would count among the major highlights of his 14-year career.

Ashwin played 116 ODIs for India, claiming 156 wickets, while his 65 T20 International outings yielded 72 scalps. His career began in 2010 in the one-day format before he made his Test debut a year later.

Kohli loses cool at journalist on his arrival at Melbourne airport: Reports

Melbourne: Veteran Indian batter Virat Kohli has reportedly lashed out at the mediaperson on his arrival at Melbourne airport ahead of the Boxing Day Test.

After the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ended in a stalemate at the Gabba, both Australian and Indian teams headed to their next battle in Melbourne for the fourth Test of the series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

On his arrival at the Melbourne airport, Kohli was engaged in a heated exchange with a journalist, as he appeared to be upset by the presence of cameras directed at his family.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, reporters were interviewing Australian pacer Scott Boland, when Virat Kohli and his family were spotted nearby. Cameras shifted focus to Kohli, who appeared displeased with his family being filmed in a public setting and engaged in a heated exchange with a reporter.

A reporter from Channel 7 shed more light on the situation. “It was upon seeing the waiting cameras that Kohli became a little heated over what is largely a misunderstanding when he thought the media was filming him with his children,” he said on 7NEWS.

Kohli then made his position clear. “With my kids I need some privacy, you can’t film without asking me,” he can be heard saying, as quoted by 7News. Later, the India star cleared the air with the media once it was explained his kids in fact weren’t being filmed and he shook hands with the cameraperson before leaving.

Kohli, who started the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia with a century in Perth, has since faltered, accumulating only 21 runs in the last three outings.

India were comprehensively outplayed during the second Test in Adelaide and the third Test at the Gabba ended up in a draw due to rain. The Border-Gavaskar series is currently poised at 1-1, with the crucial fourth Test beginning on December 26 before the series heads to Sydney for the final Test.

Anushka Sharma lauds the legacy of Ravichandran Ashwin

Mumbai: Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma, who has been on an acting sabbatical owing to her motherhood duties, has lauded cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin after he announced his retirement from international cricket.

The actress took to the Stories section of her Instagram, and shared a video from BCCI, and wrote, “A lasting legacy”.

Ravichandran Ashwin was one the formidable forces of the Indian squad during his tenure in international cricket, and is considered to be one of the greatest spinners of all time. He was a part of the 2011 ODI World Cup winning squad and also the 2013 Champions Trophy, where in the 2013 final, he bowled the final over which led to India’s win.

Ravichandran Ashwin also contributed to Indian cricket with his bat as he gave a strong support in the batting department in the lower order.

Ashwin also played the 2nd pink ball test in the ongoing BGT. He was kept out of the team in the 3rd test of the series where India struggled in the 1st innings. However, as the managed to salvage the match following the rain delay, and the match was drawn, Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket, and left for India the same day he made the announcement.

With this move, he contradicted skipper Rohit Sharma, who said that the legendary spinner would leave a day after announcing his retirement.

Ashwin has taken more than 700 wickets in international cricket and more than 500 wickets in Tests, placing him amongst the top ten wicket takers in Tests. He has scored more than 4000 runs in international cricket with 6 centuries and 14 half-centuries in Tests.

He stands next to India’s legendary spinner Anil Kumble. With Ashwin’s departure, team India now has Ravindra Jadeja as a bankable player in that position and the spin department. The 2 upcoming matches will decide the fate of team India and its qualification for WTC.

India’s javelin star Neeraj Chopra shines amid doping crisis

Neeraj Chopra’s silver at the Paris Olympics highlighted his dominance, despite injuries and near-misses. However, India’s athletics still battles doping issues, even as global events bring new opportunities.

India’s javelin star Neeraj Chopra shines amid doping crisis

New Delhi: Gold eluded him and so did the 90m mark but Neeraj Chopra was the undisputed star of Indian athletics for yet another year even as the sport itself continued a long-standing battle with dope cheats while trying to assert itself internationally by bringing big-ticket events to the country.

The 26-year-old javelin throw superstar failed to defend his Olympic gold but became the most successful Indian athlete across disciplines in individual sports with his silver medal in the Paris Games.

He also finished second in the prestigious Diamond League Finale. Creditably, he achieved both the accolades while carrying an injury.

A nagging adductor niggle (a problem related to thigh muscles) troubled him in the run-up to Paris Olympics and a fracture in his left hand hit him ahead of DL Finale. Chopra later said that his injury is fine.

He was beaten for the Olympic gold by Pakistani Arshad Nadeem, who surprised the world with a Games record throw of 92.97m.

In the DL Finale, Anderson Peters of Grenada, who was struggling after back-to-back world crowns in 2019 and 2022, completed his comeback by winning the title.

Lessons for Chopra

Chopra and those who have followed his growth have been obsessed with the 90m mark. There is never an interaction where the Panipat-based lad is not asked when and how he would breach it.

He came reasonably close twice this year, one occasion being the Olympic finals, but it was not to be. India’s golden boy, whose personal best is 89.94m, has gone for a new coach keeping in mind the World Championships next year.

Steering him the coming season would be none other than world record holder and three-time Olympic gold-medallist Jan Zelezny, without doubt the greatest javelin thrower in history.

This was after Chopra parted ways with 75-year-old German biomechanics expert Klaus Bartonietz with whom he was associated for five years, winning a gold and a silver each in the Olympics and the World Championships.

His season still some months away, Chopra is resting and recuperating for now but he is well aware that every move he makes after this break would be closely tracked.

Hall of Shame
The menace of doping did not leave Indian athletics and the country’s credibility of its continued to dwindle internationally.

The World Anti-Doping Agency named India as the second worst after Russia in a 10-year global study of positive doping cases by minors.

Among the stars to let the country down was 2016 Rio Olympian quarter-miler Nirmala Sheoran, who copped an eight-year ban for a second dope offence.

Hammer thrower Rachna Kumari was banned for 12 years for failing multiple dope tests conducted by the international federation’s Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

Distance runner G Lakshmanan (for whereabouts failure) and sprinter Himani Chandel were handed handed two and four-year bans respectively.

Rising javelin thrower DP Manu failed a dope test ahead of Paris Olympics., while former national record holding race walker Bhawna Jat was handed a 16-month ban for ‘whereabouts failure’.

‘Middle distance runner Parvej Khan, who made headlines with his exploits at the NCAA circuit in the USA, also failed a dope test along with Asian Games 4x400m relay gold-winning quarter-miler VK Vismaya.

National Record Breakers

There were some national records broken too. Sable continued to be his own competitor in men’s 3000m steeplechase, clocking 8:09.91sec during the Paris Diamond League for a new national mark.

Akshdeep Singh (men’s 20km race walk), Gulveer Singh (men’s 5,000m and 10000m), KM Deeksha (women’s 1500m), and Abha Khatua (women’s shot put) were also among those who bettered national records in their respective events.

Global events come to India

India will host the World Athletics Continental Tour bronze level meet in Bhubaneswar on August 10, 2025.

The Continental Tour is an annual series of international track and field competitions, which forms the second tier of one-day meetings after the prestigious Diamond League.

This will be the first global athletics meet to be hosted by India after the international permit meets in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the World Half Marathon Championships in 2004.

India has also submitted its bid for the 2028 World U20 Championships.

The country last year expressed its interest to host the 2029 World Championships, and the bidding process is likely to start early 2025. But with issues like doping still a massive problem with no firm solution in sight, it remains to be seen whether the Indian athletics story manages to find success beyond Chopra’s individual brilliance.
