Hyderabad: With the water levels in major reservoirs being significantly lower than last year and the groundwater sources fast depleting, the state is in for a severe drought-like situation that has already impacted its agriculture, water availability, and livelihoods. The situation is critical in over 200 mandals where in the ground water table registered a drop and as a fallout the drinking water issues have taken precedence over irrigation needs.

Peasant community has given up its hope on the standing crops in a withering stage. Giving in to the mounting pressure from the peasant bodies and the opposition parties, the government has tasked the department of disaster management to assess the situation.

In a way the exercise has got underway to identify the areas with acute scarcity conditions for drought declaration as part of measure to mitigate the impact of the water scarcity. It is in the process of gathering information on the rainfall situation since June 2023 and the condition of Yasangi crops.

Govt. for hiring private wells and borewells

The situation is so alarming at places that the, private bore wells and open wells are also being hired to augment the drinking water supply.

Rainfall deviation, prolonged dry spells, crop extent and yields, vegetation indices, soil moisture, water availability in rivers and reservoirs, ground water table are the basic and mandatory indicators taken into consideration for declaration of drought. So far as the crop extent is concerned, it is no way less than the normal.

This time we have crops in some 51 lakh acres against 55 lakh acres last year, according to officials. So far as the rainfall is concerned, despite a five per cent surplus in the current year so far, the state has faced a 56.7 per cent rainfall deficit from October 2023 to March 2024 . It received only 59.2 mm of rain as against expected 136. 9 mm.

Water storage in almost all the reservoirs in the Krishna basin and Godavari basin are touching the minimum draw down levels (MDDL). The ground water situation is also appalling with over 201 revenue mandals, accounting for nearly 33 per cent of the total area in State have experienced a big drop in the table. State is however yet to conduct on- ground sample surveys to determine the intensity of drought conditions.

As the first step in the direction of addressing the drinking water scarcity, the government has issued instructions to the administration in the districts to hire the irrigation wells where ever possible immediately after harvest of Yesangi and make use of them to augment the drinking water supply. The government had sanctioned some Rs 100 crore to address the water scarcity issues in all the districts so far.

The prevailing conditions in some of the districts was a grim reminder of the November 2015 when as many as 231 mandals were declared drought hit in the state. The state had requested for a financial assistance of Rs 1000 crore from the Centre to mitigate the situation. The previous government had responded with immediate relief measures supporting the affected communities. Timely response is crucial in drought relief.

Elephant attacks expose Telangana forest department’s poor preparedness

Hyderabad: The Telangana forest department’s lack of foresight and poor preparedness resulted in loss of two lives. The herd of nearly 70 to 75 elephants has been moving along the River Pranahita since last few weeks on the Maharashtra end.

However, the State forest department did not anticipate the possibilities of elephants crossing the river and entering the Telangana region.

This apart, the field staff in Kumram Bheem Asifabad is not equipped with night vision cameras, night drone and other equipment that could help them track the movement of wild animals more effectively.

There have been reports that the elephant had attacked a few people in Chattisghar in the past. Though, it is not confirmed whether it is the same elephant but it entered Gadchiroli forests in Maharashtra and crossed the River Pranahita to enter River Pranahita.

After the Wednesday and Thursday attacks, the forest department deployed a drone team, including night vision camera to track the elephant’s movement. This apart, a Hulla party (professionals used to chase away elephant by using traditional methods of carrying flaming torch and beating drums) is also being deployed from Maharashtra.

The six-member team was expected to arrive on Thursday night or early Friday. It would soon swing into action, said a senior official.

Further, the elephant is travelling back towards Maharashtra and 15 teams were tracking its movement. Elephants prefer to walk in the nights and they can easily cover 15 to 20 kms a night. At this rate, there was every possibility of the elephant to cross the River Pranahita by Friday night or Saturday, provided it was not disturbed by local villagers, the official said.

