Hyderabad: A family’s birthday celebration ended in horror on Tank Bund on Sunday night when a speeding lorry ploughed into them as they crossed the road to cut a cake, killing a six-year-old girl and her 41-year-old relative.

The victims were identified as Sarakshi (6) and Viswanath alias Vishwanth (41), both residents of Jonnabanda in Old Alwal.

According to police, Sarakshi’s family had come to the city on Sunday to celebrate her birthday. After watching a film at PVR in Kukatpally, they decided to cut a cake at Tank Bund.

“The family parked their car near the Maqdoom Mohiuddin statue and walked towards Hussainsagar to cut the cake. As they were crossing the road, a speeding lorry coming from the Secunderabad side hit them,” the police said.

Sarakshi suffered severe injuries and died on the spot. Viswanath was critically injured and shifted to Gandhi Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.

The police registered a case and launched an investigation into the accident.
