Biden ‘betrayed’ promise to reassess Saudi ties over Khashoggi murder: Activists

Human rights campaigners say US President Joe Biden has broken his pre-election promise to re-evaluate relations with Saudi Arabia over the state-sponsored murder of insider-turned-critic Jamal Khashoggi.

Khashoggi, a Saudi dissident and Washington Post columnist, was killed and dismembered by Saudi agents in the kingdom’s Istanbul consulate on October 2, 2018.

A subsequent investigation by the US spy agency CIA concluded that the murder had been committed on the orders of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

On his 2020 presidential campaign trail, Biden pledged that his administration would seek to make Saudi Arabia “the pariah that they are” and signaled that “they have to be held accountable” for rights abuses.

He also called for justice for the slain journalist and pledged to “reassess” Washington’s relationship with Riyadh and make sure America “does not check its values at the door to sell arms or buy oil.”

The US president, however, has since performed a volte-face by saying that the United States “will not walk away” from the Middle East and leave a vacuum to be filled by China, Russia, or Iran.

Vali Nasr, professor of international affairs and Middle East studies at Johns Hopkins, said the accusations that the Biden administration had abandoned its stance on Khashoggi’s brutal assassination were justified.

According to The Guardian, Nasr argued that “realpolitik” had driven Washington to deepen ties after China brokered a peace deal between Iran and Saudi Arabia in March.

“The US wants to drive a wedge between China and Saudi Arabia,” Nasr said. “The increased involvement of China in the Persian Gulf has been a concern to Washington, and when the Chinese were able to resolve an intractable problem between the Saudis and Iran, it told Washington that China’s involvement in the region was more than just commercial.”

The US is currently pushing for a mega-deal, which could include a normalization pact between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Under the deal, Riyadh would secure American backing for a civilian nuclear program, as well as access to advanced weapons. In exchange, the kingdom would take major steps to distance itself from China and Israel would allow an independent Palestinian state.

Activists said Biden’s latest diplomatic overtures to Saudi Arabia sully Khashoggi’s memory.

“It is a betrayal not just of Jamal Khashoggi and the millions of people of Saudi Arabia whose lives Prince Mohammed has destroyed, but also of the promises President Biden made to the American people to end support for this autocratic, sociopathic government,” said Sarah Leigh Whitson, executive director of pro-democracy group Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN).

“Now he is going a step further by committing America to unprecedented security guarantees that would obligate American servicemen and women to uphold the rule of this dictator… It’s a sad reflection of a misplaced priority that the US must maintain hegemony and pre-eminence in the Middle East at all costs, which is pathetic because we now live in a multi-polar world.”

On Wednesday, 20 Democratic US senators sent a letter to Biden, saying they were concerned about deepening security ties with Riyadh.

“A high degree of proof would be required to show that a binding defense treaty with Saudi Arabia – an authoritarian regime which regularly undermines US interests in the region, has a deeply concerning human rights record and has pursued an aggressive and reckless foreign policy agenda – aligns with US interests,” the letter read.

US sending warships, fighters to Israel: Pentagon chief

Xinhua reported citing Lloyd Austin’s statement that he had directed the movement of the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, which consists of an aircraft carrier, a guided missile cruiser, and four guided missile destroyers, to the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Pentagon had also “taken steps to augment US Air Force F-35, F-15, F-16, and A-10 fighter aircraft squadrons in the region,” the defense chief added.

He noted that the US government will be rapidly providing the Israeli regime with additional equipment and resources, including munitions.

The first round of US security assistance to Israel “will begin moving” on Sunday “and arriving in the coming days,” Austin said.

Hamas Resistance movement launched the large-scale operation on Saturday with a heavy barrage of rockets in response to the Israeli regime’s desecration of al-Aqsa Mosque and increased settler violence.

Both sides report hundreds of dead and thousands of injured as a result of the escalation of the conflict.

Iran, Iraq call for emergency OIC meeting to help Palestine

The foreign ministers of Iran and Iraq have called for an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to help Palestine amid incessant Israeli acts of aggression.

