Farmers protest on Suryapet–Jangaon road demanding water from SRSP

Nalgonda: After hitting the streets demanding supply of urea, farmers are now staging protests over water supply. Worried that their paddy crops might dry up, farmers from Nagaram mandal in Suryapet district staged a protest on the Suryapet–Jangaon main road on Tuesday.

Demanding the government to release water from the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) and protect them from suffering losses, the farmers squatted on the main road and raised slogans despite the scorching heat.

The farmers stated that they cultivate crops mainly depending on water supplied through SRSP canals.

They said the crops had reached an advanced stage before harvesting, but there was no sufficient supply of water. “Due to insufficient water supply since the last few days, our crops were drying up. If this continued for a few more days, losses would be inevitable,” the farmers worried.

As traffic movement on the road was affected due to the protest, police reached the spot and urged the farmers to withdraw the agitation and facilitate smooth traffic flow. However, the farmers did not relent.
