Hyderabad: Tension prevailed in the Falaknuma after a 28-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by police personnel inside the Falaknuma Police Station on Friday.
Syed Rizwan, a resident of Teegalkunta who runs a chicken centre, was reportedly called to the police station in connection with a recent altercation.
According to family members and friends, Rizwan was allegedly handcuffed and beaten with leather belts and lathis by police staff during the afternoon.
Sources said Rizwan fell unconscious following the alleged assault, after which he was shifted by police to a nearby private hospital, Harmain Hospital, without informing his family.
Upon learning about the incident, Rizwan’s relatives and friends rushed to the police station and later to the hospital, where they staged a protest demanding strict action against the personnel involved. The situation turned tense as a good number of police personnel were also deployed at the hospital premises.
The family alleged that the police attempted to keep the incident under wraps and failed to inform them about Rizwan’s condition.
They have appealed to Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar to initiate action against those responsible for the alleged custodial assault.
Police officials are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