During a telephone conversation late on Sunday, Iran’s top diplomat Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein exchanged views on the unfolding developments across the occupied Palestinian territories.

The two sides emphasized the need for coordination and coherence among Muslim countries in support of the Palestinian nation, calling on the OIC to convene an emergency meeting in order to review ongoing developments throughout Palestinian lands and back Palestinians and the al-Aqsa Mosque against the Israeli regime’s atrocities.

The Iranian foreign minister also emphasized the legitimate right of Palestinians to stand up against Israeli aggression and occupation.

He described the large-scale surprise attack by members of Hamas and other Gaza-based resistance fighters as a natural response to the ongoing Israeli aggression, its extremist actions against holy Islamic sites, including the al-Aqsa Mosque, and its massacre of Palestinian people, particularly women, children and prisoners.

‘Israeli air raids on Gaza will further complicate situation’

Separately, the Iranian and Hungarian foreign ministers also conferred on the recent developments in West Asia, especially Palestine, and enhancement of mutual ties.

Amir-Abdollahian highlighted Israel’s repeated violations of UN resolutions, continued occupation of Palestinian lands, and unabated expansion of illegal settlements during his telephone conversation with Péter Szijjártó.

The Iranian foreign minister also pointed to the Tel Aviv regime’s continuous breach of international law and insistence on warmongering policies.

Szijjártó, for his part, described dialogue and cooperation as the optimal solution to resolve regional conflicts, saying that Hungary always favors peace and protection of people’s lives in such situations.

He also expressed hope for an end to the conflict, stressing the need for all countries to assume responsibility and contribute their shares to resolving the crisis.

Palestinian medical authorities say more than 400 people have been killed and many more injured as a result of Israeli bombardment across the Gaza Strip.

Hospital officials in the strip have recorded the death of 436 civilians, including 91 children and 61 women, and injury of 2,271 others. Many buildings, homes and public facilities have also been badly damaged due to heavy Israeli bombardments.

Death toll rises in war between Palestinians, Zionists

On Saturday, Palestinian Resistance group Hamas launched a large-scale operation with a heavy barrage of rockets in response to the Israeli regime’s desecration of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and increased settler violence. The Israeli regime’s military forces also announced it was launching Operation ‘Iron Swords’ in retaliation for the attack.

On Sunday night, Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voted to put the regime officially at war.

The following are the latest updates:

Zionists’ death toll from Hamas attack estimated to top 1,000: report

The Zionist death toll from the Hamas’ surprise attack is estimated to top 1,000, Anadolu Agency quoted Zionist media as saying on Monday, adding that there has been no official confirmation so far by the Israeli regime’s officials of the new toll.

The reports added that over 150 Zionists are also believed to be held captive by Hamas.

Palestinian death toll from Israeli regime attack increases to 456

Palestine Red Crescent Society announced on Monday that 456 Palestinians were martyred following the brutal attacks of the Zionist regime.

78 children and 46 women are among the martyrs, according to the reports.

UN Security Council fails to agree on statement on Israeli regime-Hamas war

The UN Security Council has met behind closed doors in an emergency session amid the war between the Israeli regime and Hamas but failed to achieve the unanimity needed for a joint statement, according to Aljazeera.

The council met for about 90 minutes and heard a briefing from the UN Middle East peace envoy Tor Wennesland.

Hamas says detained over 100 Zionists, including military officers

A member of Hamas’ Political Bureau said that more than 100 Zionists, including high-ranking military officials, were captured and moved to the Gaza Strip.

“More than a hundred. Among them are high-ranking officers,” the member of the Political Bureau told Al-Ghad broadcaster when asked about the number of detained Zionists, Sputnik reported.

UNSC meeting over without statement on Gaza events

The UN Security Council did not adopt any statement on the recent escalation of tensions between Palestine and the Israeli regime, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia told reporters on Sunday.

Permanent Representative of Malta to the UN Vanessa Frazier, in turn, said that none of the states proposed a draft statement, sputnik reported.

UAE Permanent Representative to the UN Lana Zaki Nusseibeh added that UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland made a report on the situation in the conflict zone.