Water, power supply take centre stage in LS poll discussions

Hyderabad: As Telangana braces for the Lok Sabha elections on May 13, the looming agrarian crisis due to lack of water and power supply, threatens to sway the political scenario in Telangana.

While the ruling Congress is struggling to address the issue, the main opposition BRS is going all guns blazing against the former over its inefficiency to resolve the pressing needs of people compared to the previous K Chandrashekhar Rao government.

With the agriculture department officials yet to quantify the losses suffered by farmers, the impact of this crisis on voters cannot be overstated.

Except for blaming the nature and holding the previous BRS government over the sinking of piers at Medigadda barrage of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, the Congress-led government could not initiate any concrete measures to address the water crisis before the election code came into force.

Similar situation prevails with regard to power crisis as power usage surged in proportion to rising mercury levels since March. However, the main opposition BRS seized upon the prevailing drought conditions as a strong weapon against the ruling party.

Spearheaded by former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, the BRS accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and the Congress of mismanaging water and power resources, attributing the drought not solely to natural causes, but also to failed Congress policies.

Chandrashekhar Rao’s assertive stance during his recent visit to Nalgonda, Suryapet and Jangaon districts caused a stir within the ruling party, prompting heated exchanges over responsibility for the crisis.

Further, the pumping of water from Kaleshwaram project using Gayatri and Nandi pumphouses have further strengthened the BRS chief’s narrative, kickstarting a fresh discussion among people including social media.

His scheduled visit to Karimnagar and Rajanna Siricilla districts on Friday, is expected to intensify the unrest among people further.

The active campaigning of BRS working president KT Rama Rao, former Minister T Harish Rao and other senior leaders over negligence of the State government especially Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has now pushed the ruling Congress into troubled waters as many Congress leaders facing not just physical heat due to summer, but also verbal heat from the voters questioning about the water and power crisis repeatedly.

The attempts of the Congress leaders including Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Ministers to counter the allegations and blame the previous BRS government appears to have only backfired.

With no tangible contingency measures initiated to mitigate the situation at the ground level, the water and power supply at the forefront of voters’ concerns.

The outcome of the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana hangs in the balance, contingent upon how effectively each party navigates the turbulent waters of public sentiment and effective policy implementation.

Congress Medak candidate Neelam Madhu faces embarrassing moment

Hyderabad: Congress party Medak Lok Sabha constituency candidate Neelam Madhu faced embarrassing moments when a Congress leader’s wife vented her ire against him over his past comments.

All this happened in the presence of Forest Minister Konda Surekha.

The Minister had visited Patancheru Assembly constituency Congress candidate Kata Srinivas Goud’s residence on Wednesday.

Srinivas Goud and his wife Sudha Rani welcomed the Minister into their house and Medak candidate Neelam Madhu accompanied her.

After felicitating the Minister, Sudha Rani vented her ire against Neelam Madhu over his comments on Kata Srinivas Goud during the recent Assembly elections campaign.

It may be recalled that Kata Srinivas Goud was contesting the Patancheru assembly constituency elections representing the Congress and Neelam Madhu entered the fray as BSP candidate after being denied ticket by the Congress.

“In fact, I wanted to slap him hard for his comments,” said Sudha Rani to the Minister while Neelam Madhu stood calm next to the Minister.

Soon after he switched loyalties to the Congress, the party leadership offered him a ticket to contest from the Medak Lok Sabha constituency.

The videos of Sudha Rani bursting out in anger before the Minister have gone viral on social media platforms.

Elect BRS LS candidates for Telangana welfare: Nama Nageswara Rao

Elect BRS LS candidates for Telangana welfare: Nama Nageswara Rao

Kothagudem: BRS Khammam Lok Sabha candidate Nama Nageswara Rao said that only the victory of the BRS party candidates in parliament elections would benefit the people of Telangana state.

He addressed party workers at preparatory meetings for the parliamentary elections held at Aswaraopet and at Kothagudem in the district on Thursday.

