Siddipet: Suspected mounting debts forced a former sarpanch to end his life at Mammadapur in Husnabad mandal on Tuesday. The former sarpanch Pittala Sampath (48) was elected as a village head twice, in the 2014 and 2019 elections.
He also took up several development works by borrowing amounts from friends and other sources. The delay in release of funds by different departments increased his debt burden.
The Rs 11 lakh bill pending with Mission Bhagiratha department reportedly added to his woes. As the lenders insisted on the repayment of loans, Sampath took the extreme step due to his inability to clear them. The former sarpanch, who left home on Monday night, was found hanging from a tree on the outskirts of the village on Tuesday.
He is survived by his wife and two children. Police registered a case and the probe is on.
