Birla Blazers survive late comeback to beat Charminar Chargers 34-33

Hyderabad: Birla Blazers scored a thrilling 34-33 win against Charminar Chargers after leading 22-8 at half-time to clinch honours in the sub-junior girls category of the Hyderabad district basketball championship at YMCA Secunderabad here on Wednesday.

It was a low scoring first quarter which saw Birla Blazer’s Tanvi using her height to good effect to score four points, but it was Anika’s free-throw separated them as Charminar Chargers led 6 – 5 at end.


The Blazers dominated the second quarter first with tight defence restricting Chargers to just two points and then in offence playing a fast paced game with Dishi scoring at will scoring 11 points.

With support from Yagna and Mithanya, Blazers scored a massive 17 points to sit comfortably 22 – 8 at half time.

After the lemon break a rejuvenated Chargers, led by Saanvika and two three-pointers scored 12 points in the team score of 16 to bridge the gap to just 2 points as Blazers led 26 – 24 at end of third quarter.

In the keenly-contested fourth quarter, there was little to separate the two teams. With just 40 seconds left for the match scores were level 30 – 30, Dishi of Blazers scored two consecutive baskets through drive in to lead 34 – 30.

With just 10 seconds left the clock Saanvika of Chargers scored a three-pointer to bridge the score to just one point at 33 – 34.

However, Blazers were able to control the ball for the remaining seconds to win the thriller.

The scores: Final: Sub-junior girls: Birla Blazers 34 (Dishi 21, Yagna 6, Tanvi4) bt Charminar Chargers 33 (Saanvika 17, Anika 8).
