Adilabad: A 55-year-old farmer died, allegedly by suicide, after falling into depression over losses in farming at Pathan village in Bela mandal on Sunday.

Police and family members said that Gaddam Ram Reddy from the village resorted to the drastic step by consuming pesticide in his cowshed after incurring huge losses in cultivation of various crops, including commercial cotton, on his three acres of land and on 20 acres he had leased from locals for three consecutive years.

Reddy cultivated the crops by borrowing around Rs.10 lakh but did not register profits due to unfavourable climatic conditions. He was disheartened over his inability to repay the loans and ended his life. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Venkatamma, wife of Reddy, lodged a complaint with the police. A case was registered and investigation was taken up.
