Hyderabad: The Indian Coast Guard successfully conducted a midnight rescue operation off the coast of Mangaluru, and evacuated an injured fisherman who had fallen overboard from a fishing vessel.
The operation was launched on Sunday, November 1, after the Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 3 (CGDHQ-3) received a distress call over Very High Frequency (VHF) from the Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) Shiv Sagar. The vessel was operating approximately 54 nautical miles (100 kilometers) off the Mangaluru coast, a press release said.
According to officials, the fisherman fell into the water while hauling fishing nets. Although crew members managed to pull him back aboard, he sustained injuries and required urgent medical intervention.
In response to the distress call, CGDHQ-3 deployed the Coast Guard interceptor vessel ICGS C-448. Operating under adverse nighttime conditions, the vessel located the Shiv Sagar, successfully transferred the fisherman, and administered immediate first aid.
The patient was subsequently brought ashore to the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) Jetty and transferred to a local hospital for further medical treatment. Officials noted that the operation highlights the Coast Guard’s ongoing operational readiness and commitment to maritime safety in challenging environments.
