Iran: Israel’s chain of defeats made it assassinate IRGC commander

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says Israel assassinated a senior military advisor of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in Syria due to its defeat in a host of political, military and security fronts.

Amir-Abdollahian said assassinating Brigadier General Seyyed Razi Mousavi, who was serving as a military advisor in Syria, was out of the regime’s anger and desperation with its own defeats.

Mousavi was martyred in a terrorist Israeli airstrike in a Damascus neighborhood on December 27. He was a comrade of top Iranian anti-terror commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, who was also assassinated in a US drone strike in Iraq in January 2020.

Amir-Abdollahian said the slain IRGC commander has made great efforts to bring regional security in the face of terrorism and the Israeli regime’s crimes in West Asia.

The top Iranian diplomat emphasized that Mousavi’s assassination would never weaken the Islamic Republic’s steadfastness in maintaining security in the region but would strengthen the country’s resolve in this regard.

He said Israel has suffered two defeats in a course of over 80 days.

“The first defeat was on October 7 when Israel collapsed in political and security terms in every sense of the word.”

The minister was referring to the launch of Operation Al-Aqsa Storm by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas against Israel.

And the second defeat, the foreign minister said, has been inflicted on the regime over the past 80 days in military terms after it faced resistance of the Palestinian people in Gaza.

Israel has killed more than 21,600 people, mostly women and children, in Gaza since that October day. Over 56,100 people have also been injured.

The regime, however, has stopped short of realizing any of its stated goals, including obliteration of the Gaza-based Hamas, enabling release of the people who were taken captive during Al-Aqsa Storm, and prompting forced displacement of Gaza’s population to neighboring countries.