He asked the party leaders and cadres to make collective efforts for the BRS victory in Lok Sabha polls. Only the BRS MPs fought for the rights of the people of Telangana in the parliament while the MPs who won from BJP and Congress in the State never spoke in Parliament for the funds and projects that were due to Telangana, Nageswara Rao said.

Congress party cheated people by not implementing the six guarantees after winning the Assembly elections.

Most of the areas in the erstwhile Khammam district, paddy and maize crops have dried up due to lack of irrigation water and farmers suffered huge losses and there was no water even for drinking in some parts of the Telangana State, he complained.

Crops in about 15 lakh acres were damaged. Within the hundred days of the Congress rule, all sections including the farmers were facing difficulties. People were happy during the BRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao’s 10-year rule and Telangana was at the forefront of development.

The welfare schemes implemented during the BRS regime in Telangana were unmatched in any other State in India. The BRS government schemes have reached every doorstep and the Centre acknowledged the fact that only Telangana provided drinking water to every house.

Chandrashekhar Rao was the only leader who stood by the farmers and gave them what they wanted. The party cadres have to go door to door explaining the development works and welfare schemes implemented during the BRS’s rule and also explain to the public how the Congress party duped them, Nageswara Rao suggested.

Kumram Bheem Asifabad: Kawal Tiger Reserve Field Director S Shantharam said that efforts were being made to drive the rogue elephant to Maharashtra using various means. Speaking to newsmen along with District Forest Officer Neeraj Kumar Tebriwal on Thursday at Bejjur, Shantharam said that the male elephant belonging to Odisha living lonely since four years entered the Telangana forest areas after crossing Pranahita river. He said the movement of the tusker was being tracked by around 70 staffers of the forest department round the clock. Villagers were advised not to venture outdoors in wake of movement of the rogue tusker which trampled two farmers in a gap of 24 hours.

He said Section 144 of CrPC was imposed in Chintalamanepalli, Bejjur, Penchikalpet and Dahegaon mandals to prevent human loss. Two drone cameras were already being used to track the movement of the tusker, while thermal drones were being brought from Hyderabad to trace the pachyderm at night. The elephant was walking briskly, covering a distance of anywhere between 20 to 30 kms a day.

He said a team with expertise in chasing the elephants was being summoned from Maharashtra. The team going to be roped in to make efforts to send away the wild animal, predicted that the elephant would step out of the borders of Telangana and go back to Maharashtra by crossing Penganga river by Thursday night. People of the villages likely to be strayed by the elephant were alerted.

He added that the food including sugarcane and fruits were kept ready in Karjelli forest range, anticipating the animal’s return on a path which moved towards Kondapalli where it trampled to death Karu Posham (60), early on Thursday morning after killing Alluri Shankar (50) at Burepalli village in Chintalamanepalli village on Wednesday afternoon.

Yennam Srinivas Reddy says KTR threatening leaders through legal notices

Hyderabad: Mahabubnagar MLA Yennam Srinivas Reddy charged that BRS working president KT Rama Rao was threatening leaders through legal notices over phone tapping allegations.

The BRS working president served legal notices to the Mahabubnagar MLA, Forest Minister Konda Surekha and KK Mahender Reddy for falsely accusing him of being involved in phone tapping episode. Speaking to media persons here on Thursday, Yennam Srinivas Reddy said he too had doubts over his phone being tapped.

Accordingly, a formal complaint was lodged with DGP Ravi Gupta and the police were investigating into different allegations as there were evidences, he charged.

“Infact, KT Rama Rao should be served notices for charging that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had offered Rs.2,500 crore to New Delhi,” Srinivas Reddy said.

He also reminded that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was disqualified by Allahabad High Court in the past for misusing official machinery and for using official car during elections.

“There are allegations that BRS party had used task force vehicles for distributing money. All the BRS MLAs are eligible for disqualification and should be disqualified for misusing government machinery,” Srinivas Reddy demanded.
