The HMWSSB has urged RWAs operating private sewage treatment plants in Hyderabad to register by October 1 as part of an initiative to promote treated wastewater use. The move will create a network of certified suppliers for non-potable applications.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) launched an initiative to promote treated wastewater use and strengthen water conservation across its jurisdiction. The RWAs running private sewage treatment plants (STPs) have been urged to register by October 1.
The Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) area has several STPs operated by government bodies, private residential colonies and industries. The HMWSSB will establish a framework to supply treated water for non-potable uses, including gardening, industrial operations, cleaning and construction, a press release said.
Private STPs will be surveyed, geo-tagged and added to HMWSSB database. Details including treatment capacity, daily output and quality parameters such as chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, pH and total suspended solids will be recorded, it added.
Interested STPs will be registered as certified treated-water suppliers and inspected regularly for compliance with prescribed quality standards. Registered plants can update real-time treated-water availability through an online portal, helping distribute it to nearby users, HMWSSB made an appeal.