Palestinian operation laid bare Israeli regime's weakness

Ziad al-Nakhala made the remarks in a televised speech on Sunday, which was the second day of Operation al-Aqsa Storm, the biggest military operation against the occupying regime in years.

Israeli media outlets say more than 700 Israeli settlers and troops have been killed as a result of the operation and over 2,000 Israelis have been injured. Meanwhile, unofficial estimates indicate that approximately 750 Israeli soldiers and settlers are missing.

“[The number of] the enemy’s prisoners of war, including soldiers and settlers that we have captured, [amounts to] dozens and more. In fact, I can say that their number is far higher than this,” Nakhala said, adding, “The Islamic Jihad alone has more than 30 enemy captives.”

“The enemy’s cabinet should surrender to this fact and [know that] the shortest way to prevent more of its forces from being taken captive or killed is to admit defeat,” the leader of Islamic Jihad said.

His remarks came after on early Sunday, the spokesman for the military wing of the Hamas Resistance movement, which is also based in Gaza, said the number of Israelis taken captive in the ongoing operation against the regime was far more than the “dozens” that had been claimed by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Today, you talked about dozens of prisoners and we reassure you, Netanyahu, that your prisoners are many times more than this number, and you must keep track of your soldiers well,” said Abu Ubaida, the spokesman for al-Qassam Brigades.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Nakhala said the Palestinian operation laid bare the enemy’s weakness and rendered it paralyzed.

“It became obvious [through this operation] that the enemy can be defeated, and in fact, it is broken, and [this is why it] sought the United States’ help from the early hours of the operation,” he said.

The leader of Islamic Jihad noted that the enemy forces’ performance since the beginning of the operation, including their captivity by resistance fighters and abandoning their weapons, “serves as a clear testament to the fact that their army is much weaker than many people in the world believe.”

Addressing the resistance fighters, Nakhala said, “You have gained the world’s attention and hit the global headlines under the toughest circumstances, because you possess the will power and have humiliated an enemy that is armed to the teeth.”

Iran calls on Muslim states to take actions helping Palestine

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the remark in a late Sunday phone call with Taliban Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

Iran calls on Muslim states to take actions helping Palestine

The two sides discussed the latest developments in the Gaza Strip, including Operation al-Aqsa Storm, which is the biggest military operation against the occupying regime in years.

Hamas Resistance movement launched the large-scale operation on Saturday with a heavy barrage of rockets in response to the Israeli regime’s desecration of al-Aqsa Mosque and increased settler violence.

More than 700 Zionist settlers and troops have died as a result of the operation and over 2,000 others have been injured. Zionist media outlets have reported that approximately 750 Zionist soldiers and settlers were missing.

During their phone call, Amir-Abdollahian and Muttaqi discussed the resistance of Palestinian people against the occupation of their country and frequent violations of the al-Aqsa Mosque by Zionist settlers.

Amir-Abdollahian noted that all Muslim countries must be united in their defense of the oppressed people of Palestine and al-Aqsa Mosque.

Muttaqi, for his part, said the Taliban’s foreign ministry is keeping a close watch on the ongoing developments in Gaza and has already issued a strongly-worded statement in support of the Palestinian people and in condemnation of Zionist occupiers.

Amir-Abdollahian also expressed his condolences to Muttaqi over the recent deadly earthquake in Afghanistan, along with sympathy of the Iranian government and nation for the Afghan people.

He added that Iran has already dispatched relief and rescue teams to quake-stricken regions and they arrived there on Sunday evening.

Muttaqi expressed his gratitude for the Iranian people’s help and sympathy and the dispatch of rescue teams from Iran.

Earlier on Sunday, it was announced that the death toll from Afghanistan’s 6.2-magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks has exceeded two thousand.

Afghanistan Disaster Management Authority’s spokesperson Mullah Janan Saiq said more than 2,000 people have died and over 9,000 have been injured.

Noting that the death toll could rise, he added that the tremors caused heavy damage in northwestern Herat and Badghis provinces.

