Hyderabad: Woman shot dead by husband in Malkajgiri; accused on the run

Hyderabad: In a shocking incident, a woman was allegedly shot dead by her husband, a realtor who had recently secured bail in an illegal firearm possession case, at their house at Maruti Nagar in Malkajgiri on Wednesday.

The suspect, Arun Kumar (45), a real estate businessman, is currently absconding.

Police suspect the murder was pre-planned and are also investigating the role of a second person who allegedly accompanied him at the time of the crime.

According to police, Arun Kumar and his wife Nisha Rani (30) had been having frequent disputes for several months. About a month ago, Nisha, who had been staying with her paternal uncle following frequent disputes with her husband, was reportedly persuaded by Arun to return home.

Police said that around 4.30 am, on Wednesday, an argument allegedly broke out between the couple inside their residence. During the confrontation, Nisha reportedly called out to her mother-in-law, Laxmamma, who lives on the ground floor of the same building.

Laxmamma told police that she heard her daughter-in-law screaming and calling for help. As she rushed upstairs, she heard loud gunshots. By the time she reached the room, Nisha was lying in a pool of blood with a blanket partially covering her body. The local residents who heard the gunshots alerted police.

During the preliminary investigation, police recovered three used cartridge shells from the spot, indicating that multiple rounds had been fired.

Malkajgiri ACP Yadagiri Reddy said the suspect allegedly fired three shots at Nisha before fleeing. Arun had earlier been arrested in March after being caught with an illegal firearm during a vehicle inspection in Amberpet. The weapon was seized, and he was jailed before obtaining bail recently.

Officials are investigating how he managed to procure another firearm within a short period after his release. Police suspect the weapon used in the crime may be a country-made firearm procured through contacts in the Old City, possibly sourced from Bihar.

Police said Arun was previously married to Nisha’s elder sister, which reportedly ended in divorce following persistent disputes.

Laxmamma also revealed that Arun had installed multiple CCTV cameras at the residence but removed them about a month ago. Police are now examining whether the removal of the surveillance system was connected to a planned attempt to eliminate evidence.
