Amid rising anti-American sentiments over Washington’s unconditional support for Israel’s onslaught on the Gaza Strip and in a show of strong solidarity with Palestinians, two US military bases in the eastern Syrian province of Dayr al-Zawr have been targeted by barrages of rockets.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of anti-terror fighters, in a statement published on its Telegram channel late on Tuesday, claimed responsibility for the attack on the base that houses US troops at the Conoco gas field.
It said the base was targeted by several rockets and that the projectiles “directly hit their target.”
There were no immediate reports about possible casualties and the extent of damage caused.
The group noted that the rocket attack was carried out in retaliation for US support of Israel’s bloody war against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which has killed at least 18,412 people and injured more than 50,100 others.
Earlier, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq said it had struck US forces based at the al-Omar oil field. It noted that the base was targeted by a volley of rockets, linking the assault to the US support for Israel’s bloody military campaign in Gaza.
The United States, Israel’s biggest ally, has provided the regime with arms and ammunition since the initiation of the Gaza war.
The US House of Representatives on November 2 passed a standalone $14.3-billion military assistance package for Israel. The legislation, however, is yet to clear the Senate.
Washington has also vetoed United Nations Security Council resolutions that called on the occupying regime to cease its aggression.
Back on December 4, the leader of Iraq’s Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba warned that the United States will pay dearly for an attack that killed five members of the resistance group in the north of Iraq.
Sheikh Akram al-Kaabi said in a statement on December 4 that the US should expect more painful attacks by Iraqi resistance forces on its bases and interests in the Arab country following an airstrike that killed Nujaba fighters in Kirkuk a day earlier.
Kaabi said attacks by Iraqi resistance groups on US forces will continue until they are completely expelled from Iraq.