Iran calls on Muslim states to take actions helping Palestine

In a phone call with his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein on Sunday night, Amir-Abdollahian once again stressed the need for the Islamic countries to take measures to assist the Palestinians in their fight against the Israeli regime’s crimes.

Emphasizing the legitimate right of the Palestinian nation to resist aggression and occupation, the top Iranian diplomat said that the anti-Zionist operations of the Palestinian Resistance groups are a natural response to the continuous aggression of the Zionist regime against the Islamic holy sites and the Palestinian nation.

The two sides also discussed the bilateral relations between Tehran and Baghdad during the phone conversation.

Shock and awe continue

More than 24 hours have passed since the operation of the Palestinian resistance and attacks are still ongoing with 100s of rockets being launched at Israeli settlements along with various intrusions that have been made into Israeli settlements.

Major doubts and a state of confusion continue amid Israeli officials.

The resistance began its offensive with a barrage of missiles from Gaza followed by its forces crossing the wall separating the besieged Gaza Strip from the rest of the world.

How Did Hamas Infiltrate the Occupied Palestinian Territories?

Here is what we know so far about the unprecedented Palestinian operation that unfolded on Saturday morning.

7 am: Hamas launches rockets

The operation started just before 7 a.m. local time and came without warning.

The first Israelis that knew about it were by air raid sirens in the southern settlements near Gaza.

Explosions were reported in many settlements across the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories, including Tel Aviv, Ashkelon, Yavne and Kfar Aviv, while large plumes of black smoke were seen rising from a number of smaller Israeli settlements.

Hamas’s top military commander, Mohammad Deif, said the number of missiles fired in the initial phase was 5,000.

7.30 am: Clashes on the Gaza border

Under the cover of rocket fire, Hamas forces crossed into the occupied territories using a number of methods.

These included (for the first time) paragliders as well as boats and also on foot and via jeeps, from nearly two dozen points.

A video showed Hamas fighters flying across the separation wall.

The footage emerged as Hamas released a video showing its fighters practicing using the paragliders in preparation for the operation.

Armed clashes took place between the resistance and the regime’s troops along the separation fence near the southern town of Khan Younis.

Meanwhile, Hamas released footage showing a drone dropping an explosive device that precisely struck its target: an Israeli tank on the other side of the wall.

The sophistication and planning of the operation show a major failure for Israeli intelligence.

8 am: Hamas confirms responsibility

Around 8 a.m. local time, Hamas claimed responsibility and announced it had started a new offensive against Israel.

The group also called on other resistance factions to join the operation.

8.30 am: Israel calls up reservists

Around 30 minutes later, Israeli Minister of War Yoav Gallant approved the call-up of military reservists, while the Palestinian Islamic Jihad said its forces had joined the operation.

Shock and Awe Continues

Meanwhile, the regime’s military confirmed its troops had clashed with Hamas fighters at Erez Crossing – also known as the Beit Hanoun Crossing – at the separation wall between the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories.

They also confirmed that the fighting had taken place at the Israeli Zikim military base to the south of Ashkelon.

The footage then emerged of another Israeli tank on fire at the Gaza Strip fence east of Khan Younis and, later, an Israeli armored vehicle being driven into Shejaiya in Gaza.

Around this time, the Israeli military announced air raids on Gaza and said an “extensive” mobilization process had begun.

Explosions were reported across central Gaza and in Gaza City throughout the day and night.

11 am: Netanyahu says Israel is “at war”

Around 6 p.m. local time, Hamas released new footage

Hamas publishes footage through its war media channel. The footage shows an attack on an Israeli military base. The bodies of dead Israeli troops are seen on the ground.

A cache of weapons is displayed while other sections of the video show Hamas forces dragging Israeli soldiers away from the base.

In other developments.

24 hours after the Hamas-led incursion began, resistance forces were still fighting inside several Israeli settlements.

Israel’s military spoke of battles still taking place in nearly two dozen locations.

The Palestinian resistance says it has taken a large number of Israeli troops and settlers as prisoners of war.

It comes after Israel’s military confirmed settlers and troops have been taken to Gaza.

While the Israeli military has not confirmed exact figures, the Israeli embassy to the United States says over 100 Israeli troops and [settlers] have been kidnapped by Hamas forces.

