One paycheck is not enough, say young professionals

Hyderabad: The idea of relying on a single paycheck is slowly becoming outdated. For many young Indians, a second source of income is no longer a choice, it’s a necessity shaped by rising expenses, job uncertainty, and evolving lifestyle expectations.

From rent and EMIs to subscriptions and social spending, the cost of living has gone up, especially in urban cities. As a result, more people are turning to side hustles not just to earn extra cash, but to feel financially secure.

Freelancing, content creation, tutoring, and small online businesses are among the most popular ways people are diversifying their income streams.

“I started freelancing as a graphic designer after work just to make some extra money, but now it helps me cover my monthly expenses without stress,” says Karan, a 27-year-old working professional. “It’s not easy to depend on just one salary anymore,” he adds.

Social media has also played a role in normalising hustle culture. Platforms like Instagram and YouTube are filled with creators showcasing their side incomes, making it seem both accessible and aspirational.

However, this comes with its own challenges. Juggling a full-time job with additional work often leads to burnout, leaving little time for rest or personal life. What starts as a side hustle can quickly turn into added pressure.

“I tried managing a small reselling business along with work, but it became overwhelming after a point,” says Neha, a software engineer at Amazon. “It’s good money, but it can get exhausting,” she adds.

The growing dependence on multiple income streams reflects how financial priorities are shifting. Stability today is less about a single steady paycheck and more about creating a safety net through different sources.

For many, side hustles are no longer just an extra, they are gradually becoming a built-in part of how work and income are now being defined.
