Hyderabad: City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has urged citizens, particularly youngsters and parents, to avoid midnight birthday celebrations and cake-cutting events on Tank Bund, major roads, lake areas and public parks, warning that such activities could lead to fatal accidents.
Recalling a recent tragic road accident on Tank Bund around 2 am, Sajjanar said a family had arrived at the location to celebrate a six-year-old girl’s birthday when the accident claimed the lives of the child and a family member on the same day.
Police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to hospital, but their efforts to save them proved unsuccessful.
The Commissioner said he had inspected the accident site along with senior police officials and held a comprehensive review with various government departments to identify measures to prevent similar incidents.
He stressed that birthdays should be celebrated at home or other safe venues, rather than on public roads late at night. “With traffic often moving at high speeds during the early hours, taking children onto roads for celebrations poses serious risks,” he pointed out.
Sajjanar also said that birthday celebrations on Tank Bund are prohibited under existing rules, citing earlier directions issued by the GHMC.
However, despite regular police efforts to disperse groups gathering at the location, some people continue to return during midnight hours.
Urging the public not to risk precious lives for momentary enjoyment, the commissioner appealed to citizens to avoid late-night celebrations at Tank Bund, lakes and other public places.