The unknown number of Israeli soldiers and settlers that have been captured and taken into Gaza is an enormously sensitive issue for Israel.

Top Hamas commander Abu Obeida has said “dozens” of Israeli troops are being held in “safe places” and tunnels in the Gaza Strip.

Another top official, Saleh Arouri, told Al Jazeera that the group is holding “a large number” of Israeli prisoners – enough captives to make Israel free all Palestinians in its jails.

Shock and Awe Continues

Israeli news networks are now reporting that between 500 to 600 Israelis have died as a result of the Hamas incursion yesterday.

Over 2,000 others have been injured as a result of the Palestinian operation, with many in serious condition, Israeli media reports have said.

Israeli air raids have killed at least 370 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, with a further 2,200 injured, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

The death toll is expected to rise on both sides.

According to Israeli news channel N12, 50 Israelis were being held by Hamas forces in the Beeri Kibbutz settlement near Gaza.

An Israeli news outlet spoke to a besieged woman inside the Beeri settlement, who says she has been left without electricity since 12 p.m. on Saturday.

“We have been sitting for 10 hours in different positions,” she says.

“We hope that we will soon know what to do and that we can go out.”

Asked if there were still fighters in the settlement, the woman said, “I believe so”.

“We have very little water,” she added.

Analysts say the interview reflects the plight of two million Palestinians living under siege in the Gaza Strip since 2007, also known as the world’s largest open-air prison.

Social media footage shows a number of Israelis being captured and transferred to the Gaza Strip.

An Israeli military spokesman said that hostage situations were ongoing in some settlements near Gaza throughout the night.

In a massive salvo, Hamas fired 150 missiles toward Tel Aviv, the group’s armed wing has said.

The al-Qassam Brigades said the attack had been launched in response to the Israeli bombardment of a residential tower in Gaza with 100 apartments.

“In response to the bombing of the residential tower in the center of Gaza City…the Al-Qassam Brigades now direct a major missile strike with 150 missiles toward Tel Aviv,” it wrote on social media.

It did not give any further details.

By late Saturday night, the commander of Israel’s Nahal Brigade had been killed, which the regime’s military said occurred during an “encounter with a [resistance fighter]”, in a sign of how intense the battle has become.

Israel’s military spokesman said it is striking targets in Gaza from the air.

Israel’s warplanes have bombed the house of Hamas Gaza chief Yehya al-Sinwar, the resistance group’s media has said.

Al-Sinwar’s home in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip was targeted by the warplanes, it added. It also said no casualties have been reported.

Shock and Awe Continues

According to diplomats, the United Nations Security Council was due to meet on Sunday.

It came after Brazil announced it would convene an emergency session after Hamas launched the biggest attack on Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged “all diplomatic efforts to avoid a wider conflagration,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

“The secretary-general is deeply concerned for the civilian population and urges maximum restraint,” he added.

“Civilians must be respected and protected in accordance with international humanitarian law at all times.”

“We are on the verge of a great victory and clear conquest on the Gaza front,” Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas political bureau chief, said in a televised speech.

“Hamas is fighting the battle with all the resistance factions and the heroes of the Palestinian people. We see scenes of heroism from men who were true to what they promised God and created the gateway to the great victory for our people and our nation.”

“We say to all countries, including our Arab brothers, that this entity, which cannot protect itself in the face of resistance forces, cannot provide you with any protection,” the Hamas chief said, adding, “All the normalization agreements that you signed with that entity cannot resolve this (Palestinian) conflict.”

Many of the Palestinians killed by Israeli air raids are civilians, according to health officials.

A nurse and an ambulance driver are among those killed in Israeli strikes on two hospitals in Gaza, a medical aid group has said.

The attacks injured several people and damaged an oxygen station, Medecins Sans Frontieres said.

“Following the escalation between Israel and Gaza, Israeli forces struck the enclave’s Indonesian hospital and an ambulance in front of Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza,” it said.

The US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has discussed measures to bolster Israel’s security in calls with the regime’s officials, according to the State Department.
