Hyderabad: A large gig and delivery workforce spends hours on city roads picking up and delivering food, vegetables, groceries and other items. Their entire work schedule is spent moving from one street to another, with little respite in between.
Offering gig and delivery workers a place to take a break from their running around, freshen up and use restroom facilities, Amazon India has set up a facility named Ashray Centre in the city. In coordination with the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC), the facility was inaugurated at Kondapur and aims to provide rest and support facilities for gig and delivery workers.
This is the first of five Ashray centres planned in high-footfall areas across Hyderabad and Amazon’s first such collaboration with the State government. Amazon will fund the centres in areas including Kondapur, Bharathinagar and Patancheru. While the Kondapur centre has become the first to be operational, the remaining four are planned by the end of this year.
Open to gig and delivery workers from all companies and platforms, the air-conditioned centre provides seating, drinking water, electrolytes, mobile phone charging points, clean washrooms, first-aid kits and resting space.
The initiative seeks to provide convenient rest facilities for workers who spend long hours travelling across the city and have limited opportunities to stop between deliveries. It also aims to improve working conditions and create a more worker-friendly and inclusive urban environment.
CMC Commissioner G Srijana said, “Delivery drivers spend much of their day on the move, and having dedicated spaces to rest, recharge and access essential facilities can make a meaningful difference to their everyday experience.”
Amazon India Director-Operations Salim Memon said, “Ashray was based on the principle that every delivery driver should have access to a clean and comfortable place to rest during the working day.”
