Sirgapur mandal in Sangareddy district has recorded Telangana’s highest Southwest monsoon rainfall, receiving 919 mm as of August 10. The abundant rains have replenished groundwater, filled water bodies and caused the Nallavagu irrigation project to overflow for four days

Sangareddy: While El Nino pattern had its serious impact across Telangana, the Sirgapur mandal in Sangareddy district had received abundant rains in contrast. With 125 percent excess rainfall, the mandal located in Narayankhed assembly constituency received highest rainfall during the southwest monsoon period in the State.
Sirgapur has recieved 919 mm rainfall against its normal rainfall of 408 mm on August 10 at 8.30 am. No other mandal in Telangana received more than 900 mm rainfall during this season. It has already surpassed the average normal rainfall of this year by 66 mm. Against the average normal rainfall of 854 mm, the mandal received 919 mm even though it had received no rains during the past 24 hours.
Due to heavy rains in this mandal, the medium irrigation project Nallavagu, built across Nallavagu stream, had started overflowing for the last four days. The project will provide irrigation water to 6,500 acres in Sangareddy and Kamareddy districts. Due to copious rains, the groundwater replenished and water bodies were brimming with the water in the mandal.
Sirgapur received more than 500 mm of excess rainfall compared to Sanagreddy district’s actual rainfall this season which was 411 mm. The mandal recorded 35 rainy days in the first 80 days of southwest monsoon as it almost received rains every alternative day. A few mandals in erstwhile Adilabad district came close to Sirgapur as they had recorded about 850 average rainfall until today. The farmers were hoping to get bountiful of harvest this year beating the El Nino threat.
