Perth: India stood on the cusp of their biggest victory on Australian soil after reducing the hosts to 227 for 8 at tea on day four of the first Test here on Monday.

Skipper Jasprit Bumrah (3/42) and Mohammed Siraj (3/54) did most of the damage on the fourth day while Washington Sundar and Nitish Reddy played the support act to perfection with a wicket apiece. India had set Australia a mammoth 534-run target on day three.

The in-form Travis Head (89) was dismissed by Bumrah with a delivery that was pitched on length and just kept on climbing as the batter went on a compulsive drive only to edge it behind stumps. Bumrah’s exalted celebration said it all.

Mitchell Marsh (47) was also batting well before Reddy capped a good Test match with a delivery that didn’t give the batter enough room to cut and the inside edge was dragged on to the stumps.

Australia’s most dependable batter in this WTC cycle Alex Carey (30 batting) kept frustrating the visitors but Washington removed Mitchell Starc (12) at stroke of tea to take India closer to a famous win.

In the morning, Siraj bowled a couple of incisive spells to remove the seasoned Usman Khawaja (4) and out-of-form Steven Smith (17). Khawaja’s mistimed pull off Siraj was well taken by IPL’s three million dollar man Rishabh Pant running backwards.

But then India’s new nemesis Head started counter-punching in the presence of Smith, who was trying his best to dig in with desperation to come out of his current rut. However Siraj, who had poor series against New Zealand at home, was all over the Australian batters on a pitch that has ‘misbehaved’ considerably with variable bounce coming into play.

If Khawaja was disposed with a delivery that got big on the southpaw opener, Smith got a delivery that was pitched on perfect length and deviated enough to kiss his outside edge as Pant completed the formalities diving to his right ending a 62-run stand.

Smith and Marnus Labuschagne’s dip in form during this World Test Championship cycle is a major cause of concerns for the hosts. Smith, in fact, did away with his trigger movement towards the off-stump. knowing fully well that he could be a leg before candidate whenever Indian bowlers attack the stumps on a pitch with variable bounce.

Head, who got a beauty from Harshit Rana in the first innings, knew that survival wasn’t an option on a deteriorating track and he didn’t let the loose balls go unpunished as anything pitched up was driven and the short ones were cut disdainfully.

His fifty came with a perfect ramp over the keeper’s head and needed only 63 balls to achieve that feat.

Perth: India recorded a dominant 295-run win in the first Test after dismissing Australia for 238 in their second innings on day four here on Monday. With the thumping win, India lead the five-match series 1-0.

It did not take long for India to complete formalities after reducing Australia to 227 for eight at tea. Chasing 534, the hosts were all out shortly after the break.

Travis Head (89) and Mitchell Marsh (47) showed fight in an otherwise underwhelming batting performance by the hosts. Alex Carey (36) was the last man to be dismissed.

Three wickets fell in the afternoon session after Mohammed Siraj reduced Australia to 104 for five at lunch. India made a remarkable comeback after getting bowled out for 150 on the opening day as Australia were limited to 104 in response.

The second test begins in Adelaide from December 6.

Brief Scores:
India: 150 & 487/6 declared in 134.3 overs Australia: 104 and 238 all out in 58.4 overs (Travis Head 89, Mitchell Marsh 47; Jasprit Bumrah 3/42, Mohammed Siraj 3/51).

India’s point percentage (PCT) rose to 61.11, as Australia slipped to the second spot in the nine-team points table, are still in the race to defend their title with 57.69 PTC. Sri Lanka needs three more wins from their remaining four Tests but their task will be difficult, with two Tests scheduled in South Africa on November 27 and a further two-match series at home against reigning champions Australia in 2025.

Meanwhile, New Zealand are placed fourth with 54.55 PCT and will look to make a push for Lord’s when they engage with England for the three-game series beginning November 28. BGT 2024-25: Bumrah hails India’s grit in 295-run triumph over Australia

Perth: After India secured a comprehensive 295-run victory over Australia to take a 1-0 series lead in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, skipper Jasprit Bumrah said he was proud of how the team bounced back to win the game after being put under pressure.

Bumrah, the chief architect of India’s famous triumph in Perth, picked eight wickets to single-handedly blow away Australia. It includes the match-changing spell of 5-30, as the visitors’ got a vital 46-run lead after being bowled out for 150 on day one and taking three more in the second innings to hand India a monumental overseas Test win, also their third-biggest Test win away from home.

“Very happy. We were put under pressure in the first innings. But the way we came back, I am very proud. We were really well prepared. I was just telling everyone to have faith in their process and ability because over here, we have an opportunity to do something special. On a given day, experience does matter, but if you have faith in your ability you can do something special,” said Bumrah, who got his first Test win as captain after the match ended.

He also paid credit to Yashasvi Jaiswal, whose brilliant 161 helped set up India’s victory, as well as to Virat Kohli, who hit an unbeaten hundred. “We can’t ask for anything else, (from) Jaiswal. That was probably his best innings so far, because he left the ball well. He’s an attacking player but he batted long.”

“I didn’t see Virat out of form – difficult to judge that on difficult pitches. But he was good in the nets. We always enjoy the support from the crowd, when the backing is there we feel good.”

Australia captain Pat Cummins said it was disappointing for him and his team to suffer a crushing defeat from India. “Fairly disappointing. We thought our prep leading in was very good. One of those games where not much went right.”

He also said the 10-day delay between the first and second Test, a pink-ball affair starting on December 6 in Adelaide, ‘is what it is’. “You always want to get back on the horse pretty quickly, but we’ll have a couple of days rest.”

