Karimnagar: While a majority of water bodies in the State have dried up, a village tank in the district is turning out to be the odd one with brimming water levels in midsummer.
Even as crops are withering and streams have dried up elsewhere in the State, the situation is different in Mutharam and its surrounding villages of Shankarapatnam mandal since the local tank, Ramasamudram Cheruvu has plenty of water, thanks to the Mission Kakatiya programme under which the tank was revived in 2018.
Developed during the Nizam’s era, the tank was rejuvenated spending.Rs 83 lakh as part of the previous BRS government’s Mission Kakatiya programme in 2018.
The Kakatiya canal is the main water source for the tank, which will be filled within a few days if shutters of the canal are opened at Somaram village.
Besides the Kakatiya canal, it has a huge catchment area right from Mandapuram and Husnabad of Siddipet district and remains full with water throughout the year.
Agricultural wells and borewells of surrounding areas also have abundant water since the tank is always filled with water.
The Ramasamudram Cheruvu recently received good inflows as water from the Lower Manair Dam was released through the Kakatiya canal to protect standing crops.
Spread across 250 acres, the tank is fulfilling the water needs of a variety of crops being sowed in 450 acres in Mutharam and Eradapalli villages. Speaking to Telangana Today, former sarpanch Panjala Rajaiah said they never faced water problems since adequate water would be available in the tank.
Earlier, water used to flow off without being utilized, but not a single drop of water was going waste after the revival job done under Mission Kakatiya, he said.
Besides removing silt, the tank’s two kilometre-bund was also strengthened. Two weirs of the tank were also repaired.
In order to arrest leakages, a one feet wall was also constructed inside the tank. Rajaiah said the Nizam had developed the tank by releasing a grant of Rs.263. Local people had then participated in tank digging works under a food for work programme, he added.

Kothagudem: The Maoist-affected remote Cherla mandal, located on Telangana-Chhattisgarh borders, in Kothagudem district has come under strict CCTV surveillance. As it is a common notion that a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera equals 100 police men, the Telangana police have been giving importance to installing video surveillance systems in all police stations.
The district police, who are constantly engaged in checking Maoist movements in agency villages, have set up a command control which is connected to as many as 54 CCTV cameras at Cherla police station.
The surveillance system has been installed as part of ‘Nenu Saitham’ initiative wherein the businessmen and the public of Cherla mandal have voluntarily contributed Rs.9.50 lakh helping the Cherla police to install CCTV cameras in their respective areas. The command control was inaugurated by Superintendent of Police B Rohith Raju along with additional SP (Operations) T Sai Manohar. The SP said CCTV cameras play a key role in crime control and thanked the businessmen and public for their contribution.
Speaking to Telangana Today, Cherla Inspector of Police Raju Verma said the entire mandal is brought under the video surveillance as CCTV cameras have been installed at all key entry and exit points. The IP (Internet Protocol) CCTV cameras would not only help to monitor and check movements of Maoists but also useful in probing into crimes and accidents, he said. It might be noted that Telangana police for quite a while are using facial recognition system (FRT) to identify criminals or suspects.
According to power officials, the power consumption in the Greater Hyderabad region had already touched 79 million units and was likely to touch 90 MU in the coming days

Hyderabad: Anticipating an increase in power consumption in the Greater Hyderabad region in the coming days, the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) has started enhancing the capacity of transformers from 5 MVA (megavolt-amperes) to 8 MVA and 12.5 MVA in the Greater Hyderabad limits to avoid power outages and load shedding.
According to power officials, the power consumption in the Greater Hyderabad region had already touched 79 million units and was likely to touch 90 MU in the coming days, hence to avoid load shedding, they have started enhancing the capacity of transformers.
“As power consumption increases over time, the existing 5 MVA transformers may no longer meet the demand. Upgrading to an 8 MVA capacity allows the system to handle higher loads efficiently,” the officials explained.
If the load on the power grid or distribution network has significantly increased, upgrading the transformers ensures reliable power supply without overloading the system, the officials said.
“Transformers play a crucial role in voltage regulation. By upgrading to an 8 MVA transformer, voltage fluctuations can be better managed, ensuring stable power delivery,” officials said.
Stating that larger transformers were often more efficient due to reduced losses, the officials said an 8 MVA transformer would have better efficiency compared to a 5 MVA one, especially under heavy loads.
Upgrading from 5 MVA to 8 MVA allows for better load management, improved efficiency, and enhanced reliability in power distribution systems, they said.
The SPDCL authorities have already upgraded 5 MVA transformers to 8 MVA at Narapally, Ibrahimbagh and Kokapet substations and a new 8 MVA transformer was set up at Kandikal substation.
Similarly 8 MVA transformer was upgraded to 12.5 MVA at Jalpally and a new 12.5 MVA transformer was set up at Somasila substation.
Apart from this, the power authorities are conducting tong tester readings of the distribution transformers during peak hours and balancing the load.
In order to maintain the power supply uninterrupted during the summer season, the SPDCL authorities have added 619 distribution transformers of 100 KVA t, 752 transformers of 160 KVA, 110 transformers of 315 KVA and 13 distribution transformers of 500 KVA capacity in the Greater Hyderabad and Rangareddy district.
There are about 1,47,192 distribution transformers in the Greater Hyderabad region.
