Karimnagar: Testing kits to test water quality in rural areas

Karimnagar: In order to supply safe and protected drinking water to the people in rural areas, the Mission Bhagiratha wing has begun efforts and are supplying water testing kits to gram panchayats.

Chloroscope (Chlorine test) kits are being supplied to each and every gram panchayat to test the quality of water before supplying it to people.

Twenty years ago, the then government had supplied water quality testing kits to gram panchayats. However, they went waste as bill collectors and staffers did not utilize them due to lack of awareness.

Now, the government has decided to test water quality following the incidents of leakages in pipelines and water contamination due to unhygienic conditions in water tanks that are reported frequently, Mission Bhagiratha department sources said.

The sources said people were infected by diseases as water was now being supplied directly from hand-pumps and borewells. Moreover, there was a possibility for water contamination following the depletion of the groundwater table in the summer season.

So, the government has decided to test the quality of water by using testing kits. Besides supplying kits, training is also being given to gram panchayat staff to educate them about the operation of kits. If there is any difference in the quality of water, they would alert Mission Bhagiratha officials.

According to department statistics, a total of 1,212 kits will be distributed to different gram panchayats of Karimnagar-301, Jagtial-387, Peddapalli-266 and Rajanna-Sircilla-258. While some of them have already been handed over, a few of them are to be distributed soon.

Mission Bhagiratha officials said that in order to supply safe drinking water to people, water testing kits are being supplied to gram panchayats besides educating the staff about the utilization of kits. They are also monitoring the testing process.

Kumram Bheem Asifabad: Forest officials and voluntary organisations believe that the region will have to witness a new threat to humans – the menace of wild elephants – in future in addition to the existing conflict with other wild animals.

A 25 to 30-year-old male elephant which strayed into Telangana recently from Maharashtra after getting separated from its herd returned to the neighboring State on Saturday. It trampled two farmers to death at Burepalli village in Chintalamanepalli mandal and Kondapalli in Penchikalpet in Kaghaznagar forest division in its three-day long stay. It is currently taking shelter in Aheri forest range of Maharashtra.

“Once the tusker has entered a forest, it may come to the forests again alone or with its herd. However, we are preparing our staffers to tackle the menace of the elephant by conducting training classes and boosting infrastructure. Similarly, awareness is going to be created among the public, besides carrying out extensive publicity over the precautions,” Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Mohan Chandra Pargaien told ‘Telangana Today.’

Forest officials anticipate that the landscape of Kumram Bheem Asifabad district is likely to see migration of elephants from Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh in coming years, considering the forests are for elephants. They reasoned that the habitat of the elephants was being destroyed by mining activities in the two states, forcing them to explore the surrounding forests.

Forest officials were planning to conduct capacity building programmes for their field staffers by roping in experts. They are planning to procure infrastructure such as thermal drones, torches, public address systems and chasing teams as part of the preparedness. They will initially organise training sessions for IFS officers posted in Kawal Tiger Reserve before training officials in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district.

Meanwhile, the officials said that a report would be submitted to the Centre for consideration of provision of required infrastructure and funds to tackle the movement of elephants in this region, a new menace for the authorities and the locals as well.

Digital survey of crops on to create a database of crops in TS

Siddipet: The State government is carrying out a digital crop survey across 17 districts in Telangana, as part of which Agriculture Extension Officers in one mandal in each of these districts will photograph all the crops sown in their respective mandals in different directions.

The AEOs will upload 20,000 to 30,000 pictures from each of these mandals covering all the fields. While the State government has selected Narayanraopet mandal in Siddipet district, it selected Kondapur mandal in Sangareddy district for the digital survey.

Agriculture department officials said the government was on the job to create a single and verified source of the data on crop sown areas in the State. It will be useful for accurate crop area estimation and making several farm-centric policies and solutions in the days to come.

Meanwhile, the government was also planning to take up satellite surveys of crops after the completion of these digital surveys across these 17 mandals.

The artificial intelligence technology used by the State government will recognise the crops based on the photographs already uploaded by the agriculture officials after the satellites capture the pictures on the ground during both seasons every year.

A similar survey was carried out during the Vanakalam period too in the same 17 mandals. The photographs of Vanakalam crops were also uploaded then.

Since the farmers would cultivate different crops during Yasangi and Vanakalam, the agriculture department had carried out separate surveys during Vanakalam and Yasangi.

The officials said that the satellite could not differentiate the crops that were closely similar like Jowar-Maiz and Green Gram-Black gram. When agriculture officials upload these pictures into the database, that would help the satellite identify the crop’s sown area accurately.

The survey was launched in February, they have completed more than 90 per cent of their job so far. Once they create enough databases, the government will carry out only satellite-based surveys putting a full stop to age-old manual surveys.