“We didn’t really give ourselves a chance in a couple of different facets. There’s a few different areas we need to clean up. There’s a lot of experience there. I think they’re going about their work pretty well.”

Jeddah: History was made on Day 2 of the IPL 2025 Auction as the 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player to be signed in the league’s history here at the Abady Al Johar Arena on Monday.

Rajasthan Royals, under the leadership of Rahul Dravid, secured his services for a price of Rs 1.10 crore. With a base price of Rs 30 lakh, Delhi Capitals (DC) opened the bidding, followed by RR at Rs 35 lakh. The teams exchanged bids, driving the price past Rs 1 crore. RR prevailed in the history-making moment with a winning bid of Rs 1.10 crore after an intense contest with DC.

Suryavanshi, who hails from Samastipur in Bihar, recently grabbed attention by becoming the youngest batter to score an international century. He achieved this milestone in a Youth Test for India Under-19 against Australia U-19 in Chennai, smashing 104 off 62 balls. His 58-ball century was the fastest by an Indian in Youth Tests and the second-fastest globally.

Earlier this year, Suryavanshi made headlines when he debuted in the Ranji Trophy for Bihar at just 12, becoming the youngest player in India’s premier First-Class tournament.

His acquisition has come as the auction nears its end. Alongside the 13-year-old, Eshan Malinga’s signing was another one that caught the eye as the 23-year-old was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 1.20 crore, starting at a base price of Rs 30 lakh.

Malinga, a Sri Lankan pacer, has played for Jaffna Kings in the LPL and impressed in the Emerging T20 Asia Cup with his new-ball skills. He is also part of the Sri Lanka A programme and trained at the MRF Pace Foundation earlier this year.

ISL 2024-25: Hyderabad FC suffer humiliating 6-0 defeat to Odisha FC

Odisha’s Lalthathanga Khawlhring (centre) celebrates with teammates after scoring against HFC in Hyderabad on Monday.

Hyderabad: Odisha FC delivered a dominant performance to thrash Hyderabad FC 6-0 in an Indian Super League encounter at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday. Goals from Isak Vanlalruatfela, Diego Mauricio, an own goal by HFC goalkeeper Lalbiakhlua Jongte, Mourtada Fall, Lalthathanga Khawlhring, and Rahim Ali highlighted a statement win for the Juggernauts. This marked Odisha’s biggest-ever victory in the league and Hyderabad’s heaviest defeat, a night the home side would want to forget.

Odisha’s head coach Sergio Lobera, known for his tactical brilliance, guided Odisha to an emphatic win after a three-game winless streak. Meanwhile, Hyderabad FC, brimming with confidence after their recent win over Kerala Blasters FC, found themselves completely outplayed.

The Juggernauts opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Isak Vanlalruatfela slotted the ball into the bottom-left corner after a quick throw-in caught the Hyderabad defence off-guard. Hyderabad’s best chance of the first half came in the 21st minute when Stefan Sapic’s header narrowly missed the target.

Odisha doubled their lead in the 30th minute through substitute Diego Mauricio, who replaced the injured Roy Krishna. Jerry Mawihmingthanga outpaced the Hyderabad defence on the right flank, setting up Mauricio, who had ample space to finish inside the box. Hyderabad showed some promise toward the end of the first half, with Abdul Rabeeh’s runs down the right flank causing minor problems. However, their efforts failed to produce a goal, and Odisha went into the break with a 2-0 advantage.

The second half began disastrously for Hyderabad as Jongte’s own goal in the 51st minute extended Odisha’s lead to 3-0. Mawihmingthanga’s touch led to confusion, resulting in Jongte deflecting the ball into his own net.

Despite introducing Cy Goddard, who created a spark by linking up with Allan Paulista, Hyderabad couldn’t find a breakthrough. Edmilson Correia squandered two golden opportunities, missing the target from outside the box and seeing another effort blocked. Odisha added to Hyderabad’s misery in the 70th minute, with centre-back Mourtada Fall left unmarked to head home from a corner. Five minutes later, Mauricio turned provider, assisting Lalthathanga Khawlhring to make it 5-0. The rout was complete in the 89th minute when Rahim Ali coolly slotted in the sixth goal, underscoring Odisha’s title-contender credentials.

The victory lifted Odisha FC from ninth to fourth in the standings with 12 points, Hyderabad, with just seven points, remain 11th, leaving head coach Thangboi Singto to reflect on a night of costly errors and missed opportunities.

Dravid all praise for Suryavanshi, says “he’s got some really good skills’

Jeddah: Rajasthan Royals head coach Rahul Dravid feels that the franchise would be able to provide 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi with “a good environment” for his upcoming stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The eighth standard student from Bihar’s Samastipur was picked up by the franchise for Rs. 1.10 crore, making him the youngest cricketer to earn an IPL contract.

“I think he’s (Suryavanshi) got some really good skills, so we thought it might be a good environment for him to grow in. Vaibhav just came to our trials and we were really happy with what he saw,” said Dravid in an IPL video. Suryavanshi recently became the youngest batter to score an international century, having attained the feat in a Youth Test for India Under-19 versus Australia U-19 in Chennai, making 104 in just 62 deliveries.

He also made his T20 debut for Bihar in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy versus Rajasthan on Saturday, managing a 6-ball 13. Having made an impact in the junior circuit, Suryavanshi has yet to play a meaningful knock in First-Class cricket, as he averages only 10 after five matches and has the best score of 41.

He hails from Samastipur and debuted at the age of 12 years and 284 days versus Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy last season, as he became the youngest player in the competition’s history. Also, Suryavanshi was only 12 years old when playing in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy for Bihar, aggregating nearly 400 runs in just five engagements.
