Situation in Gaza much worse than Berlin in 1945: Chilean president

Chile’s president says the situation in the besieged Gaza Strip, which has been under Israel’s genocidal war for more than three months, is “much worse” than that of the German city of Berlin in 1945.

Gabriel Boric made the remarks on Monday, referring to the Fall of Berlin that ended World War II.

“Almost all houses have been destroyed and 1.5 million people do not have any place to sleep. They are running out of food,” the Chilean president said.

The Israeli regime has been waging its brutal military aggression against the Palestinian territory since October 7, 2023, when Gaza’s resistance groups staged Operation al-Aqsa Storm against the occupied territories.

The Israeli genocide has so far claimed the lives of more than 24,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, leaving thousands of others wounded.

“Nearly 200 Palestinians lose their lives every day in Gaza. This massacre has to be stopped now,” Boric said.

Millions of Gazans have been also rendered homeless as a result of the Israeli onslaught that, according to the United Nations, has displaced roughly 85 percent of the Palestinian territory’s population.

The Israeli regime has, meanwhile, been enforcing an all-out siege against Gaza that has prevented the flow of food, water, fuel, and medicine into the territory.

The Chilean president’s remarks came after in November last year the country recalled its ambassador from Israel for consultations due to the ongoing genocide in Gaza

Accommodating around half a million Palestinians, Chile hosts the largest Palestinian community outside Arab countries.

The Latin American country recognized Palestine as a “free, independent, and sovereign state” in 2011.
