Tata Group shares surge up to 10%, led by gains in Tata Chemicals, Tata Teleservices

New Delhi: Shares of Tata Group companies on Thursday rose up to 10 per cent, with Tata Chemicals and Tata Teleservices among the major gainers.

Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata, who played a key role in transforming the group into a global conglomerate, passed away late on Wednesday. He was 86.

“Investors can pay tribute to Ratan Tata and the great corporate empire he built by buying stocks like TCS, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Tata Consumer and Indian Hotels.

“Ratan Tata, while pursuing the group’s growth, contributed substantially to India’s growth and millions of ordinary investors gained from the great man’s vision,” V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said.

The stock of Tata Investment Corporation soared 10.47 per cent to trade at Rs 7,235.80 apiece, Tata Chemicals climbed 6.26 per cent to Rs 1,174.85, Tata Teleservices Maharashtra jumped 5.84 per cent to Rs 83.77, Tata Elxsi rose 3.37 per cent to Rs 7,867.80, Tata Power went up 2.56 per cent to Rs 472.70 on the BSE.

Also, shares of Tata Technologies, Rallis India, Nelco, Tejas Networks, TajGVK Hotels & Resorts, and Indian Hotels & Company also rose on the bourse.

In addition, the scrip of Tata Steel rose 0.91 per cent, Tata Communications (0.84 per cent), Tata Consultancy Services (0.21 per cent), Tata Consumer Products (0.17 per cent), Voltas (0.24 per cent) and Automotive Stamplings & Assemblies (0.23 per cent) on the BSE.

The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 198.28 points, or 0.24 per cent, to 81,665.38 in the mid-session trade on Thursday.

Investors should learn from the growth of the Tata empire that a long-term investment horizon is required to really participate in the wealth creation that happens through the capital market. In a bull market like the present one, there will always be valuation concerns, Vijayakumar added.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has cancelled a press conference scheduled on Thursday evening to announce its second quarter performance, company officials said.

The press conference was originally scheduled at 1730 hours on Thursday.

As originally scheduled, TCS will inform the exchanges about its July-September performance after the board meeting, the officials said.

A scheduled call with analysts at 7 pm will be held as per schedule, they said.

The last rites of Ratan Tata, who passed away late on Wednesday evening, are scheduled to take place after 4 pm at central Mumbai’s Worli on Thursday.

Tata breathed his last on Wednesday evening at a city hospital.

“I watched Pushpa 2 and during those three hours, many other better things could have been done. Save for history and Telangana related movies, I will not watch Telugu movies anymore,” Komatireddy Venkat Reddy further said, adding youngsters were getting spoiled by the movie.

Speaking to the media after visiting the family of Sri Tej, who was injured in the theatre tragedy, the Minister reiterated what he said in the Assembly earlier, that the State government no more permit benefit shows and special screenings of movies. Stating that film actors should work as per law and if police denies permission, they should not attend public programmes and other events, he also said actors should refrain from travelling in open top cars.

Haiti gang massacres at least 110 people in Cite Soleil: Rights group

At least 110 people were killed over the weekend in Haiti’s Cite Soleil slum when a gang leader targeted elderly people he suspected of causing his child’s illness through witchcraft, the National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH) said on Sunday.

All the victims were aged over 60, the rights group said.

Wharf Jeremie gang leader Monel “Mikano” Felix ordered the massacre after his child became sick, RNDDH said, saying that he sought advice from a Voodoo priest who accused elderly people in the area of harming the child through witchcraft.

Gang members killed at least 60 people on Friday and 50 on Saturday using machetes and knives, it said.

Cite Soleil, a densely populated slum by the port of the capital Port-au-Prince, is among the poorest and most violent areas of Haiti.

Tight gang control, including the restriction of mobile phone use, has limited residents’ ability to share information about the massacre.

Felix, who heads the Wharf Jeremie gang, was in 2022 banned from entering neighboring Dominican Republic.

