A survey by Madhapur Traffic Police has revealed that single riders are a major cause of traffic congestion in Hyderabad’s IT corridor. Conducted near Cyber Towers, the study found over 10,000 solo commuters in just one hour, far outnumbering shared rides.

Hyderabad: A field survey conducted by Madhapur Traffic Police has revealed that single rider commuting is a major contributor to traffic congestion in the city’s busy IT corridor.
The survey, carried out around Cyber Towers during morning peak hours under the directions of Cyberabad Police Commissioner M Ramesh and supervised by Traffic DCP Ranjan Ratan Kumar, highlighted a sharp imbalance between solo and shared commuting. In just one hour, officials recorded 10,138 single riders compared to only 3,584 double riders, an excess of 6,554 solo commuters.
Police said the growing preference for travelling alone is significantly increasing the number of vehicles on the road, leading to frequent traffic snarls. Besides congestion, solo commuting is also resulting in higher fuel consumption, longer travel times, increased accident risks, and physical fatigue for commuters. Traffic authorities also flagged rising carbon emissions as a serious environmental concern.
Despite awareness of these issues, many commuters continue to opt for single vehicle travel, prompting officials to call for a behavioural shift.
Traffic officials, including Additional DCP Hanumantha Rao, ACP Chandrasekhar Reddy and other personnel, participated in the survey and conducted awareness drives among IT employees and citizens.
The Cyberabad Police requested citizens to adopt ride-sharing and carpooling, make greater use of public transport such as buses and metro services and avoid using private vehicles during peak hours unless necessary. They also advised better travel planning to avoid school and office rush hours.
