Several protesters were seen being arrested in Manhattan, New York City on Saturday during clashes with the NYPD at a pro-Palestinian rally.
Clashes erupted after police were trying to respond to a bomb threat in Times Square, where protesters had reportedly blocked their Emergency Service Unit (ESU) vehicle from moving.
An Uber driver had reported finding a grenade in their vehicle after dropping off a passenger. According to the bomb squad, the object found was an inactive novelty grenade.
NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry commented on the incident in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, where he wrote “Happy Saturday to all! Except the people who thought it was a good idea to block an NYPD ESU vehicle on the way to a bomb threat call. They will be spending their Saturday where they belong – in jail!”
Several protesters have been taken into custody, according to NYPD officials.
Protests calling for a ceasefire in the fighting between Israel and Hamas have taken place nationwide, as the war continues for its fifth month.