Felix’s child died on Saturday afternoon, RNDDH said.

The United Nations in October estimated that Felix’s gang numbered some 300 people and also operated around nearby Fort Dimanche and La Saline.

La Saline was in November 2018 the site of the massacre of at least 71 civilians, while hundreds of homes were set on fire.

Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier, the face of the Viv Ansanm alliance of gangs across Port-au-Prince, has been sanctioned by the United Nations on charges of planning the La Saline massacre while he was still a police officer, among other crimes.

In October, at least 115 people were massacred in Pont-Sonde, a town in Haiti’s breadbasket  Artibonite region, in

what the Gran Grif gang said was retaliation for residents working with a self-defense group hindering their road toll operations.

The government, wracked by political infighting, has struggled to contain armed gangs’ growing power in and around the capital.

Haitian authorities had in 2022 requested international security support for local police, but the mission – based on voluntary contributions – that the United Nations approved in 2023 has only partially deployed and is severely under-resourced.

Haitian leaders have since called for the mission to be converted into a UN peacekeeping force to ensure it is better supplied, but the plan remains stalled.

Debt traps push Sircilla weavers to suicides

Loans borrowed for various needs are being cited as the main reasons for almost all the suicides so far. Unable to clear debts, weavers are taking the extreme step

Debt traps push Sircilla weavers to suicides

Weavers, who used to get adequate work during previous BRS regime, are unable to get employment
due to lack of government orders including Bathukamma sarees.

Rajanna-Sircilla: Suicide deaths of weavers are continuing in Sircilla textile town. The suicides, which began in January this year after the change of government in the State, saw the latest additions on Friday and Saturday.

Loans borrowed for various needs are being cited as the main reasons for almost all the suicides so far. Unable to clear debts, weavers are taking the extreme step. However, while weaving community is attributing suicides to lack of employment, officials claim all of them were not genuine.

Weavers, who used to get adequate work during the previous BRS government’s tenure, are unable to get employment due to lack of government orders such as Bathukamma sarees and others. As a result, a majority of the weavers as well workers in allied sectors have lost employment opportunities during the last one year. As a result, they are borrowing money to run their families, healthcare and other needs. This has become an additional burden for weavers, who were already reeling under financial troubles.

13 weavers have ended their lives since January this year in Sircilla alone. While seven died up to June, the remaining five ended their lives after August. In the last 24 hours, two people have ended their lives. While Dusa Ganesh ended his life on Friday, Nakka Srinivas was found hanging on Saturday.

However, out of 11 counted by the government, compensation was provided to only two weavers – Bairi Amar (Rs.5 lakh) and Erram Komuraiah (Rs.2 lakh). Amar and his wife Sravanthi ended their lives by hanging in their Venkampet residence on November 9. Amar, who used to run powerlooms besides engaging in small businesses, sold his looms four months before as there was no work during the last seven months. Borrowing some amount, he started a bedsheet and cover manufacturing units. However, he ended up suffering losses. Unable to clear their debts, the couple died by suicide.

Komuraiah had borrowed Rs 10 lakh for the construction of his house and for the weddings of his children. Unable to clear the subsequent financial burden, he ended his life on November 13.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Assistant Director, Handlooms and Textile, M Sagar informed that a three-men committee comprising of Revenue Divisional Officer, AD Handloom and Textiles and Sub-Divisional Police (DSP) was recommending names to the government for compensation after finalizing the genuineness of suicides. So far, compensation was provided to Amar and Komuraiah.

Commenting on the deaths of Ganesh and Srinivas, he said the official opinion was that they were not “genuine” weaver suicides. Ganesh, who had family disputes, had not attended work though his employer asked him to join duty. He borrowed money from a private finance company, who mounted pressure on him to clear debts. Meanwhile, Srinivas was staying away from the weaving profession since 2020 and was engaged in different works including as an autorickshaw driver. Being in the weaving profession was a must to recommend the names for compensation, he said.
