Hyderabad: In a daring daylight theft, a driver of a cash van made away with Rs.17 lakh from an SBI ATM cash replenishment vehicle in the old city on Tuesday.
According to police, around 2 pm, two bank employees, a security guard, and the vehicle driver arrived at an SBI ATM to replenish cash. While the security guard and the bank employees entered the ATM kiosk to carry out the cash-loading process, a sum of about Rs.17 lakh remained inside the vehicle.
The driver, identified as Chirra Srinivas, took advantage of the absence of the cash-handling staff from the vehicle, allegedly removed the cash and fled along with his accomplice on a motorcycle. The police suspect that the accomplice of Srinivas was following the cash van.
Following the incident, bank officials lodged a complaint with IS Sadan Police. Based on the complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation.
They are examining the role of the driver and his associate, reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to trace the stolen cash and apprehend the accused. Further investigation is underway.
