World Archery upgrades Jyothi Surekha Vennam’s medal to silver

Hyderabad: For one of India’s best-known compound bow archers, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, it was a day to remember on Tuesday as the World Archery upgraded the bronze medal she won at the 2025 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in Nanjing, China, to silver.

Surekha was originally placed third in the final standings of the championship. However, the medal standings were revised after Mexico’s Marina Bernal was disqualified for violating anti-doping regulations.

The doping sample collected from Bernal on September 29, 2025, resulted in her disqualification in accordance with World Archery Federation Rule 3, leading to an official revision of the final results.

“This upgraded silver medal is another significant achievement for Jyothi Surekha Vennam and highlights her continued excellence in international compound archery, bringing pride and recognition to India,” said a visibly delighted and proud father, Surendra Kumar Vennam.

The revised standings: Gold: Andrea Becerra (Mexico); Silver: Jyothi Surekha Vennam (India); Bronze: Ella Gibson (Great Britain).

For the record, the 30-year-old archer from Vijayawada, who has been one of the most consistent medal winners for India across disciplines, has won one gold, five silver and four bronze medals at the World Championships, two silver medals at the World Cup Finals, three gold, one silver and one bronze at the Asian Games, seven gold, five silver and two bronze medals at the Asian Championships, and 11 gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals at the World Cups.
