Hyderabad: V. Sriram Jayin of Visakhapatnam won a gold medal and earned the FIDE Master title in the under-14 age group category of the Asian-plus Age Group Chess Championship in Singapore.
Sriram from Andhra Pradesh, who entered the tournament as the 16th seed, scored 7.5 points from nine rounds, with his ELO rating also increasing by 136.8 points.
To his credit, Sriram, who is coached by M. Nikhil, registered impressive wins against much higher-rated players from Vietnam, Singapore and the Philippines. He lost only his third-round match.
The All Visakha Chess Association congratulated Sriram on the rare achievement of winning the gold medal and the FIDE title.
“My next immediate target is to win the IM title and then the Grandmaster title,” Sriram said.
